Title: The end of The Riverdale Podcast!
Post by: playtape on August 18, 2016, 06:44:54 PM
Hey, folks! Jonathan here!

I'm soliciting questions for the last few episodes of the show. As you can tell from the title of this thread, I'm wrapping things up with the podcast, just three more episodes to go! If you've got a question, comment, insult, etc, now's the time to throw it my way. Post them below and I'll answer them all on or before the last episode.

Thanks, everyone!

Hi, Jon
I definitely want to call & leave a voice mail for the last show. I want to say your podcast will be missed. I was so happy to hear it on Saturday mornings.

Its Pretty Cool that I know what most people on here sound like.  Anyone else ever read their posts in the voice of the poster?

It's unfortunate to lose the Archie podcast.  Even if it could continue 4-5 times a year would make it worthwhile.  Even weekly is quite a grind for one person.

I hope you'll leave the Archives of older podcasts up online for a while. I never did get caught up on listening to those. Might be a few of those episodes I might even want to download and save.

Come to think of it, before you call it quits on the whole idea, couldn't you just go into "re-runs" for a while, and maybe just do a new one once in a while, without the pressure of having a weekly deadline over your head?  Or maybe some sort of quickly-edited compilation of "the best of" clips culled from highlights of past podcasts, with say, just five or ten minutes worth of news and comments on current stuff?

I'd like to call in before the final episode.

Also, please leave the archive up for posterity.

Finally, maybe use the blog, since it's there anyway, to post text updates of news and new releases, so we'll still know what's going on in the world of Archie.

I just started listening to the episode posted this past Saturday, August 27, and I now realize what might be the reason of the ending of this podcast. It is clear that Jonathan is not a fan of the new relaunch of Archie and I have to say I agree with him. My feeling is that Archie is becoming like the current Marvel Comics. Don't get me wrong, I think each publisher has the right to do anything it can to maximize the profits (this is the goal), but I am also a believer that readers have the right to stop reading if they don't recognize their heroes anymore.

I am a big fan of Spider-Man and the current stories written by Dan Slott are nothing like the classic Spider-Man. What you see on those pages is a different and new character. This is why I stopped reading hose stories.

Same thing for Archie. The Archie written by Mark Waid and drawn by many different artists is light years far from the classic Archie we all loved.

What do you guys think?

I love the reboot. The story is great. And with all variant covers. It has introduced us to new artists. I never know about Thomas Pitilli before. But now I'm a fan. The same with Betty & Veronica reboot, I didn't know any these female artists before.

I think he generally likes the relaunch.

This is the first episode where I thought he was being more critical of the new ARCHIE, apart from a few minor things in earlier reviews.

@Jon - re: Super Duck. Since he started out as a super-funny animal character (like Mighty Mouse, Hoppy the Marvel Bunny, and a handful of others), it seems weird to say "I hate it when they change him into a superhero". After he'd first been changed (after the initial half-dozen stories) into more of a Donald Duck clone (complete with temper, but short of a couple of nephews) the only time that happened again was in that single issue of LAUGH (2nd series, #24, Oct. 1990) where it was actually the SON of the original Super Duck. Anyway, I like those earliest stories where he was a super-funny animal character (you can find his first appearance in JOLLY JINGLES at the Digital Comic Museum). They're less slavishly imitative of Mighty Mouse than the later version Super Duck was of Carl Barks' version (specifically) of Donald Duck, even down to the drawing style (as I think you guys mentioned with the incidental characters). It's probably not a good idea to put yourself into competition with Carl Barks, because you'll lose.

Oh look, here's a WWII cover where he (like any good patriotic superhero) fought Hitler and Hirohito:

... and hey, look! He really IS cock-eyed on that cover. I thought that was just an expression.

Son of Super Duck:

There's Salem (back when he was still an actual cat, as opposed to a warlock who'd been changed into a cat) wearing some kind of wooly(?) jetpack, and... RoboDuck! ("Your move, creep!")

Here's an odd reference... a ZIPPY (formerly known as "The Pinhead") comic strip by alternative cartoonist Bill Griffith:

Yeah, if only it were that easy, Bill. If only. And... what, Super Duck ISN'T a fantasy??

On a closing note, it took a while, but Disney finally got their revenge:

This version of the Donald Duck character was originated by Disney Comics licensees in Europe, and I think it's the same one that later went under the name Duck Avenger. By then Disney's classic characters had had a bunch of superhero identities:

Good catch with Super Duck, DeCarlo. I have to say that I prefer him in lederhosen than tights!

I know that he wasn't feeling this latest issue of ARCHIE, but I do think overall that he likes the relaunch. At the very least, I don't believe that's why he is discontinuing the podcast.

That always seemed like a particularly weird fashion statement to me. Lederhosen and a little alpine hat. What possible explanation could you give for that? Did he have another job as part of the Disney "cast members" for the Disneyland Matterhorn ride?

What the duck??

The Archie comic books being published now are an entirely different product from what the company has published for seventy-five years and it has an entirely different market as its target.

Regarding the podcast, I'm sorry to see it go although admittedly as my involvement with Archie came to an end and all things Archie become more "reboot-centric", I stopped listening as regularly. Jonathan was always a big supporter of mine and he even did a Die Kitty Die episode a few months book so I will always be appreciative of that and I will also remember our conversations fondly.

I hope to see him again.

I was always partial to lederhosen Superduck myself.

I always thought the lederhosen was part of the attempt to make Supes more along the lines of Donald Duck. When Supes gets his lederhosen, he also gets a cute nephew and a fiery self-destructive temper ala Donald. I figured the lederhosen was an arbitrary fashion choice much like Donald's sailor suit.

When Supes gets his lederhosen, he also gets a cute nephew and a fiery self-destructive temper ala Donald. I figured the lederhosen was an arbitrary fashion choice much like Donald's sailor suit.

Donald Duck had the sailor suit in his first appearance in a Mickey Mouse cartoon "The Wise Little Hen". In that first one, he played a flute to annoy everyone, and more or less acted like a mischievous brat (it was basically just a bit role), so it seems like the character was initially conceived of as an annoying smart-alecky kid. That was actually something parents used to dress little kids in, back in the 1910s and 1920s, little sailor suits. The other reason a cartoon duck would have a sailor suit is that it's a visual metaphor for the old adage "like a duck to water", even though you never saw Donald swimming around in a pond like a duck or anything. Anyway, the sailor suit just stuck.

I don't know, maybe Super Duck was a Swiss immigrant, or he had a thing for mountain-climbing or something. He could have just kept the cape and SD monogrammed shirt. It was just as arbitrary as the name "Super Duck", after he was no longer doing anything super. The name used to drive me wacky for the longest time, before I ever saw the early stories where he actually WAS super. Actually, there's something a little bit "alternative comix"-seeming about the idea of an anthropomorphic duck just walking around in a cape and monogrammed shirt and calling himself Super Duck, but otherwise just living an ordinary life with a regular job and mundane day-to-day problems like everyone else, and no one ever remarking on the name or the way he dresses. I mean, it's a toss-up as to which would be more surreal in real life, someone just walking around doing mundane things while wearing some kind of super-costume or wearing lederhosen, so if no one's going to bat an eye at his wearing lederhosen, then why not a cape and monogrammed shirt?
