Don't dig Archie's grave too soon.
Hell--wee might even see a Disney buyout.

I highly doubt that. Disney already owns the biggest comic book publisher in America, Marvel Comics. And yet... they are licensing the publishing of classic Disney characters out to other comics publishers like IDW, Fantagraphics, Joe Books LTD and Papercutz. It's true that Marvel Comics does publish a few Disney-related comics, but nearly all of them are limited series, and they sell poorly compared with other titles Marvel publishes.

Would anyone even want to see a Disney buyout of Archie Comic Publications? I've seen no evidence that Disney really even knows how to market a line of all-ages comics itself. So, no... bad idea. Nor do I think Disney would even be interested. They bought Marvel only because of the wealth of characters they own, and the movie and merchandising potential those characters represent. Archie? Nope.

A better potential buyout would be if Scholastic Books were interested.

All About Archie / Re: THE CANCELLATION REPORT
February 10, 2017, 06:34:51 AM
MAJOR UPDATE:
Trying to get this thread back on the topic of Archie Comic Publications cancellations, I went back through the Diamond PREVIEWSWORLD website, and checked out the archived cancellation reports for every month, going all the way back through 2010. Even this HUGE list of ACP cancellations isn't completely complete, though... I know for a fact of several publications (primarily trade paperbacks and hardcovers) that I did not find on the list anywhere. I'm not entirely sure how to account for that, but I suspect that the reports are generated by accessing a list of cancellation codes for every single product solicited, and I suspect that after a certain amount of time has passed, certain order code numbers for previously-solicited products may be deleted from Diamond's database permanently. I also encountered a few busted links to archived reports from 2010. ALL of the links for archived cancellation reports from 2009 (which is as far back as the archives go) were busted, as well. I may try to trace some of those unpublished but previously-solicited publications later on, by trying to track down the order code numbers. If I do find any of them, I'll edit this list to include them.

First, a little bit about the word "cancelled". To some people, that only means one thing - that a comic book series has permanently suspended publication (that would be Diamond's Cancellation code 09). But to Diamond Comic Distributors, the word "cancelled" means many things. Here's a list of the most common meanings:

Cancellation code   01   Lateness (under Diamond's 30-day Cancellation Policy)
Cancellation code   02   Will Resolicit
Cancellation code   03   Cancelled by Diamond
Cancellation code   04   Cancelled by Publisher
Cancellation code   05   Out of Stock
Cancellation code   06   No More Available from Vendor
Cancellation code   07   Supplier Increments Too High (Diamond did not receive sufficient reorders)
Cancellation code   08   Resolicited Item
Cancellation code   09   Series Cancelled
Cancellation code   10   Vendor Out of Business

On this list, by far the most common cancellation codes will be 02 (Will Resolicit) and 04 (Cancelled by Publisher). A number of the publications on this list DID eventually wind up being published, but rather than delete those listings, I let them stand as a record of ACP's unreliability when it comes to fulfilling the promise of a shipping date listed on their original solicitation of the product. ALL publishers have these sort of cancellations from time to time, but ACP's record as a publisher is among the worst, and it didn't used to be that way. If you look back to 2010 through 2013, their record was merely average for a publisher -- but it's gotten increasingly worse in the last few years. I've included titles from ALL of ACP's imprints here, and color-coded them in order to make it easier to pick out particular titles.

Imprint key
RED = Archie classic titles
GREEN = New Riverdale titles
MAROON = Riverdale TV series tie-in
BROWN = Archie Horror titles
BLUE = Archie Action/Red Circle titles
BLACK = Dark Circle titles

Well, to be fair, that is another universe's version of the gang.

That's what I keep trying to tell people, but as far as some people and ACP are concerned, they consider it "the real deal" universe.

BUT... we are talking about RIVERDALE here. And Adam Huges' BETTY & VERONICA is the one they are reprinting along with the other New Riverdale #1 issues in the trade paperback THE ROAD TO RIVERDALE (or RIVERDALE DIGEST #1 if you're too cheap to shell out for the full-sized TP), and those use the TV series logo, so it's fair to say that ACP is trying to establish a link between the New Riverdale comics and the TV series. Just so you know where I was going with that.

Now, when talking about the comics, which do you think TeenVogue is more likely interested in? Probably the ones ACP sent them as research material for their article. No, I can't see the TeenVogue writer sifting through old classic Archie floppies or digests researching the differences between RIVERDALE and the comics. Scanning through a couple dozen issues of New Riverdale comics sounds like more their speed. And it does account for their saying that B&V are not friends in the comics, compared to the TV show. Besides, I'm sure if it weren't for the TV series, no one connected to TeenVogue would be caught dead reading comics, and if they were, it sure wouldn't be Archie classic-style comics... if they could actually find some of those. But I don't see TeenVogue writers as spending a lot of time cruising the magazine racks at Walmart or Barnes & Noble, do you?

Sonic the Hedgehog, Archie, and Dragon Ball Z is what I've been reading lately.

Dragonball Z isn't still going in Japan, is it? Those are old ones, right?

24 Legacy, The Big Bang Theory, Riverdale, Dragon Ball Z/Super, Sonic X to name on the top of my head.

Yeah, I heard that was supposed to be good for your posture or something. Is that a personal record for you, and how long have you been able to keep them balanced before they fall off?

^ The sad thing is that the liberals do not care. In fact they were applauding what happened at Berkeley. Those terrorists- because that's what they are- destroyed property, burned things, beat people up all in the name of "free speech and love" and no one batted an eye. Even the police did nothing to stop the destruction. Unbelievable. This really should have been a wake up call for the left side, but nope, they are so blind with their hatred they don't want to see.

A wake up call for who? If the police did nothing, does that imply that they're all liberal terrorists too, at least passively? Or maybe they needed to follow orders from the Police Commissioner or something -- which I guess makes him a suspect as a pawn of the left wing. But possibly it was a tense situation where if the police took action, they risked touching off a powder keg of escalating violence. There have always been radical extremists, but they're not conscripts in some sort of Liberal Army that can be court-martialed. They're acting on their own, not following some sinister liberal conspiracy master plan. Maybe they'll become the new cliche comic book villains, replacing the 'crazy as a bag of cats' right-wing conservative nutcases. It could happen. I'm sure I've probably already read a dozen stories with radical eco-terrorists, so it probably will. And yes, you will have some people who would never act on it, but will cheer them on, just like there were people saying "Nuke Iraq!" after 9/11.

I guess it's probably just easier to divide all people into a Red Team and a Blue Team, and make sure they always wear their uniforms so we can all tell each other apart and know who's the enemy. And if someone refuses to wear the uniform and show team spirit, then they must be a player for the opposite team, so you know you can't trust them. That's just a mental exercise in visualization, but what really happens is that people latch onto a word for identifying the enemy, and then proceed to start rubber-stamping everyone with one name or the other (purely for the purposes of keeping the Bad Guys sorted out). If you're doing it, then you can guarantee someone else is doing it to you. We don't need no stinking badges. It is amazingly difficult to be a terrorist or even a radical without an ideology. Even an anarchist has an implied ideology, whether he'll admit to it or not. Just accept the fact that the minute you start sorting people into lists of USes and THEMs, you become part of the problem, not part of the solution. Is it any wonder I hate politics?

True story: The Pledge of Allegiance was changed in the 1950s to include the words "One nation, under God" in the hopes that it would help root out Communists in our midst. Because it's a well known fact that all Communists are Atheists, and thus it was assumed the reverse also applied. I'm not really sure if the intended effect was more along the lines of spontaneous human combustion or just a bad actor being dumbstruck in the middle of a performance.

i found this article.. how is riverdale different from archie comics

http://www.teenvogue.com/gallery/how-riverdale-is-different-from-archie-comics

IMO, except for having the Lodges divorced, every change the TV show made was for the worse.   That article made some mistakes-Betty and Veronica are certainly friends in the comic book.  It's one of the biggest jokes in the series.  IRL, they would consider their friendship more important than dating Archie and both dump him.

Apparently their friendship is not more important than replacing Pop Tate's with a Lodge-owned coffee franchise, though. Or so Adam Hughes would have us believe. And apparently, TeenVogue did believe.

One major thing about the identity-switch subplot that doesn't make sense is the fact that the host families should have received pictures of Betty and Veronica.

Maybe they just sent them some earlier issues of B&V, and the foreign families couldn't tell one from the other apart from their clothing and hairstyles/colors. All pretty girls from Riverdale do tend to look very much alike.  :)  Wasn't there a story where B&V swapped clothes and wore wigs, and even Mr. Lodge couldn't tell that Betty wasn't his real daughter?

School Bites chapter 1 and 2. A bit disappointed. The art and writing is better in Holly G's turn in Sabrina and Cheryl Blossom. Reminded me a lot of Eerie Cuties.

The storyline is a bit disjointed and meandering, sort of a loosely connected series of scenes. Worse still is that there are no character design templates, and Holly is constantly shifting her style of drawing. Cherri Creeper and her friends never quite look the same from one scene to the next, almost as if Holly's drawing style was reflecting her mood the day she drew that page. I'm not a fan of the chibi style in particular. There were a lot of times when I became momentarily confused about which character I was looking at, and the fact that all the characters are usually wearing their school uniforms wasn't helping.

It's great that she's so talented that she's able to draw well in such a wide variety of styles, but visual identification of the characters is one of the primary means of reader identification with the characters. She should have picked one style and stuck with it, because she can't assume the readers are going to like all the different styles equally. It's annoying, like having an Archie story drawn in the styles of Little Archie, New Look Archie, Classic Archie, and New Riverdale Archie on random pages within the same continuing story.

Vampire Cheerleaders (Zoom Comics; I followed the link from the Pixie Trix site) is another webcomic series I've been checking out that bears a lot of similarities to School Bites, Eerie Cuties, and Monster High (or for that matter, Darin Henry's Super Suckers). The artwork in the first couple of volumes of VC is by Shiei, whose style reminds me of Shouri's art for Pixie Trix Comix. VC even has a companion series, Paranormal Mystery Squad, with shared characters, just like Eerie Cuties and Magick Chicks. VC/PMS might even share the same universe with EC, MC & Dangerously Chloe, as there were a couple of short guest strips where (in a flashback to childhood scene) Layla from EC gave the main character from VC the same skull-shaped hairpin that she wears. (VC and PMS are both also available in digital and paperback).

Went to work, then stopped at the grocery store to pick up some food on the way home. Watched some cartoons, did laundry, and read a book. No comics reading, oddly enough.

You read books too? What book?

The Art of the Pimp by Dennis Hof.

I'm not even sure what prompted me to buy it (it was some years back, and I just never got around to reading it until now), probably just that I liked the cover (no pictures) and it sounded like it might be good for a laugh. At the time I didn't even know who this Dennis Hof guy was, but for whatever reason I just saw it sitting there the other day and realized I never did read it, so I picked it up and started browsing it, then went back and started reading from the beginning. It turned out to be an interesting book. I think I was expecting maybe around a 90%+ level of BS, but now I don't know what to think. There's one whole chapter devoted to a scenario where he gives a motivational talk about "The Art of the Sale" to one of the girls, explaining (in detail) how she should negotiate the highest price from the customer for the girl's services, and it effectively rips away the curtain, giving away the secret of his success, which left me wondering why he would do that (not only because he's giving away free advice to his competitors, but isn't it pretty much guaranteed that all the clients at the Bunny Ranch are going to be reading it also?). Also there are sidebar pieces throughout the book where he allows his most outspoken critics to have their say in their own words, and again... I just have to wonder WHY he'd give equal time to his detractors. What it boils down to is that the guy has a history in sales (real estate and time-shares) as a businessman, and sees the sex business as no different than selling any other product, but he says even in his real estate days he could never sell any property that he didn't believe in (like something next to the airport). To him it's all about changing the customer's perception of value for money, and insuring customer satisfaction and repeat business, and he sees the key to that as motivation and positive thinking, where the girls are trying to level up their game. The girls are his sales team, and they're all independent contractors who split their self-negotiated fees 50/50 with the house (they also retain the right to refuse any client -politely- or any specific request, if they aren't comfortable with it, and the rooms are wired for audio in case of any emergency, for their safety). Hof also did some reading of Dale Carnegie's books and his whole sales approach seems to stem from the idea of motivating his workers to achieve success so that they can use that wealth to move on to whatever their goals are. It does seems like he's improved the working conditions, and from a business perspective it seems to make perfect sense - you build a successful company by having successful, motivated workers who are there because they want to be there, not because they have nowhere else to go. Definitely NOT what I was expecting, but fascinating.

These are the rainbow bagels

The blue one they called a unicorn bagel which had oreo cream cheese, the red pink one they called a valentines bagel and had fruitty pebbles cream cheese

Seems overly complicated to me. Couldn't you just cover the bagel with cake frosting decorations and it would be just as healthy? Or say, some 50/50 blend of cake frosting & cream cheese with different food colorings. Then maybe use the Oreo crumbles or Fruity Pebbles just like sprinkles. Just pretend it's a cupcake, that works.

Here's more info on that DC/Hanna-Barbera event I mentioned in my previous post. Four team-up/crossover "Annual" one-shots (each has a cover price of $4.99 and is 48 pages) comprise the event, all of them slated to ship to comic shops on March 3, 2017:

Jonny Quest, Hadji, Dr. Quest and Race Bannon have a plan, but it's going to involve a dangerous trek through Dino Boy's Lost Valley of prehistoric threats! No problem - we all know how persuasive Booster can be, right? Right?! And in the backup feature starring The Jetsons, in a new twist on an old twist about our future, The Jetsons live in a world of robotics and gadgetry. But how does dying change when grandma's brain can be digitally imprinted onto a housecleaning robot?

Stripped of their weapons by a xenophobic culture, the duo will have to battle to regain them - but what happens when Space Ghost dons the Emerald Ring and Hal Jordan put on the Power Bands? And in the backup feature, Ruff and Reddy were once the toast of nightclubs, variety shows, late night chat fests and Broadway. Back in the day you had 3 channels, no cable. Now, lets move along to 2017. We have 500 channels. Getting a ratings hit today is extremely difficult. Networks just don't give a show a chance to develop anymore. They order 13 episodes, sometimes less. If the show does poorly, it's gone. Anyone remember the joke from the TV show "Family Guy"? Where Peter comes in the door & tells everyone their show's been cancelled. Any chance? They ask. Peter say's, well, if any of these shows get cancelled from FOX we have a chance. He then rattles off about 30 TV shows that aired that season on FOX. Every one of them cancelled.

And so was Family Guy. Yup, it was cancelled. But then the show was rerun in a late-night time slot (I can't quite recall if it was Comedy Central, or Cartoon Network, but it was one of those two), and when Fox got a look at those numbers, the show got UN-cancelled, and has since been running for years and years.
