Title: Brown Bag Lunch or School Lunch?
Post by: GingerGal on April 26, 2016, 12:17:51 PM
So Miss Beazley is the cafeteria lady at Riverdale High and other than Jughead it seems most of the students don't like the food much for lunch. Veronica even puked on her outfit on her first day it was so awful. So I am sitting here eating a slice of school lunch pepperoni pizza and it is pretty awful. So my question to everyone is were you a bring your lunch in a sack type or person or did you buy the school lunch? If you bought the school lunch what was your favourite lunch food?

The only thing that I do like that the school serves is the grilled chicken sandwich, but today we were running late so I didn't get to make my own lunch. I usually make my own lunch and just buy a drink.

I was in school a long time ago, but I remember that the day I started junior high (6th grade), I didn't eat the cafeteria food and I'm not sure why I didn't.  In any case, I never went to the cafeteria from then on until I finished high school (well, I quit in 12th grade).  I either brought my lunch or bummed off other people or just didn't eat.  I don't know why I stopped eating the school food, but in retrospect, it probably was a good thing.

I remember we had really good cheese burgers in High School. But we were able to go out for out. We could go all the over to The Square. They had a pizza place & McDonald's. There was near a White Castle near school. We also had a Burger King near by & a 7-11.

When I was in Elementary school my mom would always pack a school lunch for me in a brown bag. It was almost always an egg burrito, orange juice and a fruit, sometimes a sandwich. And she would also give me some money to buy something else; a snack or another juice.
Now, in Mexico there aren't school cafeterias like there are here in the US - at least there weren't any cafeterias at the schools I went to (I am originally from the north of Mexico, somewhere in the state of Chihuahua). I don't know if that has changed now in some schools (maybe some private schools do have cafeterias, but I always went to public schools) what we have is little food stands, sorta like this:

The food stand from my elementary school just sold junk food. Potato chips, Japanese peanuts, Chicharrones, sodas, candy, juice, popsicles...although I think they also sold burritos. We would just buy chicharrones or potato chips and drown them with Valentina Salsa. Mmmm, they were delicious, zero nutritional value, though. I am actually surprised I was so skinny even though I ate all that junk food. Now living in the US and seeing first hand how school cafeterias work here (I used to volunteer at an elementary school) I am shocked. So many good food goes to waste. They give the kids nutritional food and kids most times barely touch their food. So many small milk or chocolate milk cartons unopened and a lot of food that wasn't even touched it all ends up in garbage cans! Seriously, they waste a lot of good food, food that they could give to some shelters or to needy children. It's a shame.
Anyway, I don't even know why I was talking about my elementary school years since this thread is more about high school food, right? In high school I almost never bought anything, maybe a soda once in a while. The high school I went to did have a kind of cafeteria, very small one though and they had hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries, burritos, and snacks.

Do you actually have those lunch boxes?  :o

I wish! I have quite a few of more recent manufacture, after the metal lunchbox became a non-sellable item for general retail consumers, and turned into an "instant collectible" aimed at grabbing the disposable income of adult collectors. Then a lot of new companies got into the manufacture of those things, even Dark Horse Comics and Archie McPhee (no relation, a manufacturer of novelty items). In the old days when those Archie and Sabrina lunchboxes were produced, only a few companies were responsible for the majority of lunchboxes released every year at back-to-school time: Aladdin, Thermos, King Seeley. I only have a couple of the older lunchboxes. Those things are hard to find in good condition, because (as you can probably imagine) kids didn't particularly care about whatever wear they suffered while they were in use. Which of course makes the few that WERE preserved in next-to-new condition VERY pricey, according to the demand for the character.

I don't know if I could get away with taking one of those to my high school without getting laughed at. Maybe if I was a bit younger, but in the 9th grade no. They are awesome though.

I don't think many 9th graders would embrace the concept of "retro-cool", so no. I guess when you're in 9th grade your idea of cool would be more like ordering a pizza for lunch using your phone app, and having it delivered to the school cafeteria, so you can stand up and wave "Hey pizza guy! Over HERE!!" while all your friends look on.

That would be cool. I don't know how the administration would like it or even if they would let the pizza delivery person on the campus to deliver the pizza. After 8 a.m. everyone has to buzz in to the front office from the front gate and all the students parents and students who drive are given a password to enter which is changed weekly and only given to students and parents e-mails weekly. Security is pretty tight here. I attend a private school that has three schools. A lower school which has Kindergarten to 5th Graders, a middle school which has 6th Graders through 8th Graders, and then my school the upper school which has 9th through 12th Graders. So there are a lot of kids on this campus.

That is tighter security than you find at some technology firms. Your Principal's name wouldn't happen to be Stanger, would it?  ;D

In my Elementary and Middle School years Mom would always pack me a lunch which included some juice in Elementary school. In Middle School I would buy Juice or Milk. In High School I would brave it and buy my lunch and once I was driving I was able to go out to lunch during the lunch period.
