Title: Why read comics is not as popular as in the past?
Post by: nuageo on April 09, 2016, 08:54:34 PM
Why read comics is not as popular as in the past?

Other recreational activities have simply become more popular in recent years.
A lot of kids who might have otherwise read comics instead play video games.

And Internet takes much of our free time.  ;D

Social Media is just out of control with kids and teens today as well as texting on there phones. I have never been a fan of Social Media or texting all the time because I am more of an active person when it comes to using my free time. When I was a kid things that got in my way of reading Archie Comics was going to the skate park and skateboarding or practicing my guitar. I still do those things quite a bit.

I blame social media and he internet too. It just takes up so much of our time. I know I used to read a lot more as a kid than I do now but I also didn't have a job then. I think social media influences kids today in that they won't read something if it's not deemed cool. I know that stopped a lot of people from reading the Jem and the Holograms comic because the movie bombed. Even though the comic is awesome.

Media in general influences just about everything that goes on this this world and to me that is quite sad. That goes from anything from music, movies all the way to politics. Take for examples something that occurred not to far back in my home State where we had riots going on from a Police related death a a criminal in custody. Whenever the cameras were rolling the rioters got way worse and started throwing rocks at the cops, busting police cars, and setting them on fire, looting. Once a day or two past and the media and cameras got tired of the story the riots quickly calmed down and then fizzled to nothing. The media(social or national) stirs the pot bot positively and negatively all the time.

These days a lot of people can text before they can write, but reading in general (especially books) has suffered a lot ...

I chalk it up to the almighty technology advances. Not all technological advances help out in every way. I imagine even before my generation and I am 21 that reading levels started to slip because kids preferred to play video games and eventually use the internet instead of practicing reading. I expect it is getting even worse in the school systems today.

Poor quality and even worse distribution.

Video games and the Internet get a lot of blame but if the quality were there and comics were easier to find by the casual impulse buyer, they would be wider read.

I agree that quality does have something to do with it, but there are some really good comics out there. Distribution maybe a larger issue but I still think this generation is led by the almighty computer technology and that is quickly what kids today know.

Quality is a very subjective thing ... but the distribution network got trashed in the '90s out of pure greed (and by essentially one person) which closed many small comic shops just when they weren't as prevalent on news-stands any more (largely due to comic shops)

I don't understand the question.

I think they are saying because of the internet, video games, social media, and other computer technologies that youngsters today are deciding to do those activities instead of picking up a comic book or other books and reading.

It makes me wonder why webcomics aren't booming. Though I feel like I have to slog through a lot of crap to get to the good stuff.

Nobody reads anymore and a lot of kids are couch potatoes. Texting, television, social media. Even my younger sister has to check her instagram daily to see how many likes her photo gets. I make sure I am active, i go out as much as I can. I admit i do use the internet on my free time, but i make time for internet, television, and I also make time for going out which i do more during the day. Nothing wrong with picking up a good comic book during my free time and reading it, especially on a nice warm sunny day outside :)

I'm a kid and I really think there is time for both. You just have to prioritize your day. I have time during the week for the things that have to get done like school and homework and then whatever time is leftover I like to mix and match different things. I really don't use Social Media sites, but I do love listening/watching YouTube videos. I also like texting my friends especially contacting the ones back in South Africa. I don't really use my free time that much to watch T.V. that much. I do however watch a movie if I rent something I really want to see. I also use quite a bit of my time practicing my drumming which can be exercise in itself. Then it is the stuff I do outside, I enjoy going to the park down the way and just swing on swings for a long time. That may seem like a lot, but it also leaves time to read a comic book from time to time.
