Title: NEW BETTY & VERONICA SERIES COMING OUT IN JULY!!!!!!!
Post by: Asdfghjkl on April 12, 2016, 11:24:32 AM
I just saw the news on Twitter and Archie Comics themselves said that the new B&V series will come out in July!   And the variant comics look awesome!

The variants are nice but how come there only 4 to choose from? I really thought there will be at least 22 like Archie's reboot. I love Veronica Fish's the most.

Is there a link to see the new variant covers for this Betty and Veronica reboot?

I really like the Stephanie Buscema variant cover.

I also like Chip Zdarsky & Stephanie B's covers. Cliff's is alright but it's better than Francvilla's cover.

The only other variant that I kind of like is Cliff's. The others I do not like. I also really like what is going to be the regular cover.

There's 6 listed there, and they don't say that that's all, others may be kept for timed release to keep up interest, or not turned in yet... Too early to say.

I don't think they will have 22 like the Archie reboot. I am thinking more like the Jughead reboot for variant #1 covers.

True, and they may not feel they can afford to pay that many artists this time around.

My absolute favorite variant cover was Cliff's.  To me it captures B&V's different styles and personalities perfectly.

"Pops' Chocklit Shoppe is being taken over by a huge coffee company," it reads. "When Betty and Veronica go head-to-head over the issue, all bets are off! Friendships will shatter. Cities will burn. Nails will be broken."

Sounds right up my alley. This is much better than the Jughead and Archie storylines. Hopefully the plot moves along more swiftly too.

If ACP were smart they would have preorder links up ready to go for this and Kevin but who knows? They might cancel that or some of these covers.

I like all the variant covers except Chip's. It looks very 80s to me. I especially like Francesco's and Cliff's covers. Cliff could even draw the Betty and Veronica comic when Adam drops out. Veronica Fish's cover is also very creative and detailed.

You can only pull off something like 22 cover variants once in a great while, and get retailers to go for it. (That's not even counting the additional dozen or so Retailer Exclusive variants).  Most of those dealers couldn't afford to speculate like that on even one title every month, because there's 200 other books every month with variant covers out there to think about, too.

I don't think I've been to a comic book store that had all 22 variants except maybe the midtown website. Most just had the same 5 variants of Archie #1.

What I mostly do not like about Chip's cover is Betty's face and especially smile. It is just not right. Veronica Fish cover on the motorcycle has a lot of color which is cool, but Betty's face is awkward and kind of resembles a vampire to me. The Francesco cover is way to plain and Betty and Veronica look like they are about to kill each other with those scowls on their faces.

It just looks like I've seen it too many times before. Leaning against a brick wall has been used on many album covers and movie posters. Also he doesn't draw the girls the prettiest.

So you must be the real Gisele. The Archie Meets The Ramones cover is one of my favorites. Actually I just really like the way you draw the Archie characters in general.

Yeah, that's pretty much it. I'm considered "classic style" over at Archie (even if I can draw in other styles,) and they have this rule in place it seems that artists that are considered "classic style" are not asked. I guess they have their reasons. So yeah, don't blame me! I'm sure they'll print a bunch of blank sketch covers which for the most part will be used by classic style Archie artists to draw on. Funny when you think about it.

First and foremost you should be considered as an artist. Not just one style of artist. I imagine as you went through your art training you learned many styles of art. I don't understand what goes on in the minds of the executives most of the time at ACP.

One of the worst things Archie Comics ever did was put us in the position of having to categorize ourselves as "Classic Archie" artists. We ALL used to be just Archie artists and everyone knew what that meant. Now we're Classic Archie artists or Reboot Archie artists. It's horrible, horrible branding!

When I draw for Archie, I force myself to be a bit more on model ('cause that's what's expected of me,) but I try to make it my own (so people know it's me.) With that said, yeah, I CAN draw Archie not on model. It's actually easier! :)

Archie USED to value artists who can draw their characters on model. Not anymore!

Being as I'm probably the last "classic style" Archie artist to somewhat enter the fold, I have to say that I felt they were a bit too strict with that at times. I know I never got much work there because I rebelled a bit and didn't follow it to a T (and yes, I know that there wasn't much work to go around to begin with.) I think character model sheets help, but so long as you know who's who (and it's cute,) I think it's OK. Archie Comics were never really able to find artists that drew exactly alike anyway. Even when we try to follow it, we'll never be DeCarlo (so give it a rest, right?) If they ever revert back to the classic style, I hope they'll cut us a bit of slack (if we're asked back) considering the current output.

I find it really crazy that they were extremely strict back then with what they called the character model. Each artist has there own style which in my opinion is what makes art great. Like you said no one is going to be Dan DeCarlo.

I also find it crazy as I feel they must have slacked off quite a bit in the new rebooted series with trying to have a similar look between the artists that have done these books. With each artist change there seems to be a drastic change in the art style some good and some bad in my opinion. So it is either because they haven't developed that character model yet for the reboot or they just don't care anymore.

I think the people that followed Fiona tried to copy her a bit but all & all, I think character models are out the window for this reboot. It's also probably why the "classic style artists" aren't asked to touch this in any way as what we'll produce might slightly look like the classic style. It has to be "All New, All Different... Archie!"

It seems like they don't care what it looks like, or for narrative consistency, or anything as long as it's different — like throwing things at the wall to see what sticks ...

In my opinion if the other Artists that have followed Fiona attempted to follow her style they failed miserably. Every time they change an artist it seems like a drastic change in style and consistency which is really turning me off to the entire project which I really wasn't that hyped for to begin with.

I actually thought Fiona Staples was the weakest art of the Archie reboot so far.  My favorite is Veronica Fish and I'm glad they made her the permanent artist.

Veronica Fish is also good, but she definitely went out on her own and there wasn't much consistency when she became the artist from the previous artist. I hope they stick with her through the duration to at least get that consistency in the art.

If the fans supported them so well for so many years, why would a reboot be necessary?  They didn't cancel the old series because they were selling too well.  I prefer the classic style as well, by far.  But I'm not going to pretend it was selling a ton for Archie because it wasn't.

Well in Archie #3 Betty helped Veronica in the ladies room because her blouse was dirty but Veronica kinda dissed her by not taking her help.

I for one am really looking forward to this. I lived in South Africa until July of 2015 and Archie Comics were not widely available especially in the area where I was from. I never read a "Classic" Archie comic in my life. Of course while in South Africa I heard of Archie comics, but like I said they were just not available. The one webcomic I did read while in South Africa was Cottonstar. So when I came to America last July I saw the Archie #1 at a local comic shop and picked it up. I enjoyed it a lot and kept reading it. Then I noticed the Jughead character had his own comic coming out and got that and liked it and kept reading it. Now I am really looking forward to this Betty and Veronica comic. Maybe I am missing out not ever reading a "Classic" Archie comic or maybe not ever getting into it other than seeing images on the internet might be a good thing because it is not turning me off to this new style. Who knows.

All comic fans are comic book readers, but not all comic book readers are fans. When the majority of floppy comic sales shifted from general retail outlets to comic book shops, the fans began to dominate readership of comics in the floppy format. That format of comics just isn't available in enough places other than comic shops. While Marvel and DC Comics can still do a reasonable amount of business by relying on their hardcore fans, Archie Comics cannot. There aren't enough hardcore fans of Archie to really depend on to publish a comic book. The backbone of Archie Comics' readership has always been composed of younger and casual readers, and only the digest format is reaching those readers. Right now with the reboot floppies, Archie Comics is trying to create a fanbase of comic shop customers who have never really existed before. There are certain Pavlovian-response sales techniques that are proven to work with this audience in the short term (the prime and most important one is to win the confidence of the retailers in ordering the first issues of new titles), but creating an audience where none exists is a tough trick to pull off, because if the sales don't follow on subsequent issues, retailers aren't going to continue to speculate. It's a tough market with too many publishers and too many titles.

Honestly, between the reboot and the classic Archie artists being let go, this has been the perfect stopping point for me.  After having read Archie Vol. 1 and noticing that I still haven't gotten around to finishing the last few digests I've picked up, I think I need a break from Archie.  The new direction of the company really has turned me off of the books.

Just curious, GingerGal. How is it that when you moved here last July, one of the first places you visited after getting here was a comic shop? I could understand if you had been a comic fan before leaving South Africa, then of course you'd want to check out a local one as soon after you'd moved as possible. Does there just happen to be one within walking distance of where you're living now? Or did reading webcomics make you want to check out what was available in print? Or do your parents read comics and they just took you along with them to the comic shop?

The stupid thing is...a couple days after writing that, what do I find myself reading before bed?  Archie's 1000  Page Comics Shindig!  I confuse myself sometimes...

Well, you'll always have the Archie Comics that you have, and you can reread them over. The 1000 Page digests are pretty much the same as pulling out all your digests from 3-4 months ago and rereading them. It's like they just glued them all together and cut out the ads and non-Archie stories (like Sabrina and Josie).

I guess at this time it looks like the 1000 Page digests and Giant Comics digests are the only classic Archie trade paperbacks that are selling, so those are the only ones they'll continue to put out.

I'm kinda partial to the David Mack cover. He's not an artist whose work I've really followed up to now. Just a nice simple silhouette design, that really seems to work.

They've got to be careful of "variant cover backlash". You can overwork that gimmick really easily. Five is plenty. More than plenty, really. You keep flooding the market with multiple multiple variants on every issue of every title, and retailers get burned out quickly on the idea and turned off and won't order them. A lot of fans will get turned off, too, because it makes it increasingly harder to get a specific one, if they only want one.

"ONLY" five variants... wow.

I agree to a point, DeCarlo, but I think in B&V's case, at least with the early issues, Archie should strike while the iron is hot.  There are a lot of men who will buy these just because they're hot for B&V.  Sad but true.  A company like Archie Comics needs to exploit every opportunity to make money.

I'm not saying that's my preference for how they do business.  Just being realistic.

I have to disagree, I have 12 comic frames. I wouldn't buy 12 but if there's a lot to choose I can pick the ones I like most. For #2 I only like 3 of them . The other 2 is not to my liking.

Except that you have to look at it from a retailer's perspective, and a lot of these guys are really (really) small businessmen who don't have the deep pockets to underwrite the sales pushes of every publisher out there. These guys are making the majority of their sales from Marvel, DC, Image, and a few other companies, and Archie Comics Publications is WAY WAY down the list. There are a dozen or more publishers ahead of them in terms of the importance of getting their variant covers, because more people want those. So they HAVE to pick and choose, and play favorites. Overwhelm them with TOO many covers to choose from if you're a relatively small publisher like ACP and they may just say "The heck with it, it's too much! I've got to save my money for investing in MARVEL variants" (or whatever). Unlike here, the comic shop world doesn't revolve around the nexus of ACP.

Archie Comics can attempt to solicit any products they want, but if BETTY AND VERONICA #1 is shipping in June, and DC REBIRTH with a dozen new #1 issues with variants are ALSO shipping the same month, then if you are a retailer who is NOT Midtown Comics, Mile High Comics, or Lone Star Comics, but just a rinky-dink local guy with a single store, trying to survive in a small town or suburb (which by the way, is MOST comic shops, numerically speaking), which variants do you think the smart money is on?

You're absolutely right.  My friend just closed his comic shop because it's a tough business.  I'm looking at it from Archie Comics' persepective, but your point is spot on.

A lot of them look great but J. Scott  Campbell's issue is $18 bucks. That's a lot for a comic. I saw a price of another one it was $17 . The 2 issues that M & M Comics were $7.50 each. Andrew Pepoy covers is $8.99, that's a lot . But I preorder a few blank variants I rather spend on money that them. Like I said Gabbie Gross & Gisele is going each do one for me.

That's the point of a lot of variants though - to get people to pay more for covers they like (possibly multiple times) ...

Betty and Veronica are my favorite stories and characters and what Adam Hughes has done in the past with his art on them has been amazing. I may have to take a peek at this new series, I just hate ordering them online as I don't have a Comic Shop in my area and the regular bookstore only carries sporadic digests.

Some of those exclusive variants look great. Especially the Flying Colors Comics (Dez Taylor), Rick's Comic City (Sam Payne), and Stadium Comics (Marco D'Alfonso) covers. I'd love to see any of those guys draw an entire issue.

My local Barnes and Noble used to carry the Betty and Veronica floppies and now carries the Archie reboot. You may see it there.

My local bookstore is a Barnes and Noble and they don't have the reboot floppies.
