It Started at a Laundromat
« on: January 07, 2010, 10:47:10 PM »
I figured I may as well relate how I got started in Archie, for posterity...or something  :D

Back in our old duplex, we didn't have a washer or dryer in the house, so we went to a nearby laundromat once or twice a week for clean clothes. I was about seven or eight years old, so I normally ended up going with my mom and getting bored out of my mind waiting for the loads to finish. So one time my mom and I stopped at the grocery store beforehand to get some snacks, and she showed me an Archie Double Digest. She said that she loved them when she was a kid, so she would buy one for me to read at the laundromat if I wanted. Eager to get my hands on anything to pass the time, I accepted.

I loved it. I probably read that digest three times while I waited for the laundry to finish, and then reread it for a few days until I could convince my dad to get me another one. Archie comics became a regular item to pick up on trips to the super market. Mostly I got Betty and Veronica comics or Archie and Pals Double Digests. I got my god cousin into them, too, so we would read them together and talk about the stories and characters.

Time went on, and I gradually grew away from Archie comics (along with my cousin). For 5 or 6 years I mostly forgot about them, occasionally seeing something online to remind me but for the most part not thinking about them. Then, near the end of this summer, my family learned that we were going to have to move and slowly started the packing process. I put off my room for a while since it was a disaster zone, but I finally got around to it in late October, and I happened to find what little was left of my Archie comic collection in my closet. Looking for any excuse to put off packing, I started to re-read them and remembered how much I loved them! All the characters and my favorite stories came back to me, and it was like meeting old friends again after a long time apart.

Shortly after that, I started looking around the internet for Archie stuff, finding the official site and this forum, aaaand that's how I joined  ;) So there is my Archie story!

That's a great memory!  Archie comics at the laundromat is a great way to get into the books.  :)

What luck that you hung onto your old comics and they didn't get thrown out or sold at a yard sale or something.  I used to read Archie all the time as a child but lord knows where all those comics went!

That's a great story, and I only wish that, when I was younger and my grandmother used to drag me & my sister to the laundromat, I had Archie's to escape to! I'm sure it was a great way to introduce you to (and keep you interested in) reading at a young age too!
