  • Steveinthecity: When Thor pulls the hammer back to throw, his momentum stops. He has always been able to float or hover once airborne, and he'll remain until the hammer comes back to him.  I guess the winds keep him aloft.

  • Jabroniville: Yeah, that's odd- Thor usually has the Hammer out in front. Though I don't think it's ever explained how he can throw it while in mid-flight and not just plummet like a goof. I wish artists would stop having him do things like that :)

  • Steveinthecity: @Biolante:  Thor uses the hammer to fly. He can throw his hammer during flight and float in one spot until the hammer returns to him. Don't know what Joe Q. was thinking there. I've never seen Thor fly on his own.

Brooklyn,
What a cool story! You actually knew the man. In my opinion, the little personal side comment by Dan, is the sort of thing you will never forget. I'm sure Dan was more than a bit unhappy with the Archie Comics Group at the time, so he was perhaps somewhat inclined to suggest something  off color regarding these normally squeaky clean characters. I can't blame the guy. I for one, would love to read the entire interview with Dan.

I did the interview as a cover story for a pull out section created bi-monthly for the Archie Fanzine that Mary Smith started, at the time that the very nice guy Jeffrey C. Branch took over as editor and all around go to guy on it. A dude I haven't talked to in years but just dropped a note to, after discovering this forum. Anyway, I was even able to get Dan to draw the cover of the issue for me - from a design I created --- so cool.

Since you all seem to be true fans, and I haven't talked about that part of my youth in a long time, I can share a bit with you. Dan was very generous - - with his time and his talent. I remember him telling me stories about working with Stan Lee on a comic strip that he drew, and Stan wrote - - I have a few originals that he gave me. He was always impressed with the way that Lee climb in the industry. It pained me to see Dan get fired from AC so late in the game. I guess it was tough to explain keeping him as a staff member, when he had a lawsuit out against them. What's really sad is that Dan has not only passed away, but his two sons (who were inkers for a time with Archie Comics and great artists in their own right) died before he did.

I think I still have the original tapes from my interview with Dan, and haven't read the interview in YEARS. If anyone here has an old copy of the fanzine, you are more than welcome to post my piece here. If not, and there is strong interest, I can go back to my folks house and try to find it. Let me know - - have fun.

I hunted down Mary's Smith's 3 books with a passion. I was hoping to find her and tell her how much I appreciated her dedication to the Archieverse. In the 1990s, before the internet and message boards, here she was publishing a fanzine and regular books about a franchise most hard-core comic readers -- including myself-- considered dead. I really wanted to invite her to the board, to let her know she really wasn't alone. But I found out out -- after multiple fruitless searches and googles -- that she had passed away a year before I started collecting Archies.

I'm still looking for any issues of that old fanzine if anyone has some they want to part with...

Glad to have you here, Brooklyn. Thanks for the post.

Gregg

Wonderful post, Brooklyn. I hope someone can find the rest of the article. As for the pictures Dan drew - ... maybe if you were to post them, but, include a watermark? Not to upset anyone, but, I think a watermark on Mr. DeCarlo's originals (scanned, of course) would be a good idea.

Wow! Dan actually GAVE you some original art? How cool is that?  You know, those pieces are really worth something today. Hang on to them and keep them in good condition.

I actually have a lot of original comic strips that Dan did for the newspaper strip, and autographed (in front of me). I really have no interest in selling any of it though.

That's good that you appreciate their personal value. Maybe someday you will decide to donate them to a public collection so that everyone can see and appreciate the great work of Mr. DeCarlo.

I haven't heard about Mary Smith in years, didn't know she passed away either. I became friends with her and Jeffrey Branch, we even visited the Archie offices together. She was also a good friend of Dan DeCarlo's. Too bad the old fanzine can't be converted to the net for historical purposes.

Wow!  This is great - some fanzines to track down as well as the possibility of seeing some rare artwork.  I'm loving this forum!
No matter where I go, there I am.  Creepy.
