  • Steveinthecity: When Thor pulls the hammer back to throw, his momentum stops. He has always been able to float or hover once airborne, and he'll remain until the hammer comes back to him.  I guess the winds keep him aloft.

  • Jabroniville: Yeah, that's odd- Thor usually has the Hammer out in front. Though I don't think it's ever explained how he can throw it while in mid-flight and not just plummet like a goof. I wish artists would stop having him do things like that :)

  • Steveinthecity: @Biolante:  Thor uses the hammer to fly. He can throw his hammer during flight and float in one spot until the hammer returns to him. Don't know what Joe Q. was thinking there. I've never seen Thor fly on his own.

What should I pay folks?
« on: May 05, 2008, 09:31:26 PM »
Here's a book I want on eBay.  Any thoughts on what I should pay?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320245410318&_trksid=p2759.l1259&_trksid=p2759.l1259

My concerns are that the staple looks really bad and the bottom right corner is smashed.  Plus the back cover isn't as nice as it should be according to the grade described.

Finally, I am always a little leery of a seller that won't send a book like this to CGC prior to grading.

Woe is me.....what to do?

If I were you, I'd have to determine just how rare this book is in your collection.  It looks like an old book to me...one that is hard to find.  Normally, what I'd do is buy the book anyway, and then see if I can upgrade it at a later date with another auction, or what have you.

If you really want the book, but are afraid of getting ripped off, I'd start the bidding off slow, and work from there.

This book is very rare in my collection :)
I've never seen one for sale, but I haven't been trying to find any for as long as some of the folks here.  I think I'll see what it goes for by tomorrow and swoop in with a bid.  I know it's over-graded (It's a 3.0 or 5.0 at best).

$750.00??? too rich for my blood. That's almost my mortgage payment.

I can get you a digitial copy for free... :). Go to http://goldenagecomics.co.uk/ tons of golden age books are scanned there, all in the public domain including all of the MLJ books --no Archie specific titles but Blue ribbon1-22, Pep 1-65, Zip, Top-Notch. They also have lots of other goldenage books for free.

$750 for that book is a bargain. It's one of the top 3 Archie books to own IMO. Good luck--hope you win it!

I was thinking about it, but am not certain that it's such a "deal".  There are a couple of concerns I have and think I better stick to CGC-only on books over $500.  If I knew the dealer better I might go up to $1500 on a book of this caliber though.

I agree on the CGC comment. Unless I can examine a book in person or know the seller very well, I tend to shy away from expensive books that aren't certified.

Hope you find another copy in the near future. I'm sure one will come along at some point.

It sure is hard to wait! :)   As you stated earlier - the PEP books from 22-50 are really had to find.

I'm seriously considering the coverless 22.  For me, I am thinking that getting a cover re-creation would be worth the money and then I would at least have an "entry" into the book.  Once I found one with a cover I could re-sell the coverless one.

Are you allowed to move the decimal a few places to the left?

Well - I bid more than I wanted to and I still lost....boo hoo... it went for $1025.

However, the seller immediately contacted me to let me know that the winning bidder had feedback of zero and had told them they were going to Columbia to visit their grandmother, etc....

Hmmmm.. So I think (again) that there is some weirdness to the whole thing, but I'll wait and see about the 2nd chance offer if it materializes.

Of course, now that I'm thinking about this book I am thinking about little else. (except a PEP 22 - which I would love to get).  I honestly think I could go as high as $5000-$8000 on a book like that, but I might as well forget it.  If anything around a 4.0 - 6.0 came onto market I shudder to think about how high it would go!

Crazy!!!

It looks like it was just you and the zero feedback bidder at anything over $875, so that is really what you should pay if the other bidder backs out. I still think the book is a reasonable deal at $1K, though.

You should be able to pick up a Pep 22 for less than $8K if you're OK with either lower grade or restored. Good luck on the quest.

I'm good with lower grade - to about a 3.0 at the very lowest.  The only exception are Canadian Golden-Age which really is "get it when/if you can".  Some of the books I have in my meager collection may very well be the only known copy!

I actually prefer to collect in the 4.0-6.0 range for my pre-1955, $500+ books.  I find that 9.0 books from the 1940's are really pretty expensive - if I need a book that pretty I'm happy with restored.

After 1955 I like Fine-VF+.

This is what makes Archie's one of the hardest books to collect!  They are very rarely in good condition because they actually were read and re-read and re-re-read.

One day PEP 22 will find itself into my collection...one wonderful day!
