  • DeCarlo Rules: It seems like they put extras on a disc because people expect them, or it helps drive sales, but more often than not, it seems like very little thought goes into the content. Of course there are some examples where the extras are exceptional, but usually that's not the case.

  • irishmoxie: I love digital movies and streaming. I usually get the Blu-ray Disc because I like to watch the extras the first time and then end up adding the digital code online or rip it and put it on the hard drive. Just much more convenient to stream it then search for the disc when I want to watch it.

  • DeCarlo Rules: On the other hand, maybe I should just bypass the Blu-Ray format altogether, buy a huge terabyte HD, and download everything. There's something to be said for that, in that you can get everything quicker and stacks of Blu-Ray cases aren't taking up space in your house, I guess.

  • DeCarlo Rules: This coming from a guy who still hasn't capitulated to the inevitable domination of Blu-Ray. It's getting to the point where I might have to relent, since I've seen some anime sets being released for the first time on Blu-Ray (no combo pak) with NO release of a DVD version.

  • DeCarlo Rules: I'll never get used to people not being able to wait a few days when they order stuff online. I guess maybe I could understand it IF it were something that there was no other way to see, but I assume you've already seen the episodes.  People who are that impatient usually don't even buy disc sets, they just buy it digitally or stream it.

  • DeCarlo Rules: The questions you ask about classic Archie (which is a cartoon on paper) are sort of "real-world logic" questions. A cartoon world, unlike the real world, creates its own rules and its own logic, nonsensical as that might be. Like Wile E. Coyote not being affected by gravity until he looks down and realizes he's run off the edge of the cliff.

  • Tuxedo Mark: With New Riverdale, things kinda make more sense, overall, I guess. With Classic Archie (even new Classic Archie), I find myself often asking "Why is this even an issue?" or "Why would the teen characters even care about this?" With Riverdale, it's absolutely insane bonkers, but everyone involved is in on the joke, so it's fun to just sit back, shut off my brain, and enjoy. :)

  • DeCarlo Rules: What I originally meant by "realistic" is that actors are more convincing at portraying real people on television than lines on paper and words in dialogue balloons are in a comic book.

I just found the coolest thing...
« on: December 18, 2016, 02:47:02 pm »
I was at half price books with my dad today, and as usual, I went to the comics while he went to the video games.
While I was there I found "Archie; His First 50 Years", which is a big book from 25 years ago with comics and commentary (Kinda like "The Art of Betty and Veronica"). This was a cool enough find on its own, its in good condition, and it was only 8 dollars. When I found my dad, he opened it up and said "cool, its even autographed like your other books".
I laughed (because I though he was joking). but then I saw writing, and got really sad because written in the corner was "Happy 50th Birthday Dad! Love Jill"
I considered putting it back, because I didn't want some maybe dead guy's birthday present, but my dad convinced me to get it anyways.
I was still having my doubts, but then my dad open up the book all the way and I saw "Charles Phillips 8/25/92"
who was the author of the book.
It sucks that it has the "Happy 50th Birthday Dad!" thing, but the autograph is super cool, especially since its from 24 years ago.

I wish you'd asked about it first, but oh well... it's only 8 dollars, I guess. I had bought the book last year and found it very disappointing. At the time it was first published I guess there wasn't much out there that was comparable, but now much better books have been published, both in terms of reprint collections, and text history. In terms of collections, any of the BEST OF ARCHIE COMICS series of trade paperbacks, or the decade-by-decade reprint collections Best of the Forties, Best of the Fifties, Best of the Sixties, Best of the Seventies, Best of the Eighties, and Best of the Nineties -- there are two trade paperbacks for each decade (published by ACP), or a combined reprint of both volumes of each trade paperback in hardcover from IDW for the '40s, '50s, '60s, and '70s (IDW didn't reprint the Best of the Eighties or Nineties in hardcover).

In terms of a history of Archie Comics, this is the book to get:

yeah, I have most of the other collections, and this isn't the best book for the history of Archie Comics, but I have others, and I mostly got it just to add to my collection. It was really cheap so I couldn't resist.
