Now that you mention it, I miss the kind of television series where you didn't have to commit to it for the duration of the series to get anything out of watching an hour of TV. Or at least, split the difference and do the "Plot A/Plot B" format where Plot A tells a complete story, and Plot B continues an ongoing subplot.
That's an interesting point.  I'd never enjoy a show like Weeds or Sons Of Anarchy if I just watched random shows, or in todays market watched them out of order.  It was nicer to just watch a show because you enjoyed the theme or characters.  Sitcoms and Detective shows lent themselves best to that, I think.  The original Star Trek did that for the most part.  I think one could cherry pick any episode as a first time viewer and follow along.

...Briefly , a lot of newspapers out here on the West Coast publish , on Saturdays , an " early Sunday " edition ~ billed as that ~ with Saturday's newspaper , but the Sunday comics and ad supplements , or something like that ~ and , again , billed as " Early Sunday " .
An attempt by the bosses to get around paying their people for two days , just one instead on the petense that " It's just two Sunday editions " ? Then no doubt they'd say it was " being lean & mean " :tickedoff: and " doing more with less " :knuppel2: (My parents were both newspaper reporters .)...
I didn't know any papers "doubled up" on the comics they printed, but it's probably just a general cost cutting measure as the publisher determined the majority of customers don't buy the paper both days.  I don't know the royalty or payment rules, but I suspect the paper pays for using one comic per calendar date(as I believe you do as well). I'm an example of a customer not contributing to the coffers as I can't justify buying a Sunday paper and haven't in years, but maybe I'd buy the later Saturday(advance Sunday) edition to get the ads, inserts, and whatnot.

All About Archie / Re: 666 detentions?
September 11, 2016, 02:11:34 AM
Maybe Archie didn't really serve 666 detentions, but was only assigned that number.  You know how some criminals commit heinous acts and received 125 years prison time or some such number.

Related, there's a story in Reggie #1 where Ms. Grundy gives Reggie 30 detentions in one day, and also Miss Pownce(English Teacher) orders Reggie to stay an hour extra after school in for as long as it takes for him to complete a 1,000 PAGE essay.  I would imagine such an undertaking to be time consuming.

Interesting that you broke down the time needed to serve 666 detentions, it hadn't crossed my mind, but is funny to think about.

I missed the boat altogether as I thought the humor was in the idea that it was prolly a recursive algorithm.  Live and learn.

Archie's Friends / Re: Obscure characters

Anyone remember Scott Pansky?  He seemed to be a one-off throwaway character in his few appearances, but he was a real life person included in the comics.

I like the original Trek series and even TNG, but don't have a good memory for titles and details.  The one where Spock needs to mate is cool and of course "Trouble with Tribbles".  I've always like this series and I'm not a sci-fi person.  It's just adventure in space.

I have decided to go ahead and launch the wiki. It still needs quite a bit of work in the backend (I haven't created the privacy policy or copyright pages yet, the disclaimer is pretty generic and I'm still using the default logo), but I feel it's more important to go ahead and give everyone access so you can get started working on the fun stuff.

The wiki is located at http://wiki.archiefans.com - those of you who are registered on the forum will automatically be registered there. If you are still seen as a guest even though you're logged in to the forum, you will need to log out of the forum and log back in again. This is due to a change in the way cookies are stored that I made a while back - the change makes cookies from the main site work for the subdomain too Smiley

A few basics before you get started:

Do not copy information from Wikipedia. You may use it as a reference, as long as you mention this in your article, but you may not copy information from Wikipedia as it is under a different license than the one I'm using.

Please place things in their proper namespace:

Titles: all articles about a particular title published by Archie Comics (example: Betty and Veronica would be .../Titles:Betty_and_Veronica)
Stories: all articles about a particular story (.../Stories:Story_Name)

Any articles on a particular issue of a title should be created as a subpage of that title's main page:

Betty and Veronica #1 would be created as .../Titles:Betty_and_Veronica/Issue_1 (the "Issue" helps clarify what the article is about)

All other articles go in the main namespace and do not require a specific prefix.

For now we just need to focus on getting the articles started - we can fill in details and add references later on.
Yeah, the original post is from Dec. '07.  Wonder whatever happened with the wiki.  I know several members here either index or edit for GCD, so maybe folks just stuck with that site.

I seem to recall that it wasn't there by the time I registered. I remember once trying to check it out to see what was on it, but couldn't find anything there. In any case, it would have been lost in the crash with everything else, I suppose.
I believe the wiki was supposed to be separate from this site.

By the way, I'm not a web site expert by any means, but I've never seen an entire forum deleted without intent(losing the host as one example.).

That's so cool, Who made that? I'm going look on eBay. You should put in a comic frame & hang it on your wall. Amazon sells comic frames.

Thanks. It's by British artist Gary Parkin - not someone whose work I'm familiar with, but obviously I couldn't resist the subject matter. He seems to specialise in painting blank cover variants. I hadn't thought of hanging it on my wall, but you're right, I should
Please "Google" Gary Parkin art fans.   :-X

All About Archie / Re: Veronica Lodge: New To Riverdale?

To know about the original characters, and their first appearances, Archie Americana Best of the Forties is a must read. :D

This, is the first ever appearance of Veronica Lodge.

This was Pep #26.  Where did the story appear when Archie wrote Veronica inviting her to a dance?  Was that "another" first appearance? I'm getting my timelines confuzzled.

Edit:  I'm thinking of Archie #1 which apparently hit the stands in November of 1942.  The story I was recalling was "Prom Pranks". Jughead brought Veronica a corsage containg poison ivy, from a cemetary no less!  But, yeah, it was an origin retelling as Pep #26 was a cover date of April. Archie #1 was not a first appearance as it might have seemed to readers of that issue.

Mr.Meeks
Wasn't he a Riverdale middle school teacher who transferred to a new school and met Archie while out jogging through the park before class?  I believe I read this story recently.

The cool gym class was Bowling. The Bowling Alley was near my house. I remember the teacher was terrible though.
In HS the only cool gym class I remember was when we played dodgeball.  The rest were mostly a waste in terms of exercise and activity.
One exception, and maybe out of the norm for other schools but following Thanksgiving break through the New Year Holiday we did square dancing. So for (like) four weeks and eight classes.  I found this to be super-fun for so many reasons.  "Ladies in, men sashay, promenade, reverse"!   :smitten:

Incalculable.
Squared.

I can say however, um, with some authority that I haven't read enough.

Considering all the variables, 1,000 at minimum per year doesn't seem unreasonable.

It does seem like archaic terminology, but on the other hand, I was wracking my brain trying to think of what IS the current parlance for couples in an exclusive committed dating relationship, then? Or is that just something nobody admits to or talks about anymore?
He or She is my "regular(steady) boo"? Interesting question.  :smiley6600:

Sticking more to the thread topic I read Our Love Story #32 from Marvel(1974), also B&V #149.  I'm tempted to start a "Bronze Age in review" thread as I read and re-read material from this era all the time, but not sure if many are interested in the older stuff.

I'd read it. Any noteworthy stories in Our Love Story #32?
Not really noteworthy, interesting to me for the over the top dramatics, male perspective plots written for the primary story characters(young women), and some nice Gene Colan art.  Pretty good art in general I'd say.  Several stories were reprints from Our Love(#1 & 2 in 1970) as Stan obviously wasn't writing these comics by '74. Not sure when he stopped, kind of like what you were seeing in the Millie comics you posted on the "old" forum.  Sometimes the indicia helps to find the original year of publication, but sometimes not. I just find the romance comics to be a fun read.  Please keep that just between you and me, though.
