Refresh History
  • DeCarlo Rules: Presumably with an ongoing B&V series, they'd want to keep it nominally in continuity with the ongoing ARCHIE title.
    September 22, 2018, 07:03:48 am
  • DeCarlo Rules: Oh, I hadn't noticed that the story is "Senior Year", so that explains it. It's a one-off story arc, just like "Freshman Year". They're not going to keep them as seniors permanently, or have them graduate and go on to college in an ongoing series.
    September 22, 2018, 06:59:24 am
  • DeCarlo Rules: Probably just a space-filler while they look for a better writer than Jaime Rotante. I hope.

  • Tuxedo Mark: Wait a minute. Betty and Veronica is only a five-issue miniseries?

  • DeCarlo Rules: It seems like they put extras on a disc because people expect them, or it helps drive sales, but more often than not, it seems like very little thought goes into the content. Of course there are some examples where the extras are exceptional, but usually that's not the case.
    September 10, 2018, 11:42:47 am
  • irishmoxie: I love digital movies and streaming. I usually get the Blu-ray Disc because I like to watch the extras the first time and then end up adding the digital code online or rip it and put it on the hard drive. Just much more convenient to stream it then search for the disc when I want to watch it.

  • DeCarlo Rules: On the other hand, maybe I should just bypass the Blu-Ray format altogether, buy a huge terabyte HD, and download everything. There's something to be said for that, in that you can get everything quicker and stacks of Blu-Ray cases aren't taking up space in your house, I guess.
    August 27, 2018, 03:19:15 pm
  • DeCarlo Rules: This coming from a guy who still hasn't capitulated to the inevitable domination of Blu-Ray. It's getting to the point where I might have to relent, since I've seen some anime sets being released for the first time on Blu-Ray (no combo pak) with NO release of a DVD version.
    August 27, 2018, 03:09:15 pm
  • DeCarlo Rules: I'll never get used to people not being able to wait a few days when they order stuff online. I guess maybe I could understand it IF it were something that there was no other way to see, but I assume you've already seen the episodes.  People who are that impatient usually don't even buy disc sets, they just buy it digitally or stream it.

  • I agree with all your points, DCR. Dan does have a really cool variant cover for the first issue of the upcoming "Archie 1941" arc.

  • DeCarlo Rules:
  • Another good question would be -- why is there no DAN PARENT variant of Archie #700 among the TEN variants offered? I'm forced to conclude that ACP did not consider Dan Parent's contributions to the previous 699 issues to be substantial enough to warrant any consideration of that possibility. That just plain sucks.

  • I guess what I'm trying to say is that when every single publisher out there is in the same racket of exploiting collectors' OCD tendencies with variant covers, it means that for every $4 I spend on one of those variants, it means $4 less that I have to spend on some other worthy creator's comic book which has a unique story. It's probably harder for someone who's solely focused on Archie Comics, as a publisher, to see that, because Archie Comics ALONE is not producing enough comic books even WITH all those variants, to strain anyone's budget.

  • I want to support my favorite artists who derive part of their income from those variant covers, but it feels like an internal conflict of interest for me every single time.

  • DeCarlo Rules:
  • Look, I know I'm probably not explaining myself clearly here. If you look at the solicitations from Archie Comics on any given month, and add up the average number of pages of brand-new stories published in any given month, it's an ALARMINGLY low total. That average total has been on a steady downward spiral from 20, 10, or even just 5 years ago. Good cover art is good cover art, but nobody needs 2, 4, 6, 8, or 20 copies of the same interior story. It feels like the publishers are dependent on exploiting the obsessive-compulsive personality tendencies of collectors, and feels very unhealthy for the readers and for the industry as a whole. It's also fair to say that both retailers and working comic artists are somewhat dependent on that system, and the whole thing is very troubling. I'd rather spend my money on an art book like THE ART OF ARCHIE: THE COVERS, or on buying one of those 11"x17" art prints like Dan Parent sells, if what I really want is single images of artwork. A $4 retail price JUST to get a unique cover seems like madness.

  • It would be a lot more awesome if Archie Comics published 20 different TITLES instead of the SAME comic book with 20 different covers, or even if they only published eight different titles.

  • DeCarlo Rules:
  • 8 is already twice as many variants as ARCHIE #700 needs. ACTION COMICS #1000 had 8, and that was probably a couple too many even for a 4-digit milestone. 20 variant covers is just plain ridiculous.
  • August 22, 2018, 12:39:17 pm
  • BettyReggie:
  • How come there is only 8 covers for Archie #700? I thought olit was going have at least 20 because #700 is awesome to get to.

  • Good theory.  The other reason is Thomas Pitilli sucks.  I thought most of the stories in that comic were really, really good. I wrote to Archie saying please change the artist.  Of course they didn't answer.
  • August 09, 2018, 12:38:23 pm
  • DeCarlo Rules:
  • I have a theory about why the Riverdale comic didn't sell well, despite the obvious success of the show, and why it doesn't seem to have improved the sales of ARCHIE, either. Why buy a cow when you can get the milk for free? I can only think of a few rare exceptions where the success of a TV series or movie increased comic sales in any significant way (THE WALKING DEAD). Mostly people don't seem to want to go out of their way or make any effort to be entertained, they just want it to be right there and available.
