Title: The structure of the digests ?
Post by: ASS-P on June 11, 2016, 04:06:41 PM
Once and for all , is the balance of the Archie digests , in general ~ Or , HAS it been , since I get the impression that , in my absence , something has gone a little rotten in Mamaroneck business-wise !!!!!!!!!!! Has it , up until Donald Trump threw his hairpiece in the ring ;D , say , the recent past ~ Have the Archie digests generally had (1) The first story and (2) the last story being new ones ?
Plus maybe some other full-fleged stories , and some filllers/gags of some kind .
What has the general balance/placing of new against old material in the digests been ?

Since the middle of 2014, the first (a.k.a. "lead") story in every digest has been new. The last few months of solicitations for forthcoming ACP products have contained a number solicitation descriptions for digests in which the "lead stories" have NOT been described as "new", but instead "fun", "entertaining", "exciting", etc. which leads me to believe that there is no longer any guarantee that each digest will contain a new story. I suspect they are just keeping Dan Parent employed for as long as it takes to use up the inventory of already-purchased scripts.

You don't think they'll eventually get rid of Mr. Parent after getting enough scripts written and drawn, do you?

I suppose as long as they're still publishing Archie digests, they will need covers. Also artwork for various merchandising efforts. I'm afraid even the reprinting of classic Archie stories has sunk to an all-time low.

...Meaning that the choice of stories that are reprinted has gone downhill in quality ?

No, I was thinking QUANTITY, meaning they are reprinting fewer stories than ever because the digests are all that is left (and last year, JUGHEAD AND ARCHIE and ARCHIE'S FUNHOUSE got cut back to 6x/year frequency). No more trade paperbacks (apart from those that just reprint the same digests, i.e. 1000 Page & Giant Comics) since a year ago (single exception was last October's BEST OF ARCHIE COMICS: 75 YEARS 75 STORIES -- TBOAC is an annual affair, or was... remains to be seen).

But since you bring it up, yes I think the overall assembly of stories for digests has gone downhill (apart from new stories). There used to be a better variety of stories, but now it seems they are aiming more and more for a "homogenized" approach (I call it "bland").

I wish they would do themes for the digests which is why I like the digital exclusives aka PEP comics better overall. Like for the Summer Annuals do all summer stories. Instead, they do a few Halloween stories in the beginning and end for the Halloween digests.

In that case he might be there till the end, the George Gladir inventory scripts alone must be a foot high, there's also the new Kevin book for him to work on. But as you've said before the end is probably very near if it isn't happening already, maybe Veritas owns the company now for all practical purposes.

I'm curious how you can know this, Daren.  ???   George Gladir died over 3 years ago. Do you have some way of estimating how many pages of unpublished scripts ACP has in its inventory, and if so, then how? It seems counterintuitive to me that the company could have been running on an extremely tight budget for a number of years now, and yet maintained the practice of continuing to purchase scripts well in advance of its schedule for actually publishing them. Based on that reasoning, I would think the number of remaining scripts (assuming they quit purchasing new ones some months in advance of ceasing to commission new work from artists like Lindsey, Shultz, Galvan, the Kennedys, and finally Fernando Ruiz) would be limited enough that they might be used up by the end of this year.

Point taken about the new Kevin series, but then it's only a miniseries, likely to be concluded by the end of 2016, perhaps before any inventory of paid-for scripts runs out.

It is a very sad state in ACP when a statement like the one you just made is the truth. The Digests have always seemed to be the backbone on this company of late and with that slipping as well I don't know what other tricks they may have up there sleeves to put another temporary bandaid on things.
