Let's try to list the obscure (non-one-shot) characters that have appeared over the decades. Characters that were recurring for a while but then just disappeared.
Joani and Debbie from the '80s Jughead title.
Kumi Tanura and her younger sister, Ami - Japanese girls that moved to Riverdale. Kumi attends RHS. Her "thing" was being very naive about American culture. Ami has a crush on Archie. At home, their mother keeps up Japanese traditions and etiquette.
Crystal - a girl that ran a New Age store in the mall in the early 1990s; she endorsed transcendental meditation and other such things.
Adam Betty's other boyfriend. He was hot. I really wish they keep him. And I wish he involved in the Life with Archie , where Archie married Betty. Betty could had affair then it would be like soap opera. Betty had a cool friend who had multi color hair named Brandy who was cool. I wish they keep her in the stories.
Jinx Malloy & his girlfriend Penny
Cricket O'Dell
The Glads (and their entourage)
Googie Gilmore
...
Bunny and Cedric, Pembrooke residents and Cheryl and Jason's best friends.
It seem like they got rid of Ethel, she hasn't been in the Archie reboot or the Jughead reboot. Even the show hasn't casted an actress for Ethel.

- Rita Sanchez (former Vice-Principal) and her daughter Sandy (who had a thing for Jughead)
- Mr. Rodriguez (another former Vice-Principal, father of Maria)
- Patton Howitzer (another former Vice-Principal... I think they all just take the next job available at a school where Archie isn't a student)
- Nick St. Clair ("Bad Boy Trouble")
- Bella Beazly (one spicy cook, daughter of Cafeteria lady Bernice Beazly)
- Tono Diaz (from Mexico, his parents are party planners, he wants to be a chef when he grows up)

- Jared McGerk (school bully during "Freshman Year")
- Shinji Yamagi (young warlock and potential rival for Harvey Kinkle)
- Buddy Drumhead (friend of Teddy Tambourine)
- Bippy the Hippy (semi-replacement for the hippy version of Clyde Diddit)

Oh, right. Mixed her up with the Dick Tracy character "Gertie Gravel". There was also at least one other Archie story where the name "Greta Grappler" was used for the name of a female wrestler. Don't know if there was any connection, or similar appearance, between the two.

Tomoko Yoshida first appeared back in 1991 in the semi-obscure ACP giveaway comic, ARCHIE AND HIS PALS IN... THE PEER HELPING PROGRAM.
(As seen here on the cover, seated next to Jughead.)

After that, she didn't reappear until BETTY #150 (Nov. 2005), after which she started appearing (mostly in B&V stories) with more frequency for a year or two... then faded back into obscurity. She still turned up on occasion, even a couple of years back, but there are less and less opportunities for her to do anything meaningful in the stories as time goes on... shrinking panel space at ACP.
Here's a couple of lists...

+1 to DR for Tomoko — Akira is her (slightly) younger brother ...
Kumi Tanura — first appeared in the new story in Betty & Veronica Digest #190 (not Double) and was in the multi-part "Battle of the BFFs" story paired with Brigitte Reilly ... plus a few other random appearances scattered over a ½ dozen different stories and issues

That's terrible!
What was the name of a character we were talking about in the old forum, a boy that was Betty's love interest for a few issues? I think someone mentioned he was a reporter?
Betty dated Adam & Jason & Reggie & Trey. That's only I could think of.

Dexter Howard, WPBJ Channel 10 news photographer? From BETTY AND ME #197-200?

If you change the art style, there's probably no point in Ethel existing any more. Her only function as a character was to be the one who wasn't pretty like the other girls, an awkward ugly duckling who chased Jughead relentlessly and was sort of his nemesis. I mean, let's face it, those were her only real defining characteristics.
But it really doesn't matter now, if Erica Henderson's drawing JUGHEAD. Now
everybody's ugly looking, even the girls who are supposed to be pretty, like Betty. Makes it kind of difficult to get the point across through the artwork that Ethel is supposed to be significantly less attractive than most of the other girls.
What would Erica H come up with if asked to draw "ugly"? Do we want to know? Anyway, she's leaving so hopefully we won't have to ...
Ethel? Tall, skinny, good at sports, nice, but low self-esteem — I'd say she mostly chases Jug because she wants a boyfriend and he's conspicuously unattached ... no one is chasing her and she doesn't believe she can compete — you don't need ugly for that ...

Ah, yes. That's the one. The very elusive Dexter 'cause I still can't find any pics of him.
If anyone has those Betty issues please share them with us. At least some panels.

I actually liked the older version who took the universe just piling on her in stride. The low esteem thing happened mostly with Al Hartley. Mr. !!! at the end of every sentence. :)

;D ;D
I just can't believe we haven't seen Ethel at all in first 5 Jughead issues. Do you think Trula Tywst will be in any issue. Jughead & Trula love hate relationship was awesome. I miss their fights. I think should be since January Andrews had be in one or two issues.
She has to show up at some point. It'll be fun to see what they do with her.
I agree both Ethel and Trula have to be used at some point in the near future at least in the Jughead Reboot. I am thinking Ethel would appear first, but you never know. I hope they use Ethel in a very similar way as they used her in the classic Archie comics where she is chasing Jughead and trying to lure him with food. As for Trula they have to have her using her wit against Jughead in someway.

For older women, Patty Pacer and Ms. Phlips look hot. ;)

Trula Twyst

:P
How about Ophelia Glutenschnable, who was basically a predecessor to Big Ethel?

I have been reading some digital exclusive lately and a character popped up I know I have seen before but not many time and that is Jinx Malloy. Can anyone tell me approximately how many times he may have appeared in stories? There was also a Girls P.E. Teacher who has a handicap named Ms. Gantner who leads the Riverdale Boys Basketball Team to victory also teaching Reggie a lesson. I do not remember seeing her used previously.
Does anyone remember Miss Shapely from Riverdale High? Va-va-voom!!! :smitten:

Yes, she was a substitute teacher and she had the perfect name because she had a very nice shape.
How about another teacher the Drama Teacher Ms. Lovett?
I vaguely remember Ms. Lovett by name, but I can't recall what she looks like unfortunately.
I'm surprised that in the new Jughead reboot there's no JellyBean. I wonder if she ever be add. I only saw Hot Dog in one issue of the reboot. And Ethel is no where to be seen.

I have a feeling that Ethel will be in the next story arc. I also have a feeling that Jellybean doesn't exist... yet.

I just recall she was the Drama Teacher.
We could probably start a whole topic about obscure Riverdale High faculty members. There have been dozens of random ones over the years - some who only appear for one story and others who appear whenever they're needed (such as guidance counselor Mr. Meeks).

I don't remember Mr. Meeks at all.
He didn't show up very often. I think he's one of the characters that Bob Bolling came up with.

I will have to keep an eye out for him in the future.
What was RHS's school guidance counselor's name again? I know there have been a couple, but I'm talking about the one they had for a few years where they'd have a story where he meets with a student, and after the student leaves he's all stressed out and thinking about quitting because the students are driving him bonkers...

I think you maybe talking about Mr. Jenkins.
How about Veronica's Nerdy Cousin Marcy McDermott?
Anyone remember Scott Pansky? He seemed to be a one-off throwaway character in his few appearances, but he was a real life person included in the comics.
