    February 16, 2018, 09:50:56 PM
  • DeCarlo Rules: @irishmoxie -- If they are indeed reprinting those early B&V Spectaculars from the Archie Giant Series, I'd agree it's a good choice (although it makes me wonder why they'd bypass the Betty & Veronica Summer Fun issues, which would be even more desirable to have). The early Life With Archie issues are a good choice as well, and I'll be buying both of those collections. Archie at Riverdale High, one of the dullest titles, is more of a puzzling choice. I won't be buying that one.
    February 16, 2018, 05:48:41 AM
  • irishmoxie: I own all of B&V Spectacular and most of the later issues of Life with Archie but I would definitely get these collections as they are easier to read without worrying about tearing the pages of fragile comics. Digital would be even better for me.
    February 15, 2018, 04:27:51 PM
  • irishmoxie: I don't see that classic B&V Vol 1 from the 50s up for pre-order on Amazon anymore. So it looks like they've ditched that idea for now.
    February 15, 2018, 04:26:14 PM
  • irishmoxie: I think their idea was to go with the more "edgy" Classic Archie ie fantasy stories from Life with Archie. I haven't read many of the Archie at Riverdale High books but my impression was that they were the "issue" books focusing on a particular issue pertinent to teens like protesting school lunches or something.
    February 15, 2018, 04:19:01 PM
  • irishmoxie: I suspect they will start the Spectacular collection with the Dan Parent stuff because that is more distinguishable. Older B&V Spectacular stuff is very similar to regular B&V.
    February 15, 2018, 04:17:08 PM
  • rusty: Dark Horse could still have the rights, even if they are not using them.  Archie may be thinking that the Life With Archie and Archie at Riverdale High books wi be more marketable than the older comics.  If so, I would agree with that thinking.  Cosmo is an interesting choice for a collection, but maybe they are hoping to capitalize on the new series or have other plans.
    February 15, 2018, 08:28:49 AM
  • Vegan Jughead: They also have "Cosmo: The Complete Merry Martian" up for pre-order!  How many of these things are in the works? This could be cool, but as DeCarlo Rules says, it's some kind of weird titles they're starting with.
    February 15, 2018, 07:12:42 AM
  • Vegan Jughead: At least these don't say they'll be black and white!  It says they're  "presented in the new higher-end format of Archie Comics Presents".  That sounds promising if they execute it well, and, you know, actually produce and release the books.
    February 15, 2018, 07:11:06 AM
  • DeCarlo Rules: I'm not really sure if the B&V Spectacular collection goes back to include the individual B&V Spec issues from the Archie Giant Series, or starts with #1 of the 1990s series, either.

All About Archie / Re: Classic Betty & Veronica is BACK for $2.99

Even with Supergirl, I like to think I know a fair bit about her history, and I can safely say the current TV series is the best adaptation of her, followed by the "Smallville" incarnation. They're not perfect, but they're good.

Even saying you know about Supergirl's history is sort of an ambiguous statement, because there have been about 5 or 6 different versions of "Supergirl" (some of which weren't even Kal-El's cousin Kara Zor-El), each of which changed basic details of her origin story, making them mutually inconsistent. Even the Kara Zor-El versions of the character are all predicated on the prior existence of Superman in her universe, so it seems a little weird to have a Supergirl television series where there had been no Superman television series beforehand to spin off of. I don't know whether Superman is actually a character in the show, or if there's just some assumption of his offscreen presence. It seems a little like making a Nightwing television series and not having any reference to Batman.

Oh, he's there; he's just used very sparingly. They recently hinted at a sort of Smallville-esque history for him in the "Supergirl" universe (he has a hacker friend named Chloe with a Wall of Weird).

Yeah, I'm aware of the alternate versions of Supergirl. I read anything Supergirl-related that I could get my hands on in the late 1990s / early 2000s. I even read that Peter David series (which was basically Supergirl in name only and had a sucky ending). I haven't read anything past the early 2000s, so I'm unfamiliar with how the rebooted Kara Zor-El has been doing except for what I've read on Wikipedia. Still, from what I've gathered, the show is so influential that the comics have added elements from it. I'd rather not get back into reading her, though, because it might be wiped out during the next reboot.

I'm glad that I gave up superhero comics years ago. I wasn't even a hardcore collector. But I spent an awful lot of money on them. Those $2 or $3 per issue added up, not to mention the cost of gas to get to a place that even had comics. Even when I got into the newer Archie and Tomb Raider comics, ordering them online, the shipping costs were horrible. I haven't bought a physical comic since late 2016.

With the movies and shows, that's often how I learn about these characters.

Even with Supergirl, I like to think I know a fair bit about her history, and I can safely say the current TV series is the best adaptation of her, followed by the "Smallville" incarnation. They're not perfect, but they're good.

As for "Riverdale", I enjoy it. I'm in on the joke, and I think the writers and actors are, too. It's not how I would have done an adaptation, but I look forward to watching each episode.

I loved the Cheryl moments. I didn't see this as getting back at Betty so much as stirring shit up. She actually did both Betty and Kevin a favor by getting this out in the open, even if that wasn't her intent. And it did take guts for Cheryl to go out with Betty into the woods.

All About Archie / Riverdale, season 2, episodes 1-2 (spoilers)
« on: October 18, 2017, 09:12:38 PM »
I figured I'd make a combined thread for both episodes, since there wasn't one for episode 1 last week.

RIP, Ms. Grundy, Moose, and Midge. :(

So Ms. Grundy's ex-husband isn't the Black Hood. Who is?

Betty kept a copy of the video of Clifford killing Jason. And she uses it to blackmail Cheryl, threatening to post it. Total bitch move. But Cheryl seems to have gained respect for Betty (in an odd sort of way).

Veronica's way of cheering up Archie: hawt, naked shower sex.

Still getting used to the new Reggie.

Cheryl lies on the witness stand about Clifford threatening F.P., even though, coincidentally, that's exactly what happened.

Hiram and Hermione can't be trusted.

Yay for Cheryl filling in as a Pussycat. That rooftop performance was cute.

Sweet Goddess, Cheryl is hot!

Due to Hurricane Irma knocking out power for nearly two days this week, I had to substitute a quickie comic book review this week. I opened a storage box and reviewed the first comic that I found, which is Betty and Veronica Spectacular #78 from 2007.

My thoughts:

"Something wicked this way comes" turned out to be in reference to the battle between regular folks and the Serpents. I love the way that Betty says it, though, like she's mocking the whole idea.

Is FP reading "Chilling Adventures in Sorcery" in his jail cell?

I wish Betty, not Veronica, had taken Cheryl home, so they could do some familial bonding. (In general, neither girl seems to be reacting to the fact that they're related.) Cheryl's in a very bad emotional state right now. She needs to be given reasons to live. Betty and Polly are the best people to offer that to her.

Cheryl burns the mansion down. That's a bit of an...overreaction. I mean did she really burn all of her belongings and all of the photos of Jason? Or did she have those placed in storage elsewhere beforehand? Also, where's nana? And do the Blossoms have servants?

The rescue scene was epic. KJ Apa actually broke his hand during filming, so I'm guessing the cast that Archie's wearing in Pop's is genuine.

LOL at Archie looking at himself in the mirror and giving himself that "I totally got laid" look.

So Betty was gonna have sex too, but then she got snake-blocked.

Does Jughead have an ulterior motive for joining the Serpents?

Holy crap, who shot Fred?! There's a theory going around that it's the Black Hood. Jughead calls the incident "anything but random". Is Luke Perry signed for season 2?

This week, I'm reviewing "The New Archies" segment, "Jughead Predicts".

13
Reading it, I haven't noticed really anything in terms of offensive content. There's the occasional "Omigod" or "hell", but that's it. Storywise, there seems to be no difference with Classic Archie (except for the stories being longer, but even Classic Archie was doing some of that in its last few years).

Great episode. I just want to add a few things to what everyone else has said:

My mom audibly gasped when Cheryl attacked Jughead. I can kinda understand it, though.

The Cheryl/Betty bathroom scene was kinda nice but too short. Betty's at a loss for words, so give the girl a hug or something!

Betty is a Blossom. Wow. I did not see that coming. That makes Betty and Cheryl third cousins, I believe. Same for Polly and Jason. Nowhere near scandalous. And, hey, last week, Cheryl was shown to have an interest in a Cooper lady, so...hint, hint.

Betty is the only one to think of Cheryl and what Clifford being the killer might mean for her. She immediately calls her to warn her, returning the solid that Cheryl did for Polly a few episodes back.

Betty has Cheryl's phone number in her contacts list. Just sayin'.

I was in suspense during Cheryl's slo-mo walk. I thought "Oh, man, are they gonna catch her?" Then she confronts her dad, doing the exact opposite of what Betty told her to (get out now). Cheryl has this quiet braveness to her when dealing with her parents (see also: warning Polly). She had no way of knowing how her dad would handle her knowing what he did. I guess she gambled he'd kill himself instead of her. That must have been what she was hoping for. (By the way, is deliberately revealing information to drive a person to suicide a prosecutable offense?)

I felt the wrap-up was rushed. I wouldn't have minded it being extended partly into the next episode. In particular, I would have liked to have seen Cheryl reveal she had the ring. We can assume she told Sheriff Kan'tdomyjob, because Clifford taking back the ring ends up in Jughead's summary, but I wanted to actually see Cheryl go "Surprise, bitches!" or something like that.

So next week's episode is setting up for season 2. Not sure what will happen. Maybe Sabrina will appear?
