All About Archie / Re: The Jughead/Veronica Feud
May 23, 2016, 03:11:14 AM
Zdarsky says in a tweet that he thinks Jughead is "asexual with aromantic leanings" and that if Jughead was older he'd probably make him asexual but not aromantic. Yeah a lot of people wouldnt like it if Jughead started dating in the reboot, unfortunately that book probably won't last long enough for his sexuality to matter. Someone posted the sales figures recently and I'd guess it's only got a few years left. I'd like to think the tv show will help but I doubt it will much.  :(

Even as bad as things are for classic Archie right now, that's probably the version with the best chance of surviving, maybe with some changes and hopefully another 32 pager someday. I don't know if ACP will ever call classic Jughead asexual but I guess it would be a good idea, it would give some representation without changing anything about him since "asexual" as I guess you know covers everything from aromantics to demisexuals and occasional primary sexual attraction (classic Archie wouldnt be obvious about that now, but in the future they might pull anything).

But yeah, ACP would never make classic Jughead strictly aromantic for the reason you said, it cuts off potential stories. I don't think even most advocates of asexual Jughead want that with all the Jughead ship art I've seen them post lately. I'd be happy with all-aro classic Jughead but I'm okay with almost all aro since most people want him to have some romantic potential.

Okay, I went looking for Jughead/Veronica fan art, there isn't any, but I found this:

Bob Montana didn't intend for Jughead to be completely aromantic. That clinches it, creator intent counts for a lot with me, not everything but a lot.

I wonder why there's no Jughead Veronica fan art, it seems like a popular ship?  ???

It looks good but I only know Space Ghost from Space Ghost Coast to Coast.

Then again tenuous is the key word in Archie parodies.

Funny but tenuous.

Yeah I wish Nintendo had picked it up.  :(

So are Betty/Reggie fans hoping to see some romance on the new tv show, or are you going to sit this one out?

Nice costumes on the girls! This doesn't sound like Dan Parent though, is it just me or does this feel like one of their wrong credits?

Thanks for the info, daren! You're awesome. I'm still on the fence about aromantic asexual Jughead.

I like to think of him as aromantic but I know he isn't completely. There's been at least ten stories or so where he's heteroromantic, not much but even a small amount makes a difference. If Veronica had ten lesbian romances in her history we wouldn't call her hetero, and if Kevin fell in love with a girl we'd probably call him bi.

Actually when you think about it Veronica would be the best mate for asexual Jughead, there's a lot of stories where she's like this:

She's still horny sometimes but she's less interested in physical affection than any of them, besides Jughead...well and maybe Dilton. Sorry Veronica, you might lose Jughead to the superbrain!  :)

Well, we already have Mark Waid & Ryan North & soon Adam Hughes writing/drawing Archie comics so how would it be different from another company exactly? These are the people from the other companies.

I was talking about the classic style Archie stories, if another company put out Archie I think they'd at least try to start with that.

It would be obvious just from the play he's the antagonist/hambone because no one puts on a public play starring himself talking about how great he is starring also his real life girlfriends. Seriously Reggie is my favorite character and he gets dumped on a lot but I know this isn't the kind of play that should make your mother beam with pride, no matter how much I like it.

IF it is indeed obvious, AND if Reggie is indeed trying to pull the wool over his mother's eyes -- WHY is she there at the play? Why doesn't Reggie try to hide the fact that he's performing it from her, unless he's secretly wanting to get caught showing his true nature in front of his mom? Isn't he even the slightest bit worried that he's 'showing his true colors' in front of her? If Reggie knew she was going to be in Riverdale to attend the play, he could easily have avoided her being able to attend by arranging some diversionary subterfuge to prevent her attending. Failing that, he doesn't even show the slightest bit of uneasiness over the fact that he knows his mom in in the audience watching.

But there IS no conflict -- he's NOT trying to hide anything from her, and she finds it acceptable because she finds nothing wrong with him. Her opinion of him is too strongly positive for this to penetrate as a revelation about him. Therefore, there is another explanation (satire? inside joke?) for what's going on in the play that she isn't even going to try to figure out, because accepting the notion that her son is a delusional egomanic is NOT a possible or acceptable explanation for her. She automatically dismisses this seeming bit of information about her son's ego that conflicts with her prior mental image of him.

But I'm saying he's NOT trying to fool her, she must know what he's like if she's not neglectful so she's just STRANGE at that play approving of his narcissist show, there's no in joke or satire.... :tickedoff:

In focusing on Mrs. Mantle, you're ignoring the greater mystery of absurd logic about this story, which is:

What could possibly convince Betty (especially Betty) and Veronica -- whose personalities we have MUCH more information on than the enigmatic Mrs. Mantle -- to participate in this self-serving farce of ego aggrandizement?

???

Okay you win.

But he overcame it just like she will.  :)  And yeah, no evidence Veronica could rebuild a fortune like that since a lot depends on luck but I think she would TRY and under all her problems she has a lot of will and brains.

I agree. Even if Veronica matured and became less materialistic, she's still accustomed to a certain lifestyle and there's no way you could take it away from her without her kicking and screaming.

On the other hand, if some twist of fate were to reduce Veronica to working for a living, there's no real evidence that she could make a fortune starting from scratch. We're not even entirely sure that Hiram Lodge didn't start out with certain benefits and advantages to get the snowball of his vast fortune rolling.

Yeah most stories that go there say he did.

The idea Bob Montana started out with was that the Lodges were "Bostom Brahmins" and most writers keep on with the old money idea. The way I like to see it, Mr. Lodge was probably spoiled and irresponsible like Veronica when he was her age.

While I do prefer old money Lodges, some modern stories have Hiram working his way up from nothing. Then there was this gag I really liked from one story where Archie asked Mr. Lodge where he got all his money, and Veronica chimes in to say he married her mom who had $40 million.

Story title?? I don't think I read that and it sounds excellent.

She just doesn't have the kind of drive and empire building skills that her father has to amass fortunes.

That reminds me of the awesome AWM episode where Hiram reverts back to his teenage self and challenges Weatherbee to drag race to the death around Dead Man's Curve just for the hell of it! Thanks, I forgot to post this yesterday!

Yeah I don't think he was always an empire building genius, maybe the Lodges are late bloomers. Anyway a spoiled undisciplined girl becoming a master businesswoman makes a more dynamic story arc than if she just kept racking up credit card debt her whole life so even for that alone I'd believe in her.

I will admit that Della has a magnetizing effect on me... I am both strongly attracted (by her physical appearance) and repulsed (by her overbearing authoritarian personality) in equal measure.

I'm not repulsed at all!  :)

My list would be Della, Aunt Hilda, Salem, Sabrina, Cousin Ambrose, Aunt Zelda and Harvey. Any other character probably falls somewhere under Sabrina and above Harvey. (The classic comic version of Harvey I mean, I never watched the tv shows)

If it was Marvel or DC, I still might, but not if they started incorporating Archie with their own characters, i.e. Archie vs Spider Man

Mark Waid pushed for a Batman '66/Archie team-up, but it's hard for me to imagine how that would work. I'm not feeling the vibe between those two.

I think a '40s Batman/Archie teamup would make more sense. Yeah and Spidey Meets Archie would be awesome.

Well I'm glad everyone would be willing to give a new company a shot, I do think it would be smart for them to rehire Fernando Ruiz, Dan Parent, the Kennedys and the rest so that the new version wouldn't feel too alien but they might be unavailable by that time.
