Never seen them before, very well done.  :smitten:

That's actually 10 years old now (2006 I think.) I would draw it differently today for sure.
Archie wanted to try something different art wise with Josie, sort of like they are doing now with their main title, and I was asked to draw sample pages. I tried something different (as asked.) It's probably a good thing they didn't go for it as I'm cringing a bit looking at this now.
In any case, whether I like what I did here or not, Josie & the Pussycats IS the property I have interest in over at Archie.
I finally got my chance to do a short story in a digest about a year ago now. I would've like to have done more for the property, and done my way, but it's not in the cards, I'm afraid. At least it's one item off the bucket list now.

That story was great, and so was the one Sabrina story you got to do (not counting her appearance in ARCHIE). I'm sorry you never got to do more. I really loved the way those turned out.

Thanks! Since I knew this was going in the digests (and would probably be a one time thing,) I tried my best to make it in the classic style. Left to my own devices, on a run I can call my own, I'd tweak it a bit, but it would still have that DeCarlo/Archie house style feel.

Looking at those old pencils and these newer ones from that digest last year...

It's quite the change!

Thanks! It was great to see those a little larger and in black and white. I'd have loved to see that become a regular (or even semi-regular) feature in one of the B&V digests, but timing is everything I guess, and new classic Archie stories just started drying up like a puddle on a hot summer day... alas.  :(

I've been kind of collecting rejected artists/writers/etc who wanted to draw 'Josie' stories and sent their samples in on my blog. Most of the artists/writers say they never heard from Archie Comics about their samples/ideas. Some of these artists are now pretty well-known and have successful comic series of their own.

It's always been kind of odd to me that they don't do more 'Josie' stuff considering most people I talk to remember more about 'Josie' than they do 'Archie.' (Thanks to the cartoon re-runs on Boomerang/the old Cartoon Network.) But considering how many times in the past they tried to re-start the series (2000's, the 'manga') maybe it just doesn't sell well enough in comic book form??

But it was very nice to see that short story drawn by Gisele.  :)

Thanks, CAPalace!

If I hadn't kept bugging them to get comments on my pages back in 2006, I don't think I would have gotten any feedback myself. I insisted for feedback 'cause I thought it was weird to be asked, and then ignored. In the end, they didn't care for the result, which is fine, BUT it seems they weren't happy with the results of others too 'cause nothing happened with the property since. When I did the samples, they were trying out this manga style which didn't last very long.

And yeah, I grew up on Josie more than Archie. Like, in my eyes, Josie was bigger.

I find it weird too and it would bug the heck out of me to never hear a word again (it's not polite/good business practice). It was brave that you insisted, everyone else who was asked/volunteered just kind of let it go with a shrug (and then blogged about it later on).

It's so sad they went with that manga route (it was bad imo sorry lol) and not with anyone else. I mean, yeah in 2006 it was the hot thing for American companies to try to go into manga, but most if not all of it failed miserably because they didn't understand that manga isn't just popular because how it is drawn. Like, if you just draw everything in manga style doesn't mean it will be popular/have a larger audience without having a good story, good writing, etc. as well.

I can't say that this was the case to be sure, but the person that had approached me to do these samples eventually left Archie to go work at Marvel, so it's possible that when they got the samples in from everyone, he left around the same time, and maybe who ended up in charge of this had too much going on (maybe even lost some contacts?) and that's why this happened. Again, I'm not sure here.

When I did these samples in 2006 (along with others) the "manga-style" Josie was actually going on. I think they were trying to move away from it as I don't think it was doing quite well (the reason they requested samples from a few people.) Those 3 pages I did were based on a script that was already written. I had never seen the pages though of the manga version. I did end up seeing it one day. Here is the same script but in their "manga" style:

I agree with you that "manga" is about more than art, it's about an storytelling style as well. In any case, they made an effort, and because it didn't work, they sort of decided "manga" was a dead end. I think it could've possibly worked if done slightly different. It wasn't all bad, just not good enough to compete with what was out there at the time.

Nice to see the version with some script to it  ;)

Also Melody has some 'Penny' feel to it.

Nothing to do with JATP, but anyone interested in viewing Gisele's original art pages for ARCHIE #636 ("The Great Switcheroo!") can do so >HERE (http://www.comicartfans.com/archive/comics-issue.asp?IssueId=992105)
