  • DeCarlo Rules: That's pretty much the whole point of having an internet -- it connects you to entertainment, information, and people who would otherwise be too far away from you physically, or would involve much greater effort on your part to connect with. And although there are some advantages for comic book collectors inherent in the direct-market dedicated comic book shop system, the major BIG (obvious) DISadvantage is that only a few thousand of those shops exist, compared to the huge number of retailers who used to carry comic books along with their other products back in the days of the "newsstand distribution system".

  • DeCarlo Rules: @Archiecomicxfan215 - FCBD comic books may be free to you, but the retailer has to PAY for those comic books he gives away for free. The publishers of the FCBD comics make no profit off them, and they're distributed to retailers by Diamond Comics for free, but they have to charge comic shop owners money for them, because paper and printing costs money. Your local comic shop owner loses a small amount of money with every FCBD comic book he gives away. Of course the whole idea behind FCBD is that sampling those free comic books will create interest in customers actually BUYing the retail versions of those FCBD comic books later on.

Quick Jughead Digest Questions....
« on: May 11, 2017, 02:10:48 PM »
...Are "Jughead" and "Jughead Jones" digests of the same title, or different ones? If so, did ACP add the last name to distinguish them from each other, and what were the differences? Just wondering, thanks....

Two different titles.  Jughead Jones ran from '77 to '96-ish, the Jughead Digest ran from '89 until 2012.  The Jughead digest had more pages, but I don't recall anything differing as far as content goes.

Ah, thank you.  :) In other words, ACP was squeezing extra moolah for the same character, just with a slightly different title. Slick....

There have been no less than SIX different digest titles devoted to Jughead over the years, so his history of digest reprint titles can probably be the most confusing to sort out. Okay, really only FIVE if you don't count that one-shot CAPTAIN HERO Maybe the most easily confused digest titles are JUGHEAD WITH ARCHIE DIGEST (1974-2005) and the very-similarly-titled JUGHEAD AND ARCHIE DOUBLE DIGEST (2014-now). For simplicity's sake I've omitted the words "comics" and "magazine" where they've appeared over the years in some digest titles, where they've been sometimes inconsistently applied. I've listed all the ACP digest titles here with the ones devoted to Jughead in bold:

title      1st issue         Last issue         #      notes
ARCHIE DIGEST      Aug   1973      Sep   2010      267      Replaced by WORLD OF ARCHIE DOUBLE DIGEST
LAUGH COMICS DIGEST      Aug   1974      Apr   2005      200      Replaced by TALES FROM RIVERDALE DIGEST
JUGHEAD WITH ARCHIE DIGEST      Aug   1974      May   2005      200      Replaced by JUGHEAD AND FRIENDS DIGEST
ARCHIE ANNUAL DIGEST         1975      Apr   1998      43      Continued from ARCHIE ANNUAL #26  (#s27-69)
   MADHOUSE COMICS DIGEST         1976      Aug   1982      8
ARCHIE… ARCHIE ANDREWS, WHERE ARE YOU? DIGEST      Feb   1977      May   1998      114
JUGHEAD JONES COMICS DIGEST      Jun   1977      May   1996      100
JOKEBOOK COMICS DIGEST ANNUAL      Oct   1977      Oct   1983      13
LITTLE ARCHIE COMICS DIGEST      Oct   1977      May   1991      48      (Issues #1-15 are ANNUALs)
   ARCHIE'S SUPER HERO SPECIAL COMICS DIGEST         1978         1979      2
BETTY AND VERONICA DIGEST      Nov   1980      Oct   2010      208      Continues as B & V FRIENDS DOUBLE DIGEST #209; (Issues #1-4 are ANNUALs)
   CAPTAIN HERO COMICS DIGEST         1981               1      (One-shot)
ARCHIE DOUBLE DIGEST      Jan   1982               now   266+ issues (2016)
ARCHIE'S ACTIVITY COMICS DIGEST         1985      Aug   1986      4      Replaced by ARCHIE'S STORY AND GAME DIGEST
ARCHIE'S STORY AND GAME DIGEST      Nov   1986      Jan   1998      39
BETTY AND VERONICA DOUBLE DIGEST      Jun   1987               now   253+ issues (2016)
KATY KEENE COMICS DIGEST         1987      Jul   1990      10
THE NEW ARCHIES DIGEST      Oct   1987      May   1990      22
BETTY AND VERONICA ANNUAL DIGEST      Sep   1989      Jun   1997      16      Not to be confused with the identically-titled digest from 1980-83 (#1-4)
JUGHEAD DOUBLE DIGEST       Oct   1989      Feb   2014      200      Replaced by JUGHEAD AND ARCHIE DOUBLE DIGEST
ARCHIE'S PALS 'n' GALS DOUBLE DIGEST      Nov   1992      Nov   2010      146      Replaced by ARCHIE AND FRIENDS DOUBLE DIGEST
   VERONICA'S DIGEST      Nov   1992      Dec   1995      6
ARCHIE ALL CANADIAN DIGEST      Aug   1996      Aug   1996      1      (One-shot)
   BETTY'S DIGEST      Nov   1996      Nov   1997      2
   ARCHIE'S HOLIDAY FUN DIGEST      Feb   1997      Dec   2007      12
JUGHEAD AND FRIENDS DIGEST      Jun   2005      Jul   2010      38      Replaced JUGHEAD WITH ARCHIE DIGEST
TALES FROM RIVERDALE DIGEST      Jul   2005      Aug   2010      39      Replaced LAUGH COMICS DIGEST
WORLD OF ARCHIE DOUBLE DIGEST      Oct   2010               now      67+ issues (2016); Replaced ARCHIE DIGEST
ARCHIE AND FRIENDS DOUBLE DIGEST      Dec   2010      Jan   2014      33      Replaced ARCHIE'S PALS 'n' GALS; replaced by ARCHIE'S FUNHOUSE
B & V FRIENDS DOUBLE DIGEST      Jan   2011               now   253+ issues (2016); Continued from BETTY AND VERONICA DIGEST #208
ARCHIE'S FUNHOUSE DOUBLE DIGEST      Mar   2014               now   26+ issues (2016); Replaced ARCHIE AND FRIENDS DOUBLE DIGEST
JUGHEAD AND ARCHIE DOUBLE DIGEST      Apr   2014               now      26+ issues (2016); Replaced JUGHEAD DOUBLE DIGEST

How about those nice round numbers that a lot of the digests ended their runs with? ACP used to like to celebrate anniversary issues by replacing an old digest title with an entirely new one!

For the longest time period of time there, Archie, B&V, and Jughead all had two simultaneously-ongoing digest titles. That's because one of them was a standard-sized Comics Digest, while the other was the Double Digest for each of the three.

Note, however, that there was a period of time -- six and half years, from Fall 1989 through Spring 1996 -- when JUGHEAD could claim the distinction of having three ongoing digest titles: Jughead With Archie Comics Digest, Jughead's Double Digest, AND The Jughead Jones Comics Digest Magazine.

Apart from the short runs of Veronica's (Passport) Digest and Betty's Digest, and excluding such titles as Little Archie Digest, The New Archies Digest, Archie's Pals 'n' Gals Double Digest, Archie & Friends Double Digest, which were less focused on ARCHIE as a character than, well ... everyone, even Archie only has Archie Double Digest, Archie's Funhouse Double Digest, and World of Archie Double Digest being published right now, the latter two of which are less-likely to be packed with exclusively-Archie stories. When those three Jughead digests were all being published at the same time, more than 90% of those stories reprinted ALL had Jughead in them.
