General Thoughts on Current and Future Tech.

This is the discussion thread for Current and Future Tech, and why we love it, and hate it!

Ok.  Let me start off by saying, Technology doubles every 18 months.  With that in mind our current 4k TV's will be outdated in one and a half years.  By that time, 8K will be prominent, and One and a Half years after that, 16K.  It will continue likes this for awhile, until we decide that we have good enough resolution (never?).

Timeline:

1080P - 2014
4K - 2015
8K - 2017
16K - 2019
32K - 2021
64K - 2024
128K - 2027
256K - 2030
512K - 2040
1080K - 2060

So, by my estimate, 1080K (not 1080p) will be prominent around 2060.  What will come after that?  I don't know.  Perhaps we will stop making better resolution, or hopefully quantum computing will be mainstream.

Hard Drives:

It is exciting to imagine that all your precious data could fit on ONE drive (with a backup or two, of course)!  So, even though Hard Drives are estimated to only hold 32-36 TB, I'm sure that when the time comes, There will be a breakthrough.  Here is my estimated Timeline:

2016: 12 TB
2018: 24 Tb
2020: 36 TB
2022: 48 TB
2024: 60 TB
2030: 256 TB
2050: 1 PB (Petabyte)
2060: 64 PB
2070: 256 PB
2080: 1 EB (Exabyte)
2090: 12 EB
2100: 128 EB

On January 6, 2016, director James Gunn stated that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be the first (feature) film to be shot in 8K

They've been able to build hard-drive-sized cartridges that hold over 100Tb and are pretty never indestructible for years ... the reader devices are too big, slow and expensive to be commercially viable though — haven't heard much new on that front in a while ... of course the 1 × ½ × 3/16 inch 1TB flash drive I just measured would pack 120TB in the same space ... roughly the same as 128Gb transflash/MicroSD chip (those are available too) ...

DeCarlo Rules

So pretty soon we'll have enough storage space to record every single electrical impulse in our brains, and we can just save a clean copy of ourselves to a hard drive, where it can then embark on its own little virtual life, and continue on that way long after our mortal flesh dies and decomposes. I guess we better get to work on some robots to maintain all those hard drives when our original versions are gone.

^^^ I guess I better call dibs on naming my digital clone before all the good names are taken. I'm gonna call mine "Neo". ^^^

I'm actually pretty excited about the possibilities here, once I get the initial copy of myself saved. I mean, it's an obvious no-brainer that the absolute first thing I'm going to want to do is merge my digital Media Library with my virtual memory files, giving me instant total recall of all my comics, cartoons, movies, photos, etc. Then I'm sure I'll want to tinker around with some modified versions of myself (of course, I'll want to be careful to save a copy of myself before I begin making any changes, so I can Revert To Saved if I'm not happy with the way any of my mods turn out). So many new options for the virtual life!
