BETTY & VERONICA DOUBLE DIGEST #249 - Fun new lead 5-page story by Dan Parent. Seems like it barely got started before it was over. Lately I've been craving some longer stories. I don't think there were any other stories in here (apart from the Sabrina reprint section) that I hadn't read before.

JUGHEAD'S DOUBLE DIGEST #106 (Oct. 2004), #114 (Sept. 2005), #115 (Oct. 2005), #118 (Feb. 2006) - Nothing too notable in these, but I like seeing the then-recent (possibly even new at the time) Jughead stories drawn by Fernando Ruiz. There always seems to be at least 2 or 3 of those in every issue. I think Jughead is the character I most associate with Fernando. While I would probably admit to preferring the Craig Boldman/Rex Lindsey team on Jughead (they are pretty difficult to beat in my estimation), the short stories both written and drawn by Fernando are a close second. I would say that he seems to have written only about half (or less) of the Jughead stories he drew, so there are all sorts of other writers, George Gladir probably being the most prominent.

I'll probably read some books later. I read Archie #15-Joe Eisma issue. It was one from my subscription.

JUGHEAD & ARCHIE WINTER ANNUAL #24

Any good stories ie Boldman? I'm debating on whether to buy this or not. The last Jughead digest was really good.

There are several Boldman/Lindsey Jughead stories in this one (I didn't count them, but I don't have it here right now; I'll go back and look and let you know later), and several Fernando Ruiz-drawn stories too, as well as the usual expected older Samm Schwartz stories, and a mish-mosh of others.

B & V FRIENDS JUMBO COMICS #252 came in the mail today. I'll be reading that later tonight and tomorrow. Already read the new lead story by Dan Parent. Very unusual theme to this one, entitled "OWL Be Seeing You!". Seems B & V are very concerned about birds flying into the large glass windowpanes of the Lodge mansion, due to a flock of migrating owls passing through Riverdale. Can't say I've ever seen any sort of variation on this particular plot before. I guess Dan just reads things in the news or sees them on television, and decides to write a story about it. He did that last year with a Jughead story about 'hoverboards' (which actually look like some kind of spinoff of the Segway technology) being unsafe and prone to malfunctions. Oh well, I guess he must get bored doing variations of the same typical plots we've seen dozens of times already.

Yeah I was curious where the inspiration for this one came from as well. Who knows?? At least we're getting something different.

Yeah, and it fits with the general trend towards more stories demonstrating a pro-social awareness that seem to be a more common theme for B&V stories than for Archie and Jughead stories. The girls always seem to get involved in raising money for charity, and at one time they formed the Green Girls as a club to promote positive eco-action in the community. Those are just a couple of examples that come to mind off the top of my head, but I'm sure you could probably add half-a-dozen more if you really thought about it, or browsed through a dozen or so B&V digests, so promoting awareness of how human communities impact wildlife isn't much of a stretch. I think I'm gonna say that ACP has a bigger awareness of how much more B&V are role models for young female readers, as opposed to say, Archie and Jughead for young male readers.

That probably has something to do with the softening of Veronica's less-admirable personality traits in the 2000s as well, now that I think about it -- although it certainly has as much to do with keeping her as a likeable protagonist starring in her own title for a couple of decades, too. Cheryl certainly became more likeable as the protagonist of her own series during the years when she had one, and since she lost it and went back to being a mere supporting character, she gets cast in the villain role more often than not.

Trying to slog through the mid 2000s Betty and Veronica stories (Issue 200 or so) to complete Betty and Veronica on comics.org. Poor Jeff Shultz. The stories aren't that great plot wise. Most of them just feature Betty and Veronica without any other characters.

Well, I've read #200. That was a pretty good story, I thought (Kathleen Webb, IIRC). I would say if they begin to get boring and repetitious after that... good possibility that they're Mike Pellowski stories?

Fun Fact: If you're reading an uncredited ACP story from the 1990s or early 2000s, and there's some minor incidental character in it named "Melanie" or "_______ Morgan", chances are pretty good that it's a Mike Pellowski story. Pellowski also wrote the Riverdale High prose novel series from 1992-1993, and adapted a bunch of them (under different titles) as the "New Look Archie Series", writing under the pseudonym Melanie J. Morgan. Since by this time he'd already written hundreds of comic stories for ACP, it's unknown why he employed a nom de plume for that series. Unless he was wary of the potential fan backlash, which in fact is exactly what ensued.

JUGHEAD & ARCHIE WINTER ANNUAL #24
Any good stories ie Boldman? I'm debating on whether to buy this or not. The last Jughead digest was really good.

Here's a list of some of the better stories in this issue (about half of them - Boldman stories in bold):

"Oh, Brother... or Sister" (Parent/Parent, 5 pages, NEW) - Jughead, Archie, Reggie & Jellybean in a 'Snow Day' story.

"The Ice Breaker" (Doyle/DeCarlo Jr.-J. DeCarlo, 5 pages) - Archie volunteers to do a favor for Mr. Lodge during an ice storm.

"Snow Day" (Boldman/Lindsey, 6 pages) - Jughead proves to Reggie that he can throw snowballs at people without them getting mad at him.

"Snow Bored" (Pellowski/Ruiz, 6 pages) - Archie's helps Mr. Lodge demonstrate the new Lodge 'Sno-Scoot', a powered snowboard, to prospective buyers.

"Hot Lips" (Doyle/Crane, 5 pages) - Jughead saves a little girl stuck in a snow drift, and is rewarded as a hero by her grateful older sister.

"Resolution Solution!!" (Golliher/Golliher, 6 pages) - Jughead makes himself sick by trying to eat healthy to set an example for Jellybean.

"=Garbage In=> <=Garbage Out=" (Boldman/Lindsey, 11 pages) - Jughead's dad assigns him the simple chore of taking out the garbage, but when Juggie fails to get it to the curb in time for the pickup, then tries to hide the evidence of his failure, a series of comedic consequences result.

"Bored Dumb!" (Pellowski/Ruiz, 5 pages) - Jughead & Archie are having a tough time making it through Study Hall without annoying The Bee.

"Nose Job" (Doyle/Goldberg, 6 pages) - When Betty tells Archie how her dad used to put her to sleep by rubbing her nose as a baby, Archie tries it on her, and she goes into a deep, unwakeable sleep, standing in the hallway of Riverdale High.

"Just When You Thought It Was Safe to Go Back Inside... GNAWS!" (Margopoulis/Goldberg, 11 pages) - Archie & Jughead hire themselves out to Mr. Lodge for the weekend as mice exterminators at his mountain cabin.

"Hideaway" (Boldman/Lindsey, 5 pages) - Jughead is delighted to accidentally discover that his favorite old couch has hidden a fold-out bed all along.

"Cafeteria Crisis" (Golliher/Ruiz, 6 pages) - When Ms. Beazley goes on strike, the only people freaking out are Jughead and Mr. Weatherbee.

"Turn the Other Chick!" (Boldman/Lindsey, 6 pages) - Ethel is dismayed by all the attention Jughead is getting from other girls like Debbie Dalton and Joani Jumpp, but turnabout is fair play.

"Battling Butlers" (Boldman/Lindsey, 6 pages) - Reggie visits Veronica's house with his own butler in tow - Jughead, which leads to some confusion on the part of an important client of Mr. Lodge's as to who's butlering for whom.
