    February 16, 2018, 09:50:56 PM
  • DeCarlo Rules: @irishmoxie -- If they are indeed reprinting those early B&V Spectaculars from the Archie Giant Series, I'd agree it's a good choice (although it makes me wonder why they'd bypass the Betty & Veronica Summer Fun issues, which would be even more desirable to have). The early Life With Archie issues are a good choice as well, and I'll be buying both of those collections. Archie at Riverdale High, one of the dullest titles, is more of a puzzling choice. I won't be buying that one.
    February 16, 2018, 05:48:41 AM
  • irishmoxie: I own all of B&V Spectacular and most of the later issues of Life with Archie but I would definitely get these collections as they are easier to read without worrying about tearing the pages of fragile comics. Digital would be even better for me.
    February 15, 2018, 04:27:51 PM
  • irishmoxie: I don't see that classic B&V Vol 1 from the 50s up for pre-order on Amazon anymore. So it looks like they've ditched that idea for now.
    February 15, 2018, 04:26:14 PM
  • irishmoxie: I think their idea was to go with the more "edgy" Classic Archie ie fantasy stories from Life with Archie. I haven't read many of the Archie at Riverdale High books but my impression was that they were the "issue" books focusing on a particular issue pertinent to teens like protesting school lunches or something.
    February 15, 2018, 04:19:01 PM
  • irishmoxie: I suspect they will start the Spectacular collection with the Dan Parent stuff because that is more distinguishable. Older B&V Spectacular stuff is very similar to regular B&V.
    February 15, 2018, 04:17:08 PM
  • rusty: Dark Horse could still have the rights, even if they are not using them.  Archie may be thinking that the Life With Archie and Archie at Riverdale High books wi be more marketable than the older comics.  If so, I would agree with that thinking.  Cosmo is an interesting choice for a collection, but maybe they are hoping to capitalize on the new series or have other plans.
    February 15, 2018, 08:28:49 AM
  • Vegan Jughead: They also have "Cosmo: The Complete Merry Martian" up for pre-order!  How many of these things are in the works? This could be cool, but as DeCarlo Rules says, it's some kind of weird titles they're starting with.
    February 15, 2018, 07:12:42 AM
  • Vegan Jughead: At least these don't say they'll be black and white!  It says they're  "presented in the new higher-end format of Archie Comics Presents".  That sounds promising if they execute it well, and, you know, actually produce and release the books.
    February 15, 2018, 07:11:06 AM
  • DeCarlo Rules: I'm not really sure if the B&V Spectacular collection goes back to include the individual B&V Spec issues from the Archie Giant Series, or starts with #1 of the 1990s series, either.

Picked up Menage a 3 again. It really is Gisele's best comic as far the writing goes. So funny. I love that she's working at a comic book store now and the references to Archie and Japanese manga/pop culture. The only bad thing is the digital version from gumroad takes awhile to arrive in my inbox. :waits impatiently:

That was the Sabrina story right, where another witch tricks Jughead into selling her his metabolism, essentially? Dan Parent has a print he sells of that cover (I think his was the alternate one).

Yes that's the one!  So maybe adding Sabrina to the new Jughead comic isn't as weird as it seems.

Speaking of "weird", I remember thinking when I read that, that having Sabrina guest-star in a Jughead story was sort of a weird way (and it is kind of a weird Jughead story, and for him, that's saying something) to celebrate a 200th issue. It's a great story however, just not the sort of one I'd expect for a 200th issue. Generally with Archie comics that would mean something like the number 200 would be central to the plot of the story (as the number 666 was for the final issue of ARCHIE, and they used it in ARCHIE #400 too, IIRC) or it would be more of a retrospective type story, with a lot of old characters that hadn't been seen in while all showing up in the story, or something along those lines. The Sabrina thing almost seemed a little random, like when they wrote the story, they weren't even thinking about "which" issue it would come out in. Of course I was glad to see her in that story, and nothing like that had ever been done in an issue of JUGHEAD before.

TALES FROM RIVERDALE DIGEST #19, 20, 21, & 22 - I've been reading through a big run of these, and really enjoying them. There's a heck of a lot of variety in this digest, and it's a good kind of variety. Some of the reprints that show up on a continuing basis in this title are: Sabrina the Animated Series (let's get that out of the way first, as I consider it pretty much the ONLY drawback detracting from this digest title -- it's in every single issue, and I skip it every single time -- it looks to me like the digest reprinted the entire run of that series); Cheryl Blossom (most issues); Josie & the Pussycats (some older stories, but mostly Stan G shorts from the 90s); That Wilkin Boy (not too often, as that was a regular feature in every issue of JUGHEAD & FRIENDS DIGEST); Madhouse (a whole bunch of these have Madhouse sections, which is awesome); Archie's Weird Mysteries (only a few of those); plus the usual mix of Betty, Veronica, Betty & Veronica, Archie, and Jughead stories. A few Reggie stories as well. Three of the Veronica stories in these digests featured Veronica as Powerteen, and they made kind of a big deal about it (Powerteen gets her own splash page introducing the section). Even though I'd read 2 of them before, it was good to read those again.

For new stories, there's also an excellent variety of shorts: I've seen Ginger Lopez, Nancy, Chuck, Chuck & Nancy, Dilton, and even an Archie & Frankie (Valdez) story, all of which were new. I think I saw at least one Mr. Weatherbee story and at least one Reggie story, too. A lot of Archie/Archie & the Gang/Jughead stories as well, of course. I'd say about 2/3rds to 3/4ths of these are by Fernando Ruiz (mostly written by him, too) and the rest mostly by Dan Parent, although there are a few by the Kennedy brothers in there as well. New characters were introduced in some (like Wendy Weatherbee in #10, and Raj Patel and his family in #21). Really, there's some great stuff in this digest that I don't see a lot in other digest titles. Generally there seem to be about 2 or 3 new shorts (10 to 12 pagers for the lead story, then one or two 5 or 6 pagers in the back) in every issue.

Oh, and Li'l Jinx. Jinx is pretty much in every one of those, but I really like the way it's reprinted here. Instead of bunching all the Li'l Jinx stories up in one 12 or 15 page section, they're all spread out evenly, and for the most part, it's all 1 or 2 pagers, with rare exceptions. So it's just a brief pause before launching into the next couple of longer stories featuring the other characters. That's the ideal way to read Jinx stories as far as I'm concerned. WHAM-BAM. I get too bored when they clump up too many of these together.

TALES FROM RIVERDALE DIGEST #25, 26, 27 & 28 - #25 had a new 12-page story of Dilton, drawn by Fernando Ruiz, and #26 had a new 11-page story of Reggie, also drawn by Ruiz, but written by George Gladir. All these issues had reprinted Moose stories (not just the one-page gag ones, although those show up randomly in a lot of issues), and I recall one of the earlier issues also had a reprinted Moose story as well. It appears I was mistaken in my earlier post about Sabrina the Animated Series being in every issue, as with #25 it is gone, and replaced by an Archie's Weird Mysteries section (starting with reprints of the 1st issue of that title). #27 has another appearance by Wendy Weatherbee (in another story written & drawn by Ruiz) that tells about her father, Tony Weatherbee, who's Waldo Weatherbee's (almost-)identical twin brother. He has a full head of hair and facial hair, and is into motorcyles, so he opened a motorcycle sales and repair shop. The two brothers had grown apart over the years because of their opposite interests (and Waldo was jealous because his brother never lost his hair like he did), but they reconcile in this story. In a flashback to the brothers' younger years, we get to see a young Geraldine Grundy (sometimes called Gerri) and a young Hirarm Lodge. Geraldine has red hair and Hiram's hair is black, in case you're wondering. By #25, the new 5-6 pagers are gone - only the 11-12 page lead story is new. In addition to AWM, these all have Josie and the Pussycats sections (reprints of Stan G. stories from the '90s). #28 has a new Archie lead story by Ruiz.
