Title: If they do an Archie movie, do you think they'll use the Riverdale cast?
Post by: carrotz on February 23, 2017, 11:36:08 PM
They are hoping to do movies. If that happened, do you think they will use these actors? I don't think so. The Flash movie is using different actors from the show. Movies only use the tv cast when the show is either a very big hit, or an original creation that was not part of an old property like Archie. What kind of actors would you want them to use? More traditional, or more diverse?

Voice actors. If there's an Archie movie, it should be an animated movie. Traditional cel animation, not CGI.

You mean like Disney, or like anime?

Whether they used animation or not, I would want them to do a period piece that was set either in the 40s, 50s, 60s or early to mid 70s, the years when Archie was popular and each decade had its own distinct culture. Everyone would be dressed in period fashions and there would be a strong girls vs. boys theme. If I could wish for anything.

It should look like neither -- it should look like Archie Comics' traditional style, a Montana/Lucey/DeCarlo/Parent fusion, as different from the current comics and live action Riverdale TV show as possible, but be contemporary in terms of current technology, fashion, and cultural references. I hate that film animation tends to be viewed as having to be confined to the 2 most well-recognized styles. The technology to make it happen is the same. The only thing preventing something like that from happening would be people who say "we can't"... or "we don't want to".

Do I think anything like that has a real chance of happening? No, it's pretty unlikely... but we're just playing the wishing game here, so why not shoot for the ideal.

I would love to see a Dan DeCarlo style animated Archie movie or even TV show. It should be set in the early 60s.

I have mixed feelings about that idea. While I'm sure you and I and a few hundred other people would love it, it's almost like you're writing off the idea of a traditional-styled Archie comics animated film as something that's confined to a nostalgic (yet non-existent) past, that would have no appeal and nothing to say to the kids of today -- i.e. guaranteed to appeal only to dyed-in-the-wool Archie Comics collectors.

It gives me pause to think about it, because DC/Warner just recently made an animated film based on the 1966 Batman TV show, yet in deference to appealing to a wider audience, they specifically avoided any sort of references that would ground the film as taking place in a specific time period. In some ways that was a disappointment to me personally, yet at the same time I could see the wisdom of that decision on the part of the producers. Apart from that it's an imperfect film in a lot of ways, yet I applaud the attempt to make that version of Batman try to appeal to a wider audience.

It's better to get a cautious 60s setting than none, I guess. I wonder how reliable DC/Warner's research is, if they've decided kids will only like current settings. Kids love Disney fairy tales set in ancient times, and they loved some shows set in the 1800s; I think they would love a Kennedy era Archie if it was funny, colorful and embraced its differences, with some fantasy elements like Dilton's inventions or Sabrina's witchcraft.

Fairy tales are "a long time ago (in a galaxy far far away)", so they're not really historical, they're mythical. Kids have no real sense of history -- maybe a vague sense of something being pre-20th century, but that's about all. Maybe a few of the smarter kids care about anything to do with history, but in the main, no.

That's true of even adults writing comic books today; I can't tell you the number of times I've come across anachronistic expressions used in character dialogue in stories supposedly set in the past.

I see that a lot. It is hard to keep track of every anachronism when writing dialogue, but with Wikipedia double checking should be easy.

I think the fact that kids don't have a strong sense of history would be good for a retro show. Even a fairy tale like The Princess and the Frog that was set more recently in the 1920s was loved by kids. For a comedy romance like Princess or Archie, a past setting adds color. Maybe for Batman or other superhero stories, it's not as good because it makes the crime fighting seem too low tech for some fans.

If they ever have an Archie movie. I would want it to be a Lego Movie. The Riverdale cast can voice cast if available I suppose.  I really don't care who they cast if  that Archie movie was a Lego movie. Lego movie  are  really great  at what I need in an Archie anything really and that is heartwarming moment along with humour

no I don't think so but if they did I would be all for it. Also there nothing stopping them from creating one for the movie. Any this is just me dreaming.

^I remember seeing the first one and I thought it was overrated. Not as funny as people were saying it was. It had its moments though.

I personally love them. But I understand it's not for everyone. They can get more a bit random at time at total chesse fests I am not going to lie. But for me and many others it a big part of the appeal of them.

If they did it
I would want to see an animation or it set in the 50s if it was realistic with people. Is also suggest it be a musical or something colourful and fun like hairspray!
