Archie Comics And Me
«

I've been a fan of comic books for a long, long time! When I was very young, I bought titles like Super Goof, and Walt Disney's Comics And Stories, and TV and movie and animated cartoon-related titles. I think around age ten, I "graduated" to the Archie family of comic books, particularly to Jughead. (I consider Mr. Jones a friend of mine to this day!) As I entered my pre-teen years, Archie and the gang were becoming superheroes and I loved Captain Hero, Super Teen, Pureheart The Powerful, etc. In Junior High, I got into DC and Marvel superhero comics, but also would purchase Archie books. While I still got a kick out of Jughead, I found I was buying the books for other reasons now - namely Betty, Veronica, Midge, and Melody.
The female characters of the Archie universe helped jump start my puberty! Throughout High School, my younger sister and my younger female cousins would buy the "girl" Archie titles - Josie, Betty And Veronica, Betty And Me. I couldn't bring myself to do that, but I did let them read my comics if I could read theirs. And read them I did! And I loved looking at the pictures!
In college, my friends and I collected superhero titles, but we would still buy Archie titles now and then, particularly if Betty and Veronica were drawn REAL well and/or were involved in romantic situations. Throughout the years, I would collect comic books, then stop because of finances and other reasons and get rid of my collections, then start again later. Now, I have an extensive DC and Marvel superhero collection and the last couple of years have started to slowly build up an Archie collection as well. And I still pick up new Archie comics now and then that interest me.

Good to have you here Bluto!
What are your preferences in Archie stories? Are you still primarily a fan of the romantic stories? Do you pick up digests or the regular size monthlies?

Well, any fan of Jughead is definitely cool in my books. As you can tell from my screenname, I too am a huge fan.
Nice to see some new faces here!

Jim,
I'm primarily interested in the romantic stories and in obtaining some of the books that I loved so long ago. I don't regularly subscribe to any monthlies or digests, but will look them over at Waldenbooks, Barnes & Noble, Walmart, comic book shops, and the two drugstores and the one supermarket in the region which, believe it or not, still carry comic books! If the artwork and/or stories in them appeal to me, I'll pick them up.
Captain Hero,
Jughead is IMHO one of the most perfect comic book characters ever created! Someday when I have some time, I'll try to write a post in the "Archie's Friends" section that explains why I feel this way.
Thanks for the warm welcome, Guys!

I am indeed a major Popeye fan and write a column for The Official Popeye Fanclub News-Magazine.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was an "official" fanclub for anything and everything under the sun.

Jim,
It's called "official" because it is sanctioned by King Features Syndicate, the owner of the rights to Popeye.
Oldiesmann And Everyone,

Indeed it does. But the club is run by layperson volunteers who donate their own time without any pay just because they love the Popeye characters. So the website probably won't ever be real slick. Like Popeye himself, "It is what it is and that's all that it is." If anyone is interested in Popeye, I highly recommend joining the club. You'll find out things you never knew before and meet fans from all over.

I used to LOVE the black and white popeye cartoons. Are you reading the collections from Fantagraphics? I haven't gotten them but they look very interesting. It's such a big format though.
And yes, that website looks very much like a fansite.

I got the first Fantagraphic volume and it is great! E.C. Segar's Popeye will always be the best Popeye to me. The book is rather oversized, though, as you noted. It's like a big "coffee table" book. I will pick up the other volumes as they are released. I think they plan on one a year. Incidently, the black and white cartoons have been restored and will be relaesed this year in two volumes from Warner Brothers Home Video.
