Signed up for Hoopla using my still active Chicago Public Library ID card,

was able to sigh up and log in,  no Archie comics found, does not work!  :tickedoff:

What a useless piece of sh*t this is.  :tickedoff: Thumbs down to whoever recommended this crap!  :tickedoff:

Sounds like your library didn't purchase the Archie titles or maybe they're coming soon. I closed my library account because I'm moving to a new state. Anyone else try? @60BettyandReggie @BettyReggie. I know you guys like libraries.

I had a look, but while it is connected to 3 adjacent systems, mine and the other that I've had a card for aren't on it ... sounds like it's not an issue though if it only "borrows" from your own system — I can do that already ... some sort of inter-library would be the only advantage.

I didn't even know about this Hoopla thing. I need more info. Is it free? How does it work?
I'll try it this afternoon when I get home. Hopefully our libraries have it.

It was mentioned in the Shout box, and by Jonathan on this week's Riverdale Podcast. You probably missed it.
Note that as @irishmoxie mentions, not all library systems may offer the titles published by ACP or it may be too soon for some libraries to have added them yet.

FIRST, go here and see if you have a library card with one their 950 participating library partners. Registration is free.
HOOPLA registration page -
https://www.hoopladigital.com/register

If you have a valid library card for one of the participating libraries, you'll need to complete the registration and download the appropriate app for your device (either Apple iOS, Google Android, or Amazon Kindle). The app download is also free. I'm not clear how, or even IF, it works for PC users (I suspect not... but I haven't really looked into it that much).

You can borrow Hoopla Digital titles that are available through your library for free, just as if you were borrowing a print title from the library, for up to 21 days. The number of titles you can borrow at one time will be determined by your local library system.

You can browse through the Archie Comics titles available through Hoopla in different ways on one of these links:

Ronnie

I've been able to find them in searches but when I log in, told not found in Chicago Public Library. Advertised as available NOW, obviously not. This is misleading at best. Already scrubbed from my unit. I expect these to work straight away out of the box. Junk.

Thanks for your help, however.

Oldiesmann

I would recommend contacting Hoopla and/or your local library for help. It's possible that each library system chooses which content to offer through the app.

BUT did you try to see whether you could borrow any other titles besides Archie titles? The app obviously wasn't created JUST for people who like Archie Comics, so if you didn't try to borrow anything else, then you can't legitimately claim it's misleading or doesn't work. The Hoopla service never claims that ALL libraries will carry ALL titles that they have available to them. That's probably strictly at the discretion of the individual library, as far as what titles they want to offer to their members. I understand that that's all you may be interested in, but Hoopla Digital did NOT create the service strictly to service fans of Archie Comics. We haven't heard from anyone else who's actually tried it, and was able to borrow something. Try borrowing a few different books from a few different publishers before you claim it doesn't work, or actually contact someone at HooplaDigital (or better yet, the Chicago Public Library) and ask about the Archie titles. People today are so impatient -- with something they didn't even have to PAY for.  I haven't even had the time to look for my library card(s), because it's been so long since I actually used one. If I can't manage to find one though, I plan to go to my local library and get a new one. I've just been busy. I'd say it's worth a LITTLE bit of effort and patience to try to figure out why you can't get the Archie titles, for that many comics that are FREE, if you can get it to work eventually.

Ronnie

Sort of understand what you're trying to say but it's not my job to debug other people's stuff when it should already work.

It's also pretty sad when the 3rd largest city in the country that should have access to this and it doesn't.

Says a lot about Chicago.

Ronnie

Basically, they're saying "it's available everywhere now"  :)

What they're not saying is that "it's our job to get the libraries to get it"  >:(

I'm saying "stick it".  :D

There's no real evidence that there's anything wrong with the app that needs debugging. I might add that it's not Hoopla's job to demand that any of its participating libraries offer any particular titles, if the library chooses not to. Hoopla did not develop the service out of pure altruism, so that means the libraries pay for access to the titles available, and it's likely that each publisher's titles that a library chooses to offer its members involves a separate fee paid by the library to Hoopla (just like they have to buy the printed books that fill the library's shelves). The Chicago Public Library has access to Hoopla's titles if you were able to register with Hoopla using your library card there. If the Chicago Public Library decided not to pay Hoopla the the fee necessary to offer the Archie titles (which are available to any participating partner of HooplaDigital) to its members (or simply hasn't gotten around to adding them yet), that's hardly Hoopla's fault.

Haven't listened to the podcast in a looooong time.
Well, I just checked and unfortunately our library is not a participating partner  >:(
Thanks though for all the info!

irishmoxie

Ok I borrowed my grandma's library card to try this. She is part of a library system available to about 700,000 people in Ohio. 372 Archie titles are available. You can read them online on the Hoopla website and also can download them to an iPad and read them offline. I guess Ohioans just like Archie more than Chicagoans.  :crazy2:

I wonder what BettyReggie has to say about Hoopla, with her living in NYC and all.
