Midge: Use her more?

Midge Klump

So I never understood why ACP never really developed Midge more than just eye candy for Reggie and other guys to look at and than Moose to demolish when they do look at her. She could have been much more than that and even more of a close friend to Betty and Veronica. What disturbs me even more is they continue to mostly forget about her while developing new female characters like Ginger Lopez and Toni Topaz.

Everytime I hear the name Midge I think of Barbie's old friend who was also jettisoned in favor of more trendy African and Asian doll friends.

Original Sin

Midge is bit of a MacGuffin.

Original Sin

Actually, I think it would be funny if they made her last name MacGuffin. Midge MacGuffin, doesn't sound too bad. XD

In Life With Archie Midge was very important character. She married Jughead & had his baby. And she kinda evil in Archie Marries Veronica side. She hated that Jughead wouldn't marry her. He cared more about the restaurant

I agree that one short series she was used quite extensively, but for as long as she has been around she definitely could have been developed way more than just for a short series.

70 + years and the only thing we know about her is that she dyes her hair black  ;D

Pretty much and apparently she likes it cute short. It don't make sense. You even bring in a character like Cheryl Blossom later one than Midge and don't get me wrong I love Cheryl Blossom, but they develop her character to where she pretty much becomes an overnight sensation.

I think it's because she has shorthair like Ethel which isn't typically thought of as sexy. All the other girls who are famous in the Archie world have long hair and are usually marketed as sex symbols or at least drawn cute to attract attention. Hiring Adam Hughes a cheesecake artist goes along with that.

I actually find Midge very attractive in a cartoon sense as I have also had short hair myself most of my life so I kind of like it. Midge at least is drawn with curves as Ethel for the most part isn't and is very gawky looking. Adam Hughes is a fantastic artist for what he does. Is it good for Archie comics, I am not completely ready to say he is.

Midge only appear in Archie #2 at Betty's Birthday party. I think Fiona Staples made Midge look awesome. And Midge was in the lunchroom in Archie #2. Plus she was talking to Jughead #7 while in the pool.
Besides Midge, Where has Ethel gone? She was in none of Jughead issues. Will Derek Charm bring her back?

At least Ethel has a more developed personality when she does appear. As for these new series they should focus more on secondary characters that have been around for ages instead of bringing in Trevor, Toni, Ginger, and the other newer characters. Just my two cents.

I'm pretty sure I saw Ethel in the background in one of the earlier issues (maybe #1 or #2). I think it was one of the cafeteria scenes.

Let's face it. Characters like Ethel and Midge don't bring in new readers. Think of popular TV or movie characters. Are any of them gawky girls? Producers usually add non-white but still very attractive characters to attract certain demographics of viewers. Gangly girls traditionally don't want to watch other gangly girls being the butt of the joke, which let's face it, Ethel almost always is. They usually aspire to look like Betty and Veronica and will buy all kinds of makeup, creams, and potions to do so. And companies will be happy to market these products to them.

For example, Ellen Degeneres was the face of some makeup brand for awhile but that was short lived. And now we have "traditionally" pretty and young actresses hawking make up again.

Is anyone asking for a Moose Mason comic? Or Nancy Woods who has a very similar non-personality like Midge. I think if any of the side characters would get their own comic it would be someone like Pepper or Valerie and they would write them much more sarcastically and "edgy" in line with today's humor. They would probably be written more like bad girls.

Midge gets lumped in with Ethel as gawky and gangly?  ???    The idea that having a short hairstyle somehow makes her unattractive is ridiculous.

Yeah, that must be the reason Reggie has endured hundreds of painful beatings from Moose over the years in his attempt to make time with her. The only other girl that Reggie ever attempts to date anywhere near as frequently is Veronica. There are several stories from the 1960s that imply that Midge is the most desirable girl in Riverdale, including a few where Archie either dates her or attempts to do so. In her earliest appearances, she's always referred to as "the sorority queen", which attests to her social status as one of the most popular girls at Riverdale High -- which makes sense in light of the fact that she's going steady with Moose, who's RHS's star athlete. The context of what makes for interesting stories in Archie Comics means that steady couples like Moose and Midge and Chuck and Nancy are considered boring and thus not given that much attention, even moreso for Midge and Nancy than for Moose and Chuck.

The problem is, Midge is kind of trapped in this one gag, where every setup has some guy who either talks to her or looks at her (or at least Moose so believes), followed by the same (literal) punchline -- a beating by Moose. Midge's potential character development is pretty much imprisoned in that gag situation for as long as it endures, and it's never really gone away.

Professor Bart Beatty of Calgary University, who wrote the only serious critical examination of Archie Comics, TWELVE CENT ARCHIE, claims that Midge is his favorite character.
QuoteI've gone through waves where I've switched in the two and a half years that it took me to put this book together. I went through a long period where I decided that Moose was my favourite character, and then Midge became my favourite character.
