Let's turn the tables and analyze Trula Twyst - why she is who she is.....

Mr.Lodge

I'll start. Her parents are divorced (dad lives somewhere else) and her mom writes a lot of relationship books. Here are some panels to help you get started. Don't base your opinion of her just based on these.

DeCarlo Rules

These are some of the rare examples of pages that show Trula not in control of her emotions. Usually, the shoe's on the other foot, with Jughead, the normally cool and collected one, being frazzled and frustrated. That story, the last 3 images you showed here, where Jughead, in an act of desperation, decided to follow Archie's advice that moving in with Trula (with her psychological expertise) might actually help him work out some of his issues with his dad, so he was willing to submit to being a bug under her microscope, as he imagined it. Jughead had always thought of Trula as a Machiavellian schemer, a mad scientist who treated him like a lab rat or a puppetmaster that pulled his strings. Yet in the story where he moves in with her and her mother, she does nothing of the kind. She treats him cordially as she would any house guest, and in sympathy towards his problems with his dad, does nothing to interfere. In that particular instance, it turned out that NOT being studied like a lab rat (contrary to his expectations) is what drives Jughead bonkers. He's waiting and waiting for it to happen, but it never does. Trula really does treat him like a friend in need, until he snaps from the pressure he imagines he's under. That finally causes Trula to break her calm demeanor as a gracious host and go ballistic. The ultimate cause was Jughead's annoying habit of constantly leaving the cap off his toothpaste tube, getting toothpaste all over the sink countertop. Ironically though, Trula would have been glad to help him understand his problems if he'd only ASKED her for help. She doesn't volunteer that help, unasked, because she doesn't want to be a busybody, and wants to respect him as a guest in her home. Only afterward does she question her mother as to why she allowed Jughead to stay with them as a houseguest. Krysta wanted to study Trula's reactions as research for a new book she's writing. She really isn't being mean, but it seems like Trula studying other people to understand them is her way of feeling like she's in control, not only of any situation involving human interaction, but in control of herself and her life. She actually likes Jughead, but she's afraid of not being in control around other people.

Mr.Lodge

She come across as basically in control of almost everything but on the other hand, maybe she's looking for love or validation because of parent's divorce. This is how she was like when she first came on the scene:

Jabroniville

Sorry to resurrect this one, but I had to after going through the archives. Here's the bit from my own RPG build of the character:

-Trula Twyst was a great little storyline in the Jughead books last decade, and I kind of wish they'd do more with it. Forming her "J.U.S.T. Cause", she tracked Jughead, reading into his motives and personality traits, and created a complex plot to make him drop his distaste for romance (through placing herself in his location at every point, making him fascinated with her). This "epic" three-parter ended with Trula finally convincing Jughead that he might have been ROMANTICALLY INTERESTED IN HER. The fact that a woman could do this to Jug made all the other boys in Riverdale High interested in her (I mean, if the He-Man Woman-Hater could fall for a girl, she MUST be awesome, right?), and suddenly Trula was the most popular girl in school, with her pick of guys to date. WHICH WAS HER PLAN ALL ALONG. Doctor Doom, move over, you have been replaced in the Magnificent Bastard arena with a teenage girl.

-Trula appeared several more times over the years to vex Jughead, usually coming out as a surprise ending. Jug never trusted her after her initial manipulation, and she gleefully maneuvered him and others about like puppets on strings as a villainous Femme Fatale. Awesome stuff. And in actuality, she was the only person who almost NEVER got comeuppance from Jughead- his frequent victims Veronica & Reggie almost NEVER pull one over on him, but Trula? Trula nearly always remained victorious. At various points, she made Jughead convinced he spoke only French, subliminally write her initials everywher he went, and made him DISLIKE HAMBURGERS. This makes her one of the most unique Archie Comics females, and I wish they'd do something with her- she just kind of popped up in random backstories as a nemesis, and only in Jughead's book.

Mr.Lodge

I'm more interested in her backstory. Nobody becomes that way overnight. I still feel that her parents being divorced and her mom being a psychologist/writer has almost everything to do with it. It might even be the main reason for the divorce.

Also, at times Trula comes across as very precocious.

DeCarlo Rules

I'd love to see Trula take a crack at sorting out the whole Moose/Midge/Reggie thing. By which I actually mean Midge.
