• Vegan Jughead: Ms. Grundy would have been a total surprise but it turned out she wasn't really Ms. Grundy so I can let that go.  Killing Moose after barely seeing him last year and Midge after she was in literally one episode (and barely in it, at that) seems ridiculous.

 • DeCarlo Rules: For a character franchise that's been running for 75+ years, ARCHIE really has a pretty small cast of regulars. Apart from the core 5 and the other 6 already mentioned, there's Cheryl & Jason and Kevin... and (filed under "extended supporting players") the teachers and parents. That's pretty much it. 14 teen characters and their parents & teachers. Sabrina and Josie and their supporting casts coexist in Riverdale, but they're really their own separate franchises. If your murder victims turn out to be Jinx Malloy and Cricket O'Dell, there's not much drama in it, beyond a shrug.

 • DeCarlo Rules: Why Moose and Midge? Good question... let me know if you can think of any other ongoing characters who are more expendable, but still well-known. I guess the other likely candidates would be Dilton and Ethel, or Chuck and Nancy. I guess you could come up with a short list of other names, but are they really that well-known? Ms. Grundy was a total surprise!

 • Tuxedo Mark: I recently watched Geek House's reaction to the episode. They're very amateur. They often leave in false starts and farting around before the actual intro. Joey often struggles with the episode title, like he can't just look it up before they start recording. Joey has to announce that he's putting the video into full screen and then does a countdown. Cut all of that stuff out! In the new review, he and his wife didn't react at all to Moose and Midge being killed. It soon became apparent that they didn't even know it was Moose and Midge! Joey referred to them as the "drug addicts".

List discussion?
« on: April 28, 2016, 05:29:33 AM »
In the pre-crash forum I had several Lists of various Archie series — the Betty & Veronica titles, Sabrina, Josie (& the Pussycats), Cheryl Blossom, Archie 1, Archie the Barbarian, Archie 3000, Man from R.I.V.E.R.D.A.L.E., Superteens, etc… some were by request and some I was looking for help completing … so I’m sort of going back to that, but hopefully more organized, and to keep it that way I’d like to use this thread as discussion, and one in Story Help just as a reference; (I’ll update there with any changes based on this thread) … not sure how well this will work but the idea is to have a nice reference for specific characters and “alternate reality” series that are scattered or hard to find.

The actual List thread is: Archie lists and Alterverses

I think I reminded you of this last time, but you must have forgotten to update the list at that time. Sort of a fuzzy area here, melding two Archie Alterniverses together...

LITTLE ARCHIE (as Little Capt. Pureheart)
#40 - The Venomous Vixen (13)
#41 - The Mad Music Master (?)
#42 - The Attack of the Mole Men (10) [reprint in Best of Archie Comics Book 2, Archie Double Digest #260]

Some additional notes on reprinted (and one original, otherwise unreprinted) Archie superhero stories. Dates listed here are those of the original publication of the story listed.

ARCHIE GIANT SERIES (AROUND THE WORLD WITH ARCHIE) #141   September-66   (cover only?) --- new story unlikely; reprint(s) possible

Captain Hero in "Hero To Go!!" (5 pages) was originally published in ARCHIE GIANT SERIES (ARCHIE'S SUPER HERO SPECIAL) #142 (reprinted in ARCHIE'S SUPERTEENS #1)
Captain Hero in "The Sorcerer" (11 pages) was originally published in ARCHIE GIANT SERIES (WORLD OF JUGHEAD) #143 (unreprinted)

Evilheart in "The Tarantula's Trap" (11 pages) was originally published in REGGIE AND ME #23 (reprinted in ARCHIE'S SUPER HERO SPECIAL COMICS DIGEST #2). I am still unable to locate the original publication of Evilheart in "Chaos in a Common Cane", so that may indeed have been an unpublished story until it appeared in ARCHIE & FRIENDS DOUBLE DIGEST #16, unless it first appeared in AGS #141 (that issue remains un-indexed).

Pureheart makes a cameo appearance in both stories in LIFE WITH ARCHIE magazine #18 (May 2012):
Archie Marries Veronica: "Progress's Price Part Six: A Trip Down Memory Lane"
Archie Marries Betty: "Sacrifice and Salvation Part 6: Fancy Meeting You Here!"
(Both stories are reprinted in ARCHIE: THE MARRIED LIFE - BOOK 3 TPB.)

Super-Teen (or a version of Super-Teen, unnamed, with the slight costume alteration of the letters BC replacing ST in the heart of her uniform symbol) appears  in the Betty story "The Wish" (6 pages) by George Gladir and Jeff Shultz, in BETTY AND VERONICA #270 (Apr. 2014).

The prototype for Captain Hero ("Superdroop") appears in "Strangest Adventure" (18 pages) by George Gladir and Dan DeCarlo, in ARCHIE GIANT SERIES (THE WORLD OF JUGHEAD) #19, Dec. 1962 (and is reprinted in ARCHIE DOUBLE DIGEST #45, Mar. 1990).

The story that you're probably thinking of ("Son of Hercules") appears in JUGHEAD'S FANTASY #3 (Dec. 1960), not #1. It's otherwise unrelated as a superhero story. In it, Jughead concocts a potion that gives him super strength, but doesn't put on a costume or pursue a career as a supehero. Instead, he joins the football team. It's more in line with one of the more 'out-there' Jughead stories with a sci-fi premise.

Captain Hero in "Hero To Go!!" (5 pages) was originally published in ARCHIE GIANT SERIES (ARCHIE'S SUPER HERO SPECIAL) #142 (reprinted in ARCHIE'S SUPERTEENS #1)

Oops. Not quite. Just did some rechecking, and Captain Hero in "Hero to Go!!!" first appeared in JUGHEAD #126 (Nov. 1965), the very month after Pureheart first appeared in LIFE WITH ARCHIE #42. Is it the first official Captain Hero story in which Jughead is so named? That's what I'm trying to determine, but I have a vague recollection that there may have been another (where Jughead was a superhero named Captain Hero) that preceded it (and Pureheart) by months. I'll have to keep checking...

I have great respect for "Robby Reed" over at Dial B For Blog. In this one instance though, he missed the first appearance of the Captain Hero story "Hero To Go!!!" in JUGHEAD #126, of which the version in ARCHIE GIANT SERIES #142 appears to be a slightly altered reprint (he also failed to mention the earlier prototype Superdroop from "Strangest Adventure" in ARCHIE GIANT SERIES #19 that preceded Captain Hero, but as that super incarnation of Jughead wasn't actually named Captain Hero, maybe it's not that relevant). I originally missed it too, but somehow vaguely recollected reading the version of that story where he wore a slightly different costume, and it being credited as having been reprinted from a comic earlier than ARCHIE GIANT #142. At first I didn't even realize that they were the same story.

"Hero to Go!!!" (the original version from JUGHEAD #126) is reprinted in THE BEST OF ARCHIE COMICS: 75 YEARS 75 STORIES.

I've been trying to track down the source of the reprints in my Archie digests and came across this page. FWIW, "Chaos in A Common Cane" did not appear for the first time in Archie and Friends Double Digest #16. That 13 pager also appears in Laugh Comics Digest #14, from 1978.
