MIRACULOUS: TALES OF LADYBUG & CAT NOIR, a CGI-animated kid superheroes series.

I watched the 7 episodes on the DVD, and was absolutely charmed by this show. A Vol. 2 DVD is due at the end of August. The show began airing in December 2015 on Nick at noon on Sundays, and the complete first season will have 26 episodes, 12 of which still have not aired on Nick (they air earlier on TB1 in Paris, where the series began in October 2015).

The CGI animation is movie-quality, looking something like a Dreamworks or Pixar animated film, as opposed to the sometimes lower-budget quality you usually get for television animation.

There were something like 7 or 8 different companies involved in producing and/or funding this series, which is shown in 120 countries worldwide. The basic concept is similar to something like Barbie in Princess Power, but otherwise that comparison does Miraculous a disservice. The superheroes here are a fusion of American style with their Japanese counterparts, the highly-stylized magical girl/henshin hero genres (which basically use the same tropes but the magical girl genre is almost completely anime, while the henshin hero genre is almost completely tokusatsu). Like the latter, all the episodes have a rigid (but comforting) format, in which certain things will always occur, and in a specific order. A good deal of emphasis is placed on the ritual of the transforming sequence, with its codified poses and movements, each hero has an "akuma" (a magical creature/pet), a "miraculous" special transforming totem (earring/ring) which absorbs their akuma to transform them, a special weapon (yo-yo/baton), and a 'final move' superpower (lucky charm/catastrophe) - after using which, they'll use up their power and be shortly forced to transform back to their everyday selves.

There's some rom-com stuff in here too, with Marinette (Ladybug) having a secret crush on 10th-grade classmate Adrien (Cat Noir), that leaves her tongue-tied and flustered in his presence, acting all shy and goofy, while Cat Noir is brash and boastful when with Ladybug, and totally smitten by her. Marinette is klutzy and insecure, but as Ladybug she's competent, confident and the natural leader of the pair. Since she has a crush on Adrien (who's a male model when he's not being a student) she holds the overeager Cat Noir at arm's length. You can get some of the flavor of this from clips of the show on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iiq2qS1Alzw (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iiq2qS1Alzw)

from Wikipedia:
QuoteSet in modern-day Paris, the series focuses on teenageMarinette Dupain-Cheng and her classmate and crush Adrien Agreste. When evil arises, Marinette transforms into her secret superhero persona Ladybug, while Adrien transforms into his superhero persona Cat Noir, using powerful objects known as the Miraculous. Oblivious to each other's true identities, the two work together to protect Paris from the mysterious villain Hawk Moth, who covets and attempts to steal their powers by using his akuma, butterflies infused with black energy, to influence and transform everyday citizens into supervillains.

More Season 1 episodes of Miraculous Ladybug on YouTube.

Yesterday I watched Dawn of the Planet of the Apes on DVD. What a great film. The first one was really good, but the sequel is excellent, even better. THAT, in my opinion, is how to do a reboot. They really took only the most basic concept from the original film franchise (ignoring the original novel by Pierre Boule entirely, as well as the atrocious Tim Burton reboot misfire) to come up with a completely original new spin, with an all-new story and characters (there's one character who's only vaguely based on one from the previous movie franchise). An intelligent, well-scripted and acted film, and fairly scary to boot. Definitely much more believable in this new incarnation.

Season one of 'Hullabaloo' (1965). I got what survives of the two seasons from a private collector. Sadly NBC destroyed the color broadcast tapes of the series. Only 4 color episodes survived with the remaining episodes as black and white 16mm kinescopes. It was a fun show, but for me 'Shindig', 'Shivaree' and 'Hollywood a Go-Go' were better shows. I always thought that 'Shivaree' looks like the sets were made with $200 bucks from Home Depot, but needed a millions dollars worth of accident insurance.  But where else could you watch the Rolling Stones perform on a staircase 6 inches from screaming fans?

Yesterday, I drove into the city to an "artsy" cinema to see a limited screening of Shin Godzilla ("shin"="new"), which came out in theaters in Japan in July 2016; this version was subtitled.

This is the first new Toho Godzilla film in a decade, and it was really different. It's a reboot, but really takes a totally different approach to a Godzilla film than any of the past Japanese (or American, for that matter) G-films. I had to agree with my friend Brian's assessment that "It will probably never be one of my favorite Godzilla movies", but it's interesting, at least, in a number of different ways... and I'd say the differences are so multilayered that I'm not sure I can come to any definite conclusions about how I felt about it without seeing it a couple more times, at least.

There's a lot going on in the plot here, and I did get the feeling that some of the nuances and implied things were totally lost on me upon first viewing. Getting to the theater too late to find choice seating didn't help -- I was stuck in the second row, way too close to the screen, considering the subtitles (they appear at both the top and the bottom of the screen), plus the fact that the first half of the movie consists almost entirely of (possibly hundreds of) short shots (under 5 or 10 seconds, with more than half of them only 2 or 3 seconds long) in medium or extreme close-up, constantly cutting back and forth between them. Never can I recall seeing a film in which I was so acutely aware of every single wrinkle, blemish, and pore of every actor's face! So to begin with, the cinematography employed here is radically different, and so is the casting. Most of the actors here aren't your obvious 'types', with no real 'screen-idol' casting, and only a couple of the characters (more by contrast than anything else) emerging as above-average-looking humans. Only the female lead role seems to stray into 'less than plausible' characterization. Aside from that, this film is character-heavy (both in numbers and in emphasis) for a Godzilla film, and dense with dialogue exchanges of a plot-crucial nature. Most of the actors here turned in a fairly credible performance.

Unlike any other G-film, this one focuses on the government's reaction to the sudden appearance (and unprecedented revelation of the very existence) of Godzilla -- the mechanics and politics of the National Emergency Response protocols. That quickly escalates to a global reaction (in political terms) to the Japanese government's response to the crisis, when the governments of other countries assess the rapidly-escalating threat potential of Godzilla as a danger to the rest of the world. Most Godzilla films will focus on an older scientist, plus maybe a younger scientist and a girl (or sometimes with those two gender-reversed), plus the military commander and/or a soldier or pilot, all feet-on-the-ground characters caught up in dealing directly with countering the threat of Godzilla, hands-on, while the actual decision-makers responsible for deploying these people are merely referred to in an offhand line of dialogue or given a token cameo scene or two -- but here, the entire film revolves around the process of determining the "hows" and "whys", and the "what" of the appropriate response (which is nowhere near as clear-cut as you might think) by the politicians of Japan -- the committee meetings, the conflict between various factions of thought within the government, the international reaction, and the Japanese politicians' counter-reactions. That's what amounts to a speculative-fiction extrapolation in government-level Crisis Management scenarios. It's definitely the most 'real world' approach ever taken by a giant monster film, that's for sure. There are no giant robots or sci-fi military vehicles in the story here, and no clear heroic or villainous characters either -- just people, attempting to do what they think is the right thing. The threat of Godzilla itself is the one science-fantasy element that the film allows itself, and then tries to put that threat into the context of a very present-day world reaction. Even the economic impact of the cost of the devastation on the country of Japan is speculated upon in some detail. In the end, the film turns into a race against time, with no margin for error in determining the correct response to "the Godzilla problem", as the Japanese government tries to beat the doomsday deadline of a scheduled U.S. nuclear missile strike (with the support of the United Nations!) aimed at Tokyo. Yet the film doesn't view the American response xenophobically, either, as one of the main Japanese politicos ruefully admits, "They'd do the same if it were New York City."

Astro Boy (1963) - Just the episodes based on the original manga stories (so far).

COBRA: The Animation (2008) - Remake of an old 1980s manga+anime series. Really good animation (much better than 1980s), but they kept all the original character designs and didn't reboot anything (new stories this time around).

GODZILLA ISLAND (1997-98) - A delightfully bizarre Japanese kids' show (256 3-minute episodes, that tell a serialized story, in arcs of 10-20 episodes or so). There are only 3 actors, and the monsters are all portrayed by their own vinyl toy figures (and customized versions used for more range of motion). So... kind of like puppets, but not quite? Maybe a little like Robot Chicken, but not done for parody purposes -- at least on the surface level. I'm totally hooked on this.

Taking a little break from trying to finish watching the rest of ASTRO BOY.

A few days ago I watched BATMAN: THE RETURN OF THE CAPED CRUSADERS, which is an animated feature sequel to the 1966 Batman TV series, starring the voices of Adam West, Burt Ward, and Julie Newmar. Alas, the voices of the Penguin, the Riddler, and the Joker have been replaced, since Burgess Meredith, Frank Gorshin, and Cesar Romero are no longer with us. It was good, but not great. The vocal impersonations of the now-deceased actors are passable if you don't think about it too hard, but there are a number of visual choices the animation producers made which spoil the illusion of a sequel, as does a background score which - when it chooses to evoke the original BG music score of the TV series by Nelson Riddle and Billy Mays, is good - but too often it segues back into the mode of the more cinematic, dramatic music scoring heard in the DC animated series & features of the 1990s-2000s. While that music is fine for those cartoons, here it breaks the mood and doesn't feel true to the spirit of the 1966 TV series. Overall this had the potential to be a much bigger train wreck than it turns out to be, but while most aspects of it are decent, it falls short not so much in the animation itself, the voice acting, or the script/plot, but in the details. There are just a number of puzzling choices made by the producers that make me wonder "Why??"

This morning I started watching SCOOBY-DOO: MYSTERY INCORPORATED, which aired on Cartoon Network a couple of years back. This is a complete reboot of the original series, but a good one. By that I mean it gives its viewing audience credit for some intelligence, and tries to give the characters a little actual development and flesh them out a bit, and while they do get a lot of mileage out of self-mockingly referencing "...and I would have gotten away with it too, if it hadn't been for those meddling kids!" in every episode, this version of S-D is nowhere near as mind-numbingly formulaic and repetitious as the original series was. While the greatest mystery of the original premise is never solved (i.e., how can a dog talk, read, and have an almost-human level of intelligence), we do find out some things about Fred, Daphne, Shaggy, and Velma. This series established that they are teenagers in high school (although I haven't seen an episode where they're actually in school yet) and live in a town named Crystal Cove, self-proclaimed as "The Most Hauntedest Place on Earth". We meet all of their parents, which goes a long ways towards explaining why they are all such weird kids. We find out that Daphne and Velma are both pining away with unrequited romantic feelings for Fred and Shaggy, respectively (Fred is just completely oblivious, while Shaggy is totally devoted to Scooby). And there is an ongoing subplot running through the entire series of 52 episodes.

Interesting. You understand Cantonese?

If so, it would seem ironic to me, as I would think there would be much more interesting films (i.e. films made in China, and otherwise not dubbed or subtitled in English) that you could be watching. I don't know anything about Enchanted (it could be a good film), but seems like it would be easily available in the language it was filmed in, wouldn't it?

Have you seen The Mermaid, directed by Stephen Chow (Kung Fu Hustle)? That's kind of a Disney-esque story that was (I believe) originally filmed in Cantonese.

EDIT: Oops, my bad. Should have checked first -- it's actually in Mandarin.

I'm watching Eyewitness. I loved it so much during the run I thought I'd rewatch it! It's a show about two gay boys who witness a triple homicide. It's very intense. Though it gets more and more colorless every time I see it. I hate this desaturated culture we live in.

I've been binge-watching SCOOBY-DOO: MYSTERY INCORPORATED, trying to get through a single DVD disc (6-7 half-hour episodes) a day. It's been pretty addictive (this is the first time I've seen any of these) and amazing on so many levels: the writing, parody/satire, characterization, ongoing subplots. There are so many interesting things about this show, whether you admit to being a fan of Scooby-Doo or not. I always liked the general premise of the original cartoon, but the writing was pretty bad and it was repetitious, and it was hard to sit through viewing multiple episodes without getting quickly bored. This rebooted version of the show is obviously aimed at an older audience. It's smart writing, and not only that, there's an ongoing mystery that links all the episodes together. As the seasons progress, there are lots of new characters introduced. Some of them are ongoing, while some of them return unexpectedly in much later episodes. There's both comedy and drama in the series, with the levels of danger, action, tension, and scariness being slowly ratcheted up as the seasons progress, and the ongoing mystery being slowly revealed as more and more complex. They do a lot of plotting where it sets up an obvious suspect to be behind each episode's mystery, but the obvious suspect invariably turns out NOT to be the perpetrator. And the monsters actually get quite scary as the episodes progress (even though you know that there has to be a scene in the end where a rubber mask gets pulled off to reveal the villain). At least they're scary in the context of a cartoon, and what's happening at that moment in the episode's plot. The animators came up with some impressive monster designs, and lighting, camera angles, and animation timing are all used to good effect, as are vocal and sound FX. Sometimes the monsters or ghosts are so impressive that the inevitable explanation at the end of the episode seems a little implausible. Then there is the ongoing romantic tension between Daphne and Fred, Velma and Shaggy, and even Scooby and... that goes through many twists and turns over the course of the series. I could probably write a few thousand more words on several of the specific episodes - it's that good.

I might watch this even though I'm not that into Scooby Doo. I need some more comedy.

I've just been watching random movies on Netflix: Blackfish, Naomi and Ely's No Kiss List, GBF.

Trust me, I'm NOT that into Scooby-Doo... or wasn't, until I watched THIS show. You'll like this if you give it a chance. It builds up slowly at first. There's even a girly episode with a girl band called the Hex Girls:
(https://www.archiefans.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fvignette2.wikia.nocookie.net%2Fscoobydoo%2Fimages%2F4%2F4d%2FHex_Girls_Season_2.png%2Frevision%2Flatest%3Fcb%3D20131108063454&hash=430634361a351d61e908cb57444167d1de8aaaf6) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulaDQ-2gsak)
(Click on pic for music clip.)

Here's another clip from that same episode, where Daphne goes undercover as bait for the monster, posing as the band's new lead singer:
(https://i.ytimg.com/vi/DZNQZ3hUzyU/hqdefault.jpg) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5ezpBKEdAE)
(Click to go to the clip. I can't really explain the significance of the song title "Trap of Love", but that's something you'll only understand when you get to know Fred Jones.)

At first I thought that the Hex Girls was a one-off episode thing, but they make a return appearance (I won't say exactly where or how) in the 2nd Season*. There's a lot of that in this series, where you think you'll never see certain characters again after their initial episode, but they wind up returning again unexpectedly somewhere later on. Continuity is very strong in this series and episodes HAVE to be watched in order (they all even have Chapter #s at the beginning of each episode's title card). I just finished watching the 2nd (and last) Season ending yesterday, and it was absolutely awesome and unexpected. The ongoing plot really heats up in the last few episodes. Can't recommend this series highly enough. So many good things in here, with references to every horror movie trope imaginable, from Vincent Price movies to The Shining, to Twin Peaks(!) -- that last one caught me by surprise. Don't want to say too much more, because the surprises were a big part of the fun of watching the show, knowing very little in advance about it.

(*I also just discovered, while looking for those music clips, that the Hex Girls apparently appeared in one or more other Scooby-Doo DTV features, so maybe it's some kind of new ongoing house band for Mystery Inc.)

I really liked the Hex Girls one. I've watched about 10 episodes so far.

I didn't even think too much about the song "Trap of Love" Daphne was singing, while I was watching the episode the first time, but watching it again now just as I posted the link above, I suddenly understood the deeper meaning of all of the lyrics of the song. Daphne knows that as soon as she sings a song about a trap, Fred will be mesmerized by it, which may be the only way she can get him to pay attention to her and communicate with him. Daphne is trying to explain to him how frustrated she feels right now, but it's about more than just being used as bait to catch the Phantom. She feels trapped by her own feelings of love for Fred that aren't being returned, and the song is like a final wake-up call to him before it's too late. For her, that love is turning to pain, and she may have to cut off her own feelings to save herself. But it's clear when they cut to Fred's reaction (practically blank, yet confused) as Velma asks "What do you think of the new song?", that he's fascinated, yet dumbfounded. He still doesn't get it yet.

That's pretty amazing writing, because... things are changing between them. It turns out it only matters as far as the evolution of the relationship between Daphne and Fred over the course of the series, and even that doesn't make sense until you learn why it is that Fred is obsessed with traps and can't relate emotionally or express his feelings. Because, you just assume from the first episode that he's a big dumb handsome hunk, that's all -- like it's just a cartoon character cliche thing that doesn't require explaining or wondering about. But by the time everything about Fred's background becomes clear, all the pieces fit together perfectly.

Going back almost a week or so...

THE ROOTS OF JAPANESE ANIME Up To WWII - Interesting DVD with 8 short films from 1930-39 (all under 15 minutes, in B&W) and one longer one made in 1942. The latter is about 40 minutes long, and is an animated reenactment of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The film is titled Momotaro's Sea Eagle. Very bizarre from the perspective of a Westerner's eyes looking back from a vantage point 75 years in the future. This looks nothing like "anime" as people today would recognize it, but is more like a strange Japanese cousin to the Fleischer Bros. Studio cartoons of the 1930s. Momotaro was a popular boy hero character in Japan at the time, and in this film he's the commander of an aircraft carrier, with troops of cute cartoon puppies, kitties, bunnies, monkeys, foxes, and woodpeckers as the crew of his ship and planes. He assembles his troops and tells them of their mission - a surprise air raid to destroy the enemy base on Demon Island. We see the cute animal troops standing to attention in neat military ranks, and know they're ready for business because they're decked out in black boots and black gauntlets, wearing broad leather belts and either military caps or headbands with the Japanese flag (solid circle on a plain white background) or the Imperial Army flag of the Rising Sun (yellow sun radiating lines over a red background) on them. They climb into their fighters (relatively realistically-drawn Zeros), bombers, and torpedo planes and launch from the deck of the carrier. As they begin to approach Demon Island, we hear the musical strains of "Aloha Oe" growing louder (and realize that "Demon Island" is actually Hawaii). The total destruction of the animal air squadron's bombing attack is realistically portrayed as we see floating bits of debris in the harbor, with burning ships off in the distance, backlighting the nighttime devastation, as they slowly sink into the sea. During the actual attack we only see one representative of "the enemy", running around in panic, as he comically, and futilely, tries to flee to safety -- who just happens to look and sound exactly like Bluto from the Popeye cartoons. After some harrowing experiences being shot down, or having mechanical failures with their planes, the victorious air squadron all manage to return safely to the carrier (a few final stragglers, with the help of a giant sea eagle of the title) to report to Captain Momotaro of their glorious victory in the assigned mission, and all celebrate the end of the threat of Demon Island. Banzai!!

And before that it was "colored", and that was considered a polite word by both races. It's also why the NAACP stood for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

I watched Riverdale. It was awesome. They really made Cheryl a Bitch. I didn't think Polly Cooper would even know Jason Blossom. Polly supposed be the older Sister. Then they wind up dating. I thought Jason had a crush on Betty. And Veronica's mom looks nothing like Veronica's mother in the comics. And it seems like Mr. Lodge is a criminal for stealing money. So that's why the family had to move to Riverdale.

I thought of some other things. Betty's mom is also a bitch. The first thing she says she's glad Jason Blossomis dead but later we learn that Polly dated Jason & he was mean to Polly. I guess that's why she hated Jason. And I do like Jughead's narrating th e show but he was hardly in it. Only a few minutes at the end.And it seemed like Jughead & Archie hardly knew each other. They didn't even sit with each other in the gym.

Unless you're a lot older than I think you are, you're talking about the 1988 revival of Gumby (thank Eddie Murphy and his SNL skit "I'm Gumby, dammit!"). The original Gumby aired on NBC in 1956-57, and then in syndication from 1962-68 (for a total of 130 episodes). 99 new episodes were made for The Gumby Adventures in 1988.

I think they showed reruns in the 90s or maybe I was watching the 80s episodes.

Yes, the 99 episodes first aired in 1988 continued to be rerun into the early 1990s (and possibly the original 130 episodes, as well). There were some Gumby comic books, and even a movie, around the same time.

I think he gave in because his heart is in his music.  I was actually surprised he didn't quit the team!  But maybe if him and Valerie start falling in love, he will quit the team and do music full time.

I've just finished getting caught up on Sherlock - 4 seasons and a special episode over the course of a week. I didn't like the fourth season quite as much as the first three, but it was still good. I wonder if they will ever be able to make a fifth season, even though the principals are under contract for one.

The special episode where most of it took place i the 19th Century was very cool.

I watched the first season of American Gods over the last few days.  It's a pretty good start to the adaptation of Neil Gaiman's classic novel.

Now I've started watching Orphan Black season 3 which I somehow missed.

Last week I caught up on the last couple of X-Men movies (Days of Future Past and Apocalypse) that I hadn't seen on video, and re-watched Deadpool (it might be my favorite movie based on a Marvel or DC superhero comic, excepting maybe Watchmen and V for Vendetta). Then I watched the two Ghost Rider movies (the first isn't too bad, the second was terrible).

Yesterday I watched Rise of the Planet of the Apes (for the first time since I saw it in the theater). Today I'll be reading the comic book prequel miniseries to Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and watching the movie (which I also saw in the theater when it came out). Just wanted to refresh my memory of the first two films because I plan on seeing War for the Planet of the Apes sometime in the next few days. This is probably my favorite movie franchise reboot, in many ways superior to the original film series (of which I am a fan as well).

I watched a number of movies over the weekend:

John Wick Chapter 2 - Not nearly as good as the first one.  It seemed like one continuous gun battle.

Ghost in the Shell - Kind of dull.  It could have been a lot better.  I didn't think it was horrible, though.

Hit & Run - Dumb, but entertaining.

Smurfs: The Lost Village - I liked this one, probably even more than the live action films.

Keanu - Dumb, but entertaining.

CHiPS - It  got better as it went along and was kind of crude.  I liked the original tv series a lot more.

Batman and Harley Quinn (2017) - It's a story written by Bruce Timm, in a return to the style of animation of Batman in the 1990s, and seems to be set right after the last season of The New Batman Adventures (1997-99). I think it was done as a celebration of the 25th Anniversary of Batman: The Animated Series (1992), which was also the first appearance of Harleen Quinzel a.k.a. Harley Quinn. This one is rated PG-13 (LSV), and has Harley trying to reform, but Batman (Kevin Conroy) and Nightwing (Loren Lester) need her help to stop the team of Poison Ivy and Jason Woodrue (a.k.a. the Floronic Man) from trying to recreate the Bio-Restorative Formula of Dr. Alec Holland (who became the Swamp Thing after a lab explosion doused him in the formula). In the original Batman animated series, Harley was voiced by Arleen Sorkin, but here she's voiced by Melissa Rauch (better known as Bernadette on The Big Bang Theory), who I think does a good job once I got over my initial disappointment that they didn't use Arleen (Arleen=Harleen, the character was named after the actress) as the voice of Harley. I used to love the DC animated DTV feature films, but in the last 5 years they've gotten pretty lousy, so I didn't know if this one would be any good. I took a chance because of Bruce Timm's involvement and because it looked like a throwback to the older-style features. I'm glad I did because it was great! There's a few PG-13 eyebrow-raising moments involving Harley and Nightwing, and a few big laughs as well as the usual adventure stuff. There's a scene where Nightwing discovers, completely by happenstance, that Harley is now working incognito as a waitress in a restaurant/bar called "Superbabes" (like "Hooters" if it were superheroine/supervillainess-themed) cosplaying herself, and there's another scene where Harley takes Batman & Nightwing to a dive bar/nightclub patronized exclusively by criminal henchmen in order to obtain information to track down Poison Ivy, and in exchange for the info she has to agree to perform on stage (she sings her rendition of Blondie's "Don't Leave Me Hanging on the Telephone", which is pretty good!) > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_4Czc_VxYI (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_4Czc_VxYI)

Harley is really the star here, and she gets more character development than she did in the entire original series. I think it made me really understand her character a lot better, and even feel some empathy for her. Harleen Quinzel is smart and funny, but her acting out her hostility towards society is strictly a function of frustration endemic to her blue-collar roots, which is only really made obvious in this film, not in her prior appearances in Batman animated episodes. The way she talks and various clues to her upbringing that she drops make that clear, and as a result she's the exact antithesis of the typical "classy" femme fatale villainess. At one point she makes Batman stop the Batmobile, then leaps out and chases and starts beating up on a guy that she spotted, who once dated and then dumped her, yelling at him "You made my mother cry!". In this movie, Harley really is sincere in trying to reform, and helping stop Ivy's crazy plan to turn everyone in the world into plant-creatures, but she's angry because of the lack of trust or respect she's getting from Batman & Nightwing in return for her efforts, and you start to get the point that that's really her whole life-story. She made bad choices in her life because she was acting out of frustration and didn't feel like she was getting any respect or recognition. Towards the end, when the situation is looking at its worst, it's down to Harley to stop her BFF Ivy from using the replicated Bio-Restorative Formula to transform every human and animal on the planet into plant-creatures, and there's what I'd call a real "Betty & Veronica moment" between the two of them. At the very conclusion, when Batman & Nightwing have exhausted all of their high-tech armament in attempting to stop the powerful Floronic Man, Harley suggests the most simple and should-have-been-obvious solution that never occurred to them.

I see online where the movie got a lot of negative reactions from people who didn't like the fact that Harley wasn't voiced by original cast member Arleen Sorkin, and couldn't abide any "comical" humor in a Batman movie, while some claimed that the plot was weak. I felt like it was a nice expansion on the previously-existing character of Harley, and Melissa Rauch did a decent job of bringing her own qualities to Harley's voice. Humorless sticks-up-their-butts reviewers leveled charges of "juvenile humor", but that only indicates to me that they failed to understand the characterization of Harley Quinn. The humor present here is completely appropriate to that character, and doesn't "make fun of" Batman in any way, nor did I have any problem following the plot of the story, which made complete sense to me.

Scooby-Doo! and KISS: Rock and Roll Mystery (2015) - I liked it, but some things about it were kind of bizarre. KISS looks a little different in some of the different animated sequences as (I guess) animated by different groups of animators. There's yet another different backstory (I've seen several different inconsistent ones in various KISS comic book appearances) explaining KISS's connection to some cosmic dimension that effectively allows them to turn into superheroes at times. Gene (Demon) Simmons is funny as "the grumpy one" of the group. The strangest aspect of the movie by far is how Paul (Starchild) Stanley -- who was 62 at the time he voiced himself as a character in this cartoon -- is hitting on Daphne Blake (who has a starstruck fangirl crush on him -- and [I think] is still supposed to be a teenager), and at the end of it he gives her a big **SMERP!!**<3 <3. Well, we all know about rockstars and groupies (and presumably KISS had creative approval of the storyline of the film by contract) but I guess we're not supposed to think about the real KISS as a band (although in the movie, they play themselves as a band) but as a fictional band in a cartoon where they're also able to transform into science-fantasy superheroes. But still, it seems a little creepy/weird...

Other than that, it's sort of a traditional Scooby-Doo mystery plot (the gang has to help KISS stop The Crimson Witch from haunting their amusement park, KISS World) apart from the fact that the science-fantasy/cosmic dimension aspects can't be explained away (although Velma does so anyway, because that's her schtick). There's some varying quality of different animated sequences (from excellent to average), and when the Crimson Witch gets ahold of the Black Diamond and uses it to summon "The Destroyer", he's like a Jack Kirby-esque floating head that's kind of an amalgamation of Galactus/Darkseid/Modok. I haven't watched a lot of the Scooby-Doo DTV features, but I kind of liked this one.

SPOILER ALERT!

I just watched Batman and Harley Quinn, and it looked exactly like the original Batman Adventures, but something was...off about it. It was light-hearted in spots, almost over the top in that category, such as tapping the mid-60's Batman TV series. Heck, it was flat-out weird. What were the writers aiming for, I wonder? I anticipated Swamp Thing coming on the scene, and he did by rising out of the swamp water, but his merely giving a speech, then vanishing back into the water? Seriously? Huh?  ??? Missing something, here....

Well, no... NOT seriously. People who had problems with the writers putting a few funny scenes into the movie are probably taking it far TOO seriously to allow the cartoon team to have any FUN. There's nothing in here that's mocking the characters, and it's exactly the sort of humor that's characteristic of Harley. Relax and just roll with it. Geez, somehow people can accept the idea of a nightclub/bar where ALL the criminal henchmen (and women) gather to party... but throw in a scene where one of Catwoman's henches tries to razz Batman by doing the batusi (and gets dropped by a quick & casual suckerpunch from Batman for his trouble), and all of a sudden, THEN it becomes too unreal to deal with. Yeah, because all the rest of the things that appear in a DC cartoon are so realistic and believable.

And yeah, the expectation that Swampy was going to put in an appearance was there the minute they mentioned Alec Holland. That being the case, we'd have been disappointed if he didn't -- and also if he just showed up at the end to provide the big deus ex machina ending (that probably should be "deus ex flora", for "God out of the plants"...) -- which would just leave us wondering why he didn't just do that in the first place, and save Batman & Harley all the trouble. Swamp Thing was always aware of what Ivy and Woodrue were doing from the very beginning, because they're all connected to The Green, except that Ivy & Woodrue have no conscious awareness of it, until they eat those mind-altering yams that sprouted out of Swamp Thing's body (which is a type of Holy Communion with the Savior of the Green).  Having Swamp Thing just wave his hand to make the problem go away (by turning Woodrue into a stump, like Harley suggests) would have been a cheat -- WAY too easy a resolution. If it's not down to Batman & Harley to solve the problem, then they probably should have just made a Swamp Thing movie (which I'm sure, for commercial reasons, would have been entitled BATMAN & SWAMP THING anyway).

It's a damn sight better of a movie than all of the crappy DC Universe films (13 by my count) that they've put out in the last five years. The last decent ones were Justice League: Doom and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns in 2012.

The list above is in their original order of release. I've rated them all from 1 to 5 stars, depending on how much I liked them.

You should definitely watch the first of each series (in red), as those are both the shortest of both series (at 23 minutes), and they are definitely designed as "introductory" features that introduce the main characters and basic premises of the series.

Other things you should know:
The Monster High features all focus on some different theme, and each features a slightly different cast that they focus on. Generally speaking, one or two characters tend to take the lead parts, with some new character(s) also being introduced in that feature. The first two MH features, and all of the Ever After High features, are traditional-style flat (2D) animation, while the MH features from Why Do Ghouls Fall in Love? on are all CGI animation. The characters tend to look a little different in one style to the other, and the same is true of both their appearance as dolls and the packaging art. I have a definite preference for the 2D animated characters' look.

You might want to check out Mattel's YouTube channel to sample either of the short webisodes (about 3 minutes long, +/-). Just search for Monster High Volume 1 or Ever After High Volume 1. The first couple of Ever After High specials are compiled from shorter webisodes making up a continued story arc, so you can sample those for free.

Boo York, Boo York is a musical and a love story. Out of all the CGI-animated MH features, it tends to work the best, because the music keeps the story moving along at a good pace.

MIRACULOUS: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir (Season 1, 26 episodes) - What a great show. It's one of the most unusual spins on a superhero series I've ever seen (and I've seen a lot of them). A pretty girlie take on a superhero, because it's cartoony, and a high school rom-com, or maybe that should be "magical girl" + "henshin hero" instead of superheroes... or maybe it doesn't matter since the series is set in the city of Paris. Ordinary (or is she?) Parisian 15 year-old Marinette Dupin-Cheng is chosen to be the wearer of the miraculous, which grants her the magical powers of Ladybug (no sillier than being bitten by a radioactive spider, I guess). She's goofy, clumsy and tongue-tied whenever she's in the presence of her schoolgirl crush, Adrien Agreste, son of a famous and wealthy fashion designer (and himself a teenage male model)... who is also secretly her crimefighting partner, Cat Noir, unbeknownst to her. And Cat Noir has a mad crush on Ladybug, but of course, he doesn't know she's really Marinette either. There are some strong hints that the master villain of the series, Hawkmoth, may be Adrien's father (and neither hero knows that either... but does Hawkmoth know who they are?). Hawkmoth never confronts them personally, but remains safe within his secret lair until whenever he senses dark emotions of frustration, anger, and hurt and in people, and he absorbs and transforms those emotions into a dark force (because he too is the possessor of a miraculous) which allows him to imbue an ordinary white butterfly with evil power, changing it into a black "akuma" and sending it out to "evilize" a normal person in emotional turmoil (by bonding with some object in that person's possession, transforming them along with its power into a proxy supervillain) that Hawkmoth promises the power to gain revenge to, in exchange for them agreeing to bring back to him Ladybug and Cat Noir's miraculouses, their magical power objects that are said to represent the powers of creation and destruction, and together are said to be the most powerful of several known miraculouses, that have been in existence for thousands of years, and have been passed down worldwide over the centuries to different chosen ones in many different times and countries. When transformed, the heroes gain both the usual enhanced speed, strength, stamina, agility and durability, and also a signature weapon (Ladybug = magical compact/yo-yo; Cat Noir = magical battle staff)  and a special "finishing move" power. Cat Noir's is "Catastrophe!", an ability to summon dark force into the palm of his hand to disintegrate any solid object (one-time only), and Ladybug's is "Lucky Charm!", a randomly-changed object that comes with no instructions ("What am I supposed to do with this?"), but which also includes Ladybug-vision (she sees red-and-black-spotted objects when she looks all around her that clue her into what she needs to combine the seemingly-ordinary Lucky Charm with to win the day and defeat the villain). Ladybug never knows what to expect when she shouts "Lucky Charm!" -- some of the Lucky Charms have been: a spray-paint can, bath towel, Ladybug costume, another yo-yo, a cardboard box, a spoon (all of them red, with black polka-dots). After they've chosen to use their special power, they have only 5 minutes remaining before they'll transform back to their normal selves. There's a rhythm to the ritualized repetition of certain tropes and expected actions, so that you actually look forward to seeing them in each episode. So well thought-out, funny, action-packed, and having some real emotional truth at its core. Usually I'm not a big fan of CGI-style toons, but in this one the characters are so well-designed, and their body language and facial expressions rendered with a lot of care. They're well-animated and can be graceful or goofy in their movements, according to what the situation calls for. I love it.

ARCHIE'S WEIRD MYSTERIES - Watched 12 episodes (out of 40 total) of this show, and it's the first time I've really seen it.

THE BAD: The character designs, the animation, the voice acting, and the horrible opening theme song. I might have rated it as typical of its time had it been made in 1989 as opposed to 1999, and even though I've owned this DVD set for years now, this is the first time I've been able to force myself to watch through an entire episode. In addition to that, there's a little over 4 hours of video (10 episodes + 1 "bonus" Sabrina episode) squeezed onto each of the 4 discs in this set, so the poor video quality due to compression doesn't help. It's no real surprise that this show wound up being dumped onto the Fox Family channel, since I'm sure none of the networks or major basic cable channels wanted to touch it with a 10-foot pole. It's pretty embarrassing by turn-of-the-millennium animated series standards.

THE GOOD: Once I managed to get past all of the above and force myself through watching a few episodes, I noticed that (given the basic atypically-Archie Comics premise) the writing is actually not half-bad, certainly far better than most previous Archie Comics cartoon adaptations. The single exception would probably be the original Hanna-Barbera JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS season, but who knows, if the animation and voice acting here were better, maybe it would be up to that standard. The best thing that can be said about it is that the writers obviously bothered to actually read some Archie comics, so that the characters at least somewhat resemble the personalities that readers of the comics are familiar with. The quality of the individual episodes' plots vary somewhat, but the better ones (such as the few that focus on Veronica as a main character) actually manage to get the characters' dynamics right. In fact, I'd say a fair number of the episodes were better plotted and written than many of the issues of the comic book series spawned from the show, and on average it's no more badly-plotted or written than something like ARCHIE'S EXPLORERS OF THE UNKNOWN or JUGHEAD'S TIME POLICE, to mention a couple of "atypical" Archie series which it might be comparable to. I guess we could still wish for a show that was closer to a mainstream classic Archie series, but for what it is, it's okay. I just wish the acting was a little less hokey-sounding and that they had bothered to model the characters more closely on their comic book appearance.

Oh, and if I recall correctly, I think I spent about $8 (new/sealed) for the set, so I guess I can say that I about got my money's worth at least.

Daredevil on Netflix. I'm about to see the season finale of season two. If you like superhero TV shows, you MUST watch this. Rarely is it done right from the comic book (Why call it that? There's nothing comical about many of them), but the writers have it spot on for Daredevil here, I think. Two things if you haven't seen it: 1) Start at season one so you won't get confused, and 2) be warned: this is a VERY violent series. The choreographed fight scenes are the best other than Arrow. Vincent D'Onofrio (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vincent_D%27Onofrio) IS the Kingpin, just as Charlie Cox (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlie_Cox) is Daredevil....

Finished watching the rest of ARCHIE'S WEIRD MYSTERIES. Towards the end of the series there are a couple of 3-episode story arcs, one with Veronica getting a sunstone pendant and thinking that she's The Ender, destined to save the world by preventing the Eternal Night of the Vampires. This introduced a character named Scarlet Hellsing, who also appeared in some issues of the comic book series based on the animated series. The other 3-episode arc involves a time-travelling villain named Vinnie Wells, who steals a time-device invented by Dilton (don't ask how, but Vinnie's whole motivation stems from a desire to mooch money to buy nachos). The final episode of the 3 also features a time-travelling adult Archie Andrews, and a wilderness scout (in the year 1699) named Bob Montana who found (and thus founded) Riverdale (with some help from time-travelling Archie), as well as an homage to the very first Archie story where a 12 year-old Archie tries to show off by balancing on top of his bicycle seat, and meets Betty for the first time. Without a doubt, this was the best-written episode of the entire series. I almost expected Marshal January McAndrews of the Time Police to show up to help put an end to Vinnie's chrono-meddling. It very much felt like a plot from Jughead's Time Police, mixed with a little of the multiverse stuff from Life With Archie magazine.

Since then I've been going back and forth (one disc at a time) between the original SABRINA THE TEEN-AGE WITCH (1969, Filmation) and THE GROOVIE GOOLIES, which was an additional half-hour program created to expand Sabrina's show into an hour-long block when it spun off from THE ARCHIE COMEDY HOUR where it first appeared, in the same way that The Archie Comedy Hour was an expansion of the earlier half-hour THE ARCHIE SHOW (1968). On DVD, the shows were released at different times by different companies, each as a 3-disc set (16 half-hour episodes per series). As with the Archie cartoons appearing on The Archie Comedy Hour, SABRINA AND THE GROOVIE GOOLIES re-ran the earlier Sabrina animated episodes from The Archie Comedy Hour, while adding the new Groovie Goolies cartoon episodes (in which Sabrina also appears, but as a distinctly minor supporting character). The weird thing is, although the Goolies were an original creation of the Filmation Studios writers and animators, the copyright is still in the name of Archie Comic Publications (1970), which makes it odd to me that ACP never ever used the characters (not even once) in their comics. For some reason, Filmation felt that it was necessary to hyphenate the word "teen-age" in the title of Sabrina's cartoon, as opposed to the more common spelling "teenage". One of the songs from the Groovie Goolies was "Chick-A-Boom" which was later re-recorded by Dick Monda, who did the songs for the entire series, under the pseudonym "Daddy Dewdrop" and became a big hit (although now mostly forgotten, as are most one-hit wonders).

I MARRIED A WITCH (United Artists, 1942) - Jennifer (Veronica Lake) and her father Daniel (Cecil Kellaway) are two witches burned at the stake in colonial Salem in 1652. Before dying, Jennifer curses Puritan Jonathan Wooley and all his male descendants (all played by Fredric March) to be unlucky in love and have unhappy marriages. The two witches' spirits (in the form of mist) are bound in the roots of old tree until 1942, when lightning splits the tree, releasing them, and they seek revenge on the current Wooley descendant, Walter Wooley, who is about to be married on the day before the election in which he's running for governor of the state. In their mist form, the two witches seek out Wooley. As incorporeal spirits, their powers include possessing the bodies of the recently deceased and reanimating them, by letting their mist form flow into the bodies. Daniel causes a fire at the Pilgrim Hotel, and Walter Wooley, driving past, stops to help firemen evaculate the hotel's residents -- one of whom is a young girl who died of smoke inhalation, and whose body is then possessed by the mist form of the the witch Jennifer, whom Walter then rescues from the hotel fire. Jennifer's plan is to seduce Walter, ruin his wedding, and his hopes of winning the election. After several failed attempts at seducing him, her father decides to help by concocting a love potion to insure Walter's downfall. Unfortunately, a painting of one of the Wooley ancestors falls from the wall, hitting Jennifer on the head and knocking her unconscious just as she tries unsuccessfully to persuade Walter to drink the potion. In trying to revive her, Walter picks up the potion (he thinks it's only water) and gives it to Jennifer to drink, causing her to fall hopelessly in love with the first man she sees -- Walter. She and her father do manage to disrupt his wedding by causing a public scandal -- Wooley's bride-to-be walks out on him, and the scandal destroys his reputation and hopes of winning the election. He's so reviled by the public that he's forced to flee the state with Jennifer in tow, but by now Walter has fallen in love with her, and after crossing the state line they elope to a justice of the peace and are married. She then uses her witchcraft to repair his reputation, causing him to win the state governor's election by unanimous vote (ballots showing votes for the opposing candidate are even shown to be magically altered so that the vote is changed to Wooley). Daniel still wants to destroy Wooley because of his ancestor's accusation of being a witch that resulted in their trial and conviction as witches and their burning at the stake. But Daniel, now in corporeal form, having possessed the body of a middle-aged mortal, has a weakness for strong drink, and when he gets drunk he forgets how to correctly recite his hexes, spells and incantations -- leaving him powerless until he sobers up. Jennifer does what she can to thwart a number of his attempts to ruin Walter, but eventually Daniel returns. A confrontation between father and daughter over her true allegiance results in Daniel renouncing her as a witch and removing Jennifer's supernatural power, rendering her a mere mortal, but she manages to escape his wrath. While attempting to escape from a crowd of boisterous supporters who've mobbed his house and are celebrating his winning of the state election, Wooley & Jennifer exit through the back door and he hails a neighborhood cab, whose driver he knows, and instructs the cabbie to speed away from the mob quickly... but the driver's place has been taken by Daniel, and he continues to speed up until the cab becomes airborne. He crashes the cab, killing himself and Jennifer in the process, but not before she throws Walter from the cab, saving his life. The witches return to their mist form, and Daniel forces Jennifer to recant her love and loyalty to Wooley. When she does, he restores her powers as a witch, but forces her to watch with him as Walter suffers in the aftermath of Jennifer's apparent death -- but it seems her former body was not damaged in the wreck of the taxi after all, and she returns to it in mist form to inhabit it again, just in time to catch Daniel unawares, his mist form residing in an open liquor bottle which he couldn't resist sampling. Hastily corking the bottle, Jennifer and Walter have a joyful reunion. Flash-forward some years, and the couple are married with children, including a pretty little girl also named Jennifer, happily romping about the house on a broomstick.

There are several ideas established about witches in this film that influenced and are carried forward in subsequent modern fictional depicitons (including Sabrina, the Teenage Witch).
1. Witches, although apparently having mortal ancestors in the distant past, are now a separate race of beings.
2. Witches are dedicated to using their supernatural powers to cause misfortune and misery for ordinary mortals. Failure to do so reflects badly upon a witch and can result in penalties.
3. Witches are forbidden to fall in love -- the penalty for doing so is renouncement by their race and condemnation to a life without powers as a mere mortal.
4. Witches cannot cry, unless they've lost their powers and have made mortal. (In some later depictions, tears signify their automatic loss of supernatural powers.)

One idea of the film that doesn't seem to be carried forward in later fictional depictions of witches is that a witch's true spirit form is that of a mist, which can't be destroyed, only contained, and that in their spirit form they have to power to take possession of recently-deceased mortal bodies, if not badly damaged.

The basic plot of the film (a witch returns from her burning at the stake several hundred years ago to seek revenge on the descendant of the man who condemned her) is identical to the plot of the 1960 Italian horror classic BLACK SUNDAY, directed by Mario Bava and starring Barbara Steele.

Next I'll be reviewing BELL, BOOK, AND CANDLE, a 1958 Columbia Pictures film about love and witchcraft starring Kim Novak and Jimmy Stewart.

KONG: Skull Island - Not exactly a remake, or a sequel either, but somehow this ties into Legendary Pictures' other kaiju movies like Godzilla and Pacific Rim. Teaser at the end for an upcoming Godzilla sequel (which also involves Rodan, Mothra and Ghidorah); presumably it's the Kong vs. Godzilla (or was it the other way around) re-imagining that is planned.

I guess I liked it all right, but at the same time felt strangely detached about it on any emotional level.

I just watched Riverdale. And I think Betty's Brother may be The Black Hood only because Archie said to The Guy from The FBI that feels that he really feels that Black Hood is still out there. And at the end of tonight's espoide Chic enters Betty's room & he looks really creepy like he is going do something bad. And why did Betty grab the the black hood out of the fire in the espoide that was on before this one which was odd?

The SHEENA QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE Collection DVD. This has 2 seasons (25 episodes) from the 2000 syndicated TV series (starring Gena Lee Nolin of Baywatch as Sheena), and the 1984 feature film (starring former Charlie's Angel Tanya Roberts), plus 5 bonus episodes (poor quality) from the little-seen Sheena syndicated TV series from the 1950s (starring Irish McCalla as Sheena).

I was surprised to see nudity in the 1984 feature film (which I'd amazingly never seen before), since it clearly says it's rated PG. I guess maybe they can get away with brief nudity as long as it doesn't involve "sexually suggestive" situations? For the most part it's handled tastefully (and in one scene, comically). Ironically, the 2000 syndicated series has a Sheena who's showing less skin than her 1950s counterpart (Irish McCalla wore what amounted to a jungle minidress) -- here Gena Lee Nolin is more covered-up than she was on Baywatch. I'd put the 1950s series (which I'd seen before) on a par with the George Reeves SUPERMAN or the Clayton Moore LONE RANGER TV shows from the same decade... too bad there don't seem to be any existing decent-quality copies of the episodes.

It's okay for the $12 I paid for it, though.

GALAXY EXPRESS 999 (1979)
ADIEU, GALAXY EXPRESS 999 (1981)
GALAXY EXPRESS: ETERNAL FANTASY (1996)
MAETEL LEGEND (2001)
QUEEN EMERALDAS (1988)
VENGEANCE OF THE SPACE PIRATE (a 1985 English-dubbed edit of the 1982 original anime film Arcadia of My Youth)
CAPTAIN HARLOCK and Friends (1985 English-dubbed version of selected episodes from the 1978 anime TV series Space Pirate Captain Harlock)
STARZINGER: The Movie Collection (selected episodes of the 1978-79 anime TV series, dubbed and edited in 2009 into three 1 hour & 50 minute feature films)

All of the above anime were based on the work of manga creator Leiji Matsumoto (best known in the US as the creator of Space Battleship Yamato, dubbed and edited and broadcast on US television as Star Blazers in the 1980s). Apart from series he created like Yamato, Starzinger, and Danguard Ace (a popular super-robot anime series of the 1970s), many of the other manga and anime series share a common continuity and characters, coexisting in a "Leijiverse". The primary series involved in this shared continuity are Captain Harlock, Galaxy Express 999, Queen Millennia, and Galaxy Railways. Galaxy Express 999 is a 19th-century styled space locomotive that travels across space, stopping at various planets. It's endpoints are Earth and the planet LaMetal in the Andromeda galaxy, ruled by Queen Andromeda Promethium, otherwise known as Queen Millennia, the "Queen of a Thousand Years". Planet LaMetal is the seat of the Machine Empire, which seeks to dominate the universe, conquering or converting all other sentient races into mechanoids like themselves. Queen Promethium is also the mother of Maetel (one of the main characters of Galaxy Express 999) and Emeraldas (like Captain Harlock, a space pirate, and a primary supporting character in both that series and GE999). How a mechanoid queen like Promethium can be the mother of Maetel and Emeraldas is explained in Maetel Legend. Queen Promethium's backstory was the subject of the TV series Queen Millennia, untranslated into English except as part of the edited-&-dubbed by Carl Macek version Captain Harlock and the Queen of a Thousand Years, seen ever-so-briefly in the US in 1985-86. Continuity as such is a little loose as such in the Leijiverse, as the original Space Pirate Captain Harlock series (1977-78) was not originally conceived as part of a shared universe, and only later, with the feature films Galaxy Express 999 (1979, a condensed retelling of the major plot arc of an earlier-aired TV series) and My Youth in Arcadia (1982, essentially what amounts to Harlock's origin story) were connections forged. Many of the earlier or later anime contain discrepancies or contradictions of events which can't be accounted for, and some need to be eliminated as existing in the shared universe altogther, like Harlock Saga (1996), an OVA series which recast the main characters of Captain Harlock in the roles of characters from operatic cycle The Ring of the Nibelung. Other series in which Harlock and his best friend Tochiro Oyama appear, take place in other times, like Gun Frontier, a 2002 OVA series (the manga on which it is based actually preceded the Space Pirate Captain Harlock manga) in which Harlock and Tochiro have analogs in their ancestors who are destined to share a common history and genetic memory (this plot point was explained in the film My Youth in Arcadia, which showed that Harlock and Tochiro also had ancestors who shared history during WWII). In fact it appears that in a sense, all of Harlock and Tochiro's descendants are genetically-identical reincarnations of their former ancestors. Yes, it's more than a little confusing, so I've been sifting through the various films, OVAs and TV series related and trying determine if they can be made to fit within the shared continuity, and if so, in what order events take place relative to other stories. There are a number of tangential spinoffs as well, like the OVA series COSMO WARRIOR ZERO.

STARZINGER was fun, but is otherwise unrelated to Leiji Matsumoto's shared universe. The series' title remained unexplained in the English-language dub. In 1980, the series had 26 of its 73 episodes translated into English by Jim Terry's American Way Productions, retitled as Spaceketeers, one of five different anime series broadcast as part of a 5-days-a-week syndicated package under the overall title FORCE FIVE. That series only aired for a few years in 4 or 5 select broadcast markets in the US, and a couple more in Canada. Starzinger's original story is a loosely-based space-opera iteration of the ancient Chinese Buddhist classic, Journey To The West. It's full title in Japan translates roughly as Science-Fiction West STARZINGER. The 1980 version tried to recast the three cyborg heroes of the series as science-fiction analogs of Alexandre Dumas' The Three Musketeers, since Journey to the West remains a largely unfamiliar story to English-speaking audiences. Spaceketeers was the only one out of FORCE FIVE's English-dubbed anime adaptations not to feature a giant super-robot as the main character. Jim Terry's original plans to obtain rights to Go Nagai's Great Mazinger anime collapsed when negotiations stalled out, and so a dubbed adaptation of Leiji Matsumoto's Starzinger became an eleventh-hour substitute. The initial impetus for the American syndication packaging came from Mattel's then-popular toy line Shogun Warriors, which imported various unrelated Japanese super-robot toys in different scales (the most impressive of which were gigantic 26" plastic versions) with English-language repackaging, this being several years prior to Hasbro's similar imported Japanese robot toys which were dubbed TRANSFORMERS; however, Mattel's Shogun Warriors super-robot toys didn't have the feature which allowed a seemingly-innocuous vehicle like a car or plane to be converted into a giant robot. The initial success of Mattel's Shogun Warriors toy line turned out to be short-lived, as within a couple of years a number of complaints from concerned parents, over the toys' small parts like projectile missiles presenting a choking hazard to small children, eventually put an end to the line.

The version of Starzinger I have here on DVD was newly redubbed in 2009, and tries to condense three of the more important story arcs of related episodes into three movies which each tell somewhat-complete stories, but are still part of an overall trilogy.  The main premise of the series involved the quest of three cyborg guardians to deliver the beautiful telempathic Princess Aurora to the Great Planet at the center of the galaxy. It seems that the Great Planet was formerly the source of all beneficial energy that endowed all the galaxy's living creatures with life and peace, but the former queen of the Great Planet is aging, and the radiations from the Great Planet have been corrupted, resulting in normal alien races becoming delvolved into evil space mutants. Doctor Kitty, a beautiful lady scientist from Earth, discovers that her adopted daughter, the orphaned Princess Aurora, sole survivor of the ruling royal family of the moon, is the pnly person who possesses the proper telempatic gifts to restore the beneficial energy of the Great Planet and is destined to replace the ageing queen and become the new queen of the Great Planet. Dr. Kitty selects the powerful but impulsive and undisciplined cyborg Jan Kudo (based on the Monkey King) to be the Princess' elite warrior, and guide her on her Journey to the West Center of the Galaxy in safety. She informs them that they will also encounter two alien cyborgs as they set out on their mission, who will also swear allegiance to the Princess Aurora, and join Jan Kudo as her protectors. These turn out to be Don Hakka, a short, stout, green-armored cyborg from a muddy planetoid, who is gluttonous and crude-mannered, but nevertheless heroic, and Sir Jogo, a tall, lanky blue-armored cyborg from a watery planetoid with a calm, analytical nature (he often consults a handheld computer to calculate the odds of whether some intended plan of action will lead to success or failure). Together with the red-armored cyborg Jan Kugo who is brash and impulsive and given to acting without thinking, although well-intentioned, their personalities and distinctive weapons and powers make them a well-balanced trio for guarding Aurora, but she often has to caution them that the various foes they encounter were orignally peaceful alien creatures and are not responsible for their actions in their now-mutated state, so they must combat them without using lethal force. The princess' kind and compassionate nature causes all three of her escorts to develop feelings for her, which is sometimes the source of conflict between them. Eventually, the three warriors encounter Bellamiss, a female cyborg warrior whose personality is similar to Jan Kugo's. She's not really evil, but simply a misguided patriot trying to protect her homeworld. She can't see how evil her own Queen Larisse is, because the Queen just happens to closely resemble Bellamiss' poor deceased mother. In a surprising turn for a children's cartoon, Jan Kugo eventually does fall in love with her, even though they've battled each other several times, but Bellamiss sacrifices her own life to avenge the deaths of the last refugees from her destroyed world after they have been killed by a rampaging electromagnetic space creature. Jan Kugo weeps bitter tears over her death. There is a surprising amount of emotional expression and conflicts of personality and internal intrigue among the space mutants for a kids' cartoon. At one point the Princess even threatened to commit suicide rather than be taken prisoner by aliens who sought to drain her of her telempathic powers and use them for their own gain.

One of my all-time favorites, which I'm planning on watching again as soon as I can find the time. I was only a so-so fan of Mamoru Oshii's 1990s film version, but really loved Kenji Kamiyama's SAC television series. For some reason the 2nd season ("2nd Gig") is out-of-print on DVD, and really expensive if you can find the complete collection on DVD (plus you have to avoid the Anchor Bay release, which according to all reviews, looks terrible). Hoping somebody will rectify that situation soon. Not sure why, as the first season is easily get-able at a reasonable price.

Thanks for letting me know. I just finished season 1 of SAC yesterday. I was thinking of ordering 2nd Gig but not if they're that expensive. I guess I'll rewatch the live-action movie (saw it in theaters, haven't watched the Blu-ray yet) and order The Individual Eleven (the compilation movie of 2nd Gig), Solid State Society, the original film, and the sequel on Blu-ray (the Blu-ray of Innocence supposedly contains at least one of the two English dubs made with the SAC cast, probably the American dub).
Then, after that, I'll get the new OVAs or TV specials or whatever they are (I already have The New Movie, which takes place after all of those).

ARISE, which looks like a prequel to SAC but is actually more of a reboot. I want to watch ARISE, but I just hate the way that they're milking it to make the fans pay through the nose. Even though ARISE is only 10 episodes in it's entirety, there's no complete collection. You have to buy what they call "Borders". What is meant by that is that out of the 10 episodes, 2 half-hour episodes put together make up a complete story, which is called "Border 1", "Border 2", etc. for a total of 5 borders. You can buy a "box set" (114 minutes) of ARISE Borders 1 & 2 (or 3 & 4) for about $25 each.

Unfortunately, there's no complete set sold (even though there are only 10 episodes). So be prepared to buy them as "Borders".... Episodes 1 & 2 equals "Border 1", which is a complete story of two half-hour episodes. You can get a box set of either Borders 1 & 2, or Borders 3 & 4, but then you still need to buy Border 5 separately (which is more or less a prequel setting up "The New Movie"). So that's at least 4 individual items (or possibly 6) you have to purchase to get the entire series, and it's going to cost you somewhere in the neighborhood of $80.

I've resisted it on the grounds that they're blatantly bilking the fans who "gotta have it", and am holding out a few years until it appears as one of those S.A.V.E. re-releases or something as a complete set.

Mega Monster Battle: ULTRA GALAXY  - The best superhero movie I've ever seen...

GODZILLA: Planet of the Monsters - Brand new feature-length anime movie. This is a top-quality animated film. They spared no expense. Makes both the recent American (Legendary Pictures) film AND Toho's Shin Godzilla movie (both of which weren't bad) look a little shabby by comparison. This was an ebay purchase (I think it's a Malaysia/Singapore import), but it's both English-subtitled AND English-dubbed, and the dubbing is top-notch, too. I was a little worried about what to expect, since Toho has resisted going the anime route for decades, but the results are very satisfying. There's a sequel anime film to this that I purchased at the same time (haven't watched it as yet).

EDIT:
GODZILLA: City on the Edge of Battle - Sequel to the above. These movies are an interesting blend of CGI and traditional cel animation, with the results (IMO) having the "best of both worlds". It's quite a departure for the Godzilla franchise, in that the premise is that the remnants of humanity (together with the remnants of two friendly humanoid alien races) fled from Earth shortly after the end of the 21st Century in a giant space ark, when the long-running war of humans against daikaiju (giant monsters) had gone so badly that a remaining small group of humans chose to abandon the planet in hopes of finding another world to colonize. Twenty years later, the would-be colonists realized that finding another habitable planet wasn't as easy as they thought, and the recent discovery of some type of warp-drive principle determines them to return to Earth, and try to retake it from Godzilla. Due to the relativistic effects  of warp travel that the space ark people had no control over, when they finally return to Earth 22 years after they left it, they discover that 19,200 years have passed on Earth, and the world has evolved an entirely new ecosystem supporting Godzilla's existence. It's very different from your typical kaiju movie scenario, but analysis of Godzilla himself now reveals why he had been impervious to all prior attacks by even nuclear weapons (G has a biologically-generated force shield, but needs to collapse it in order to generate his atomic breath attack). A plan is evolved to fire an Electro-Magnetic-Pulse harpoon into G's body at the moment when his force shield is down. Triggering the EMP within G's body should set up a chain reaction that will destroy him. It's humanity's only hope of reclaiming their home planet, so the future of everything rests on what they do now. The first film ended on a cliffhanger, and so does the second, which means there should be a third (or maybe more?) in this series. Both movies had a running time of about 88 minutes

The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.

A high school comedy about a sixteen year old with psychic powers. He has pretty much all of them, and he's anything but happy about it. All he wants is to live a normal, boring, ordinary life, but he can't turn off his powers, so it's impossible. For example, he can't enjoy games or sports because he always knows already who's going to win. He can't even enjoy a surprise party, because nothing will ever surprise him. And he'd rather not have to eavesdrop on what everyone's thinking, but it can't be helped. He's pretty annoyed about it too. It doesn't help that he's surrounded by his weird classmates and weird parents' odd behavior. Still, that's his life and he's got to put up with it, so the series deals a lot with his coping mechanisms.

Quite the contrast there between RIVERDALE and SABRINA, which is what I can't get over. The former was all people could talk about here for months and months, both before & after the debut. Nary a peep or mumble about Sabrina, though. Oh, well.

Love is a strong word, so that's got to count for something. I have not watched Riverdale after all this time, nor do I really feel any desire to. On the other hand, even though I don't have Netflix, I would consider watching Sabrina if the opportunity presented itself (like at someone else's house, or if it eventually becomes available on general-release DVD). I am interpreting your last comment as there being something about Riverdale that is annoying or disturbing to you on some level, something which has eventually put you off the show even though you already invested your time in the first two seasons.

Netflix gives you a free month if you sign up as a trial.  Even though I already did that once a couple of years ago, they gave me another free month so if you want to try Sabrina, it wouldn't cost you anything.

As far as Riverdale, I really thought two seasons was enough and I was surprised when it was renewed for a third season.  I'm pretty sure I'll get around to checking out season 3 eventually but I keep reading snippets of reviews from people who liked the first two seasons suggesting that season 3 is not very good.  I don't usually implicitly trust other peoples opinions on such things since I have a high tolerance for cheese (which is why I probably was fine with seasons 1 and 2), but I think I read something about a cult leader or something and I don't know why but that's a bridge too far for me.  Again, I'll probably get bored enough to check it out eventually but I'm good for now.

Also, a co-worker of mine who gave up on Riverdale halfway through season 2 said she was going to watch Sabrina (she's not an Archie Comics fan) and I always enjoy things more when I have someone to debrief with after it's over.  She's not as far along with Sabrina but she's enjoying it.  I finished it this morning and loved the ending, especially because it does have roots in MLJ history.  The penultimate episode (number 9 of 10) really affected me, but folks who watch and enjoy horror would probably find it pretty tame.

If you check it out, I'll look forward to your review!!

This is all very interesting. I'd give your post a double-like if I could. I watch much less television (which no longer really seems like the appropriate description anymore, if you know what I mean) than the average person. Probably because I always have piles and piles of comics (the floppy kind as well as collected editions, and American comics as well as Japanese manga) on my list of things to read every week -- and I've gotten WAY behind in the last few weeks as it is. Still, I try to watch a few things, but at this point it's almost exclusively anime. I have an extensive list of anime series I want to watch (most are versions of manga I've read), and it takes me quite a while to work my way through those.

Like I started watching the anime version of PLANETES (which I had recently read already in total as manga), but found it to be quite different and not as good (so far) in my opinion. I had only gotten about six episodes into that, before I got distracted again and started watching the first 9 episodes of PRISON SCHOOL (which brings me up to the events of Volume 3 of the manga, which is all that I've read so far). Unlike Planetes, Prison School is adapted almost exactly from the manga with no deviations (well, "deviations" are part of the story, but I mean it's a note-for-note adaptation). I guess I'll go back to Planetes again and finish watching the anime, while I find the two manga volumes of Prison School which I couldn't order through Diamond via my LCS (which means I probably have to find them on Amazon). I prefer to read the manga before seeing the anime. Other things on my list of stuff to watch which I've read the manga, but haven't seen the anime adaptation as yet, include ONE-PUNCH MAN, MOB PSYCHO 100 and DEATH NOTE. Then there anime series I'd like to check out that I haven't read the manga of. I've seen a few episodes of the anime for THE DISASTROUS LIFE OF SAIKI K. and really enjoyed those (although I definitely prefer the subtitled ones over the English-dubbed ones) so I'd like to see the rest of that series at some point, as well. The manga doesn't seem to have been made available in English translation, that I could discover. I find I can watch most of this stuff online in some form.

Of course, time spent watching video is time not spent reading, and vice-versa.

I'm encouraged by your enthusiasm for the Netflix SABRINA, and I'm definitely giving some thought to that Netflix free trial. The hardest part is figuring out how to find the time to watch those 10 episodes without falling even further behind in the list of stuff I've bought to read, plus anime related to manga that I like.

I was just checking YouTube, and I can see there's quite a bit of buzz there about the Netflix Sabrina series, so I'll probably start there, since most of the videos are short and of course it's free.

I might need to be a little careful to avoid too many spoilers, so I'll have to think about that a little bit before deciding which YouTube reviews/comments I'll decide to watch.

And I love that both series incorporate a few Easter eggs or references for fans. For example, Sabrina carries a vintage Archie Comics thermos in Episode 1 and a poster of Archie's Madhouse can be seen in Harvey's bedroom in Episode 5 or 6 of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Oh, so the story is set during the 1960s like in the comic book?  8)

I got tired of waiting for Into the Badlands to come back from hiatus, so I went ahead and watched the first 8 episodes from season 3 that have been sitting on my dvr.  They were enjoyable, though maybe not quite as much as the first two seasons.  They do set up an interesting second half of the season.  I also liked the teases as to what happened to cause the breakdown in society.

I also watched the first episode of the new Doctor Who series.  It is only one episode, but I liked Jodie Whittaker as The Doctor.  I plan to watch the next four episodes tomorrow.  It is a short season with only 10 episodes so it will be over in another 5 weeks.

Not yet, but it probably is only a matter of time.  It doesn't matter to me as long as the stories are entertaining and the actor does a good job.

At some point it seems like the Doctor should be a little kid, too.

NUIGULUMAR Z
Gothic Lolita Battle Bear

Quote"Gothic lolita fashion enthusiast Yumeko Ayukawa, nicknamed Dameko, possesses the ability to merge with her talking pink teddy bear Buusuke to form Nuigulumar, a sexy leather-clad superheroine. Using her furry nunchucks, she must battle evil villain Takeshi, his psychic subordinate Kill Billy and a horde of 109 zombies, the highest number of the undead ever seen in a Japanese film.

Not yet available in an English-subtitled version, but desperately to be hoped for. The film stars Rina Takeda, a Japanese actress, singer and black belt in Ryukyu Shōrin-ryū Karate. Wow, were ever so many popular Japanese tropes crammed into a single film? Magical girl. Goth/loli. Martial arts. Tokusatsu hero. Zombies. And something for the furry fans.

Hearts Beat Loud (2018) - Frank Fisher owns a record store that is about to close.  His daughter Sam is about to leave New York to attend college at UCLA.  Frank has been raising his daughter alone since the death of her mother in a cycling accident years earlier.  The two start collaborating on a few songs and Frank wants them to form a band, even though she is leaving soon.  This is a very nice comedy/drama with plenty of good father/daughter moments

URUSEI YATSURA ("Those Obnoxious Aliens") - I've known of the existence of the manga (published by Viz) since it started in the U.S. in 1989, but never really followed it. There was a long gap between the first 8 floppy comic-sized issues of LUM Urusei Yatsura and The Return of Lum (which became the new title) in 1994, at which point the series continued on, collected in 9 TPBs (from 1994-2000). Those TPBs condensed material from only the first 11 (of 34 total) Japanese volumes, skipping some stories. Viz is about to start re-publishing the manga in a newer, more complete English translation beginning in February 2019, which is what prompted me to do a little internet research on this series.

Unknown to me, the entire anime series adapted from the manga (195 episodes plus 6 movies and 12 TV specials and OVAs, originally released from 1981 through 1991 in Japan) had been released earlier on DVD in North America by AnimEgo (a company now since defunct). 150 of those TV episodes, movies or OVAs (in Japanese with English subtitles, exactly as released on DVD by AnimEgo) have been uploaded by someone to YouTube >> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T82cfApNUDk&index=1&list=PLft-ctSdHsae8iJGm0pJDXNRpVQwTu2Ja (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T82cfApNUDk&index=1&list=PLft-ctSdHsae8iJGm0pJDXNRpVQwTu2Ja)

It's a fun series. It concerns a lecherous high school student named Ataru Moroboshi who is randomly selected as Earth's champion by the invading aliens known as Oni (which means a demon or devil in Japanese). Ataru isn't interested in being anyone's champion, but changes his mind when he sees that his opponent is the attractive alien princess Lum -- a horned, green-haired teenage cutie wearing a yellow-and-black-striped bikini and boots. (All the Oni seem to wear some sort of yellow-and-black-striped clothes.) To win for Earth, all Ataru needs to do is succeed in a kind of game of tag, by grabbing Lum's horns within the 10 days of the contest. She can fly though, and immediately and easily eludes him for almost the entire 10-day period. Ataru finally cheats by firing a rubber suction-cup arrow at Lum's bikini top, yanking it away. When she reacts in shock by covering her top with her arms, Ataru pounces upon her and grabs her by her horns. Ataru is relieved because now that Earth is spared from the alien Oni invasion, he'll be a hero and can marry his high school sweetheart Shinobu. Blurting out his happiness, "Now I can get married!", he's heard by Lum and she takes it to be a proposal of marriage to her, and immediately falls in love with Ataru. Now she won't be dissuaded from her pursuit of her "Darling", as she calls him, while Ataru is now in hot water with Shinobu whenever Lum is around (which is always, as she eventually comes to live with him, and enrolls as a student in his school, as well). She also has with her an annoying, mischievous toddler cousin named Ten, and a jealous ex-boyfriend named Rei in hot pursuit -- a guy so handsome that all the girls that see him (including Ataru's mom!) immediately fall for him, even though his manners are atrocious and he turns into some sort of giant tiger-like monster whenever he gets mad.

The series seems to feature a never-ending stream of delightfully-weird happenings to keep things lively. It's Archie-like in the sense that Ataru is kind of a hapless shlub with a roving eye for the ladies (but otherwise not a bad guy), caught in the middle of two girls fighting over him (or getting mad AT him), so it's romantic triangle time.

I finally got around to watching the first episode of Riverdale Season 3 and it was so weird and stupid in so many places that I took a peak at episode recaps for episodes 2-8 and decided I'd had enough.  I deleted all the episodes I had recorded and canceled future recordings.  It will be on Netflix in the future should I change my mind, but I think I'm done with the show.
