    February 16, 2018, 09:50:56 PM
  • DeCarlo Rules: @irishmoxie -- If they are indeed reprinting those early B&V Spectaculars from the Archie Giant Series, I'd agree it's a good choice (although it makes me wonder why they'd bypass the Betty & Veronica Summer Fun issues, which would be even more desirable to have). The early Life With Archie issues are a good choice as well, and I'll be buying both of those collections. Archie at Riverdale High, one of the dullest titles, is more of a puzzling choice. I won't be buying that one.
    February 16, 2018, 05:48:41 AM
  • irishmoxie: I own all of B&V Spectacular and most of the later issues of Life with Archie but I would definitely get these collections as they are easier to read without worrying about tearing the pages of fragile comics. Digital would be even better for me.
    February 15, 2018, 04:27:51 PM
  • irishmoxie: I don't see that classic B&V Vol 1 from the 50s up for pre-order on Amazon anymore. So it looks like they've ditched that idea for now.
    February 15, 2018, 04:26:14 PM
  • irishmoxie: I think their idea was to go with the more "edgy" Classic Archie ie fantasy stories from Life with Archie. I haven't read many of the Archie at Riverdale High books but my impression was that they were the "issue" books focusing on a particular issue pertinent to teens like protesting school lunches or something.
    February 15, 2018, 04:19:01 PM
  • irishmoxie: I suspect they will start the Spectacular collection with the Dan Parent stuff because that is more distinguishable. Older B&V Spectacular stuff is very similar to regular B&V.
    February 15, 2018, 04:17:08 PM
  • rusty: Dark Horse could still have the rights, even if they are not using them.  Archie may be thinking that the Life With Archie and Archie at Riverdale High books wi be more marketable than the older comics.  If so, I would agree with that thinking.  Cosmo is an interesting choice for a collection, but maybe they are hoping to capitalize on the new series or have other plans.
    February 15, 2018, 08:28:49 AM
  • Vegan Jughead: They also have "Cosmo: The Complete Merry Martian" up for pre-order!  How many of these things are in the works? This could be cool, but as DeCarlo Rules says, it's some kind of weird titles they're starting with.
    February 15, 2018, 07:12:42 AM
  • Vegan Jughead: At least these don't say they'll be black and white!  It says they're  "presented in the new higher-end format of Archie Comics Presents".  That sounds promising if they execute it well, and, you know, actually produce and release the books.
    February 15, 2018, 07:11:06 AM
  • DeCarlo Rules: I'm not really sure if the B&V Spectacular collection goes back to include the individual B&V Spec issues from the Archie Giant Series, or starts with #1 of the 1990s series, either.

It's easy to see how this might happen to Archie, but I don't recognise the artist as an Archie artist

Yes, thanks, DeCarlo, for putting this together! :)

Seconded. It's really useful information

I'm very much in the 'non-digital' camp. Perhaps it's that I work at a computer all day, so I don't want to be spending all my leisure time at one, but I enjoy the experience of reading a physical comic book rather than messing about with one on a screen

And if he concluded that anyone but Bob Montana was responsible for the actual work of creation, I'll be shocked.

From the article, "Bob Montana plotted the first story with help from Harry Shorten, who had a Dell editor gone freelance, Vic Bloom, write the dialog. Vic Bloom named the Jughead character and also the area Riverdale. The 'Wally Williams' strip [created by Bloom for Popular Comics #48] had another character called 'Jughead' Lewis and the name of the city was Rivertown".

Has anyone else read Volume 7 of the fanzine 'Lurid Little Nightmare Makers'? I've only just come across it on Ebay, but it was published in December 2016 by Boardman books. It celebrates Archie at 75 and (amongst other, non-Archie things) includes:
  • an article on Archie's creation by Shaun Clancy
  • an interview with Dan Parent and a portfolio of his work
  • 81 Archie covers over the years
  • an article about whether Archie and Veronica had sex in the 1980s
  • a portfolio of Archie artwork as collected by Clancy

The article about Archie's creation is likely to be contentious, but Clancy lays out all the evidence he could find and it's well worth a read

Even if you choose to view it as possible evidence of Betty's bi-curious nature, it doesn't seem particularly funny.

Not in the context of a story, but, out of context, it could be said to be funny, if you thought it was a reference that an Archie editor missed.

I wouldn't want to suggest that it raised more than a smile, but that seemed like the intention of the original post

Maybe I just wasn't clear on why implied LGBT is comical by default. I mean, KEVIN KELLER is a comical comic book, but it's not comical because of Kevin's sexual orientation. And then there's the whole Ginger Lopez/Nancy Woods thing in AWA...

I guess different people find humor in different things. Maybe to someone it's comical by virtue of the fact everything else we know about Betty says she isn't L/G, or maybe it's just matter-of-fact, depending on how you look at it... because not everything in even a classic Archie story is funny by default.

I responded because I thought you were debunking the idea that the panel could have any LBGT references. The chances are, it wasn't intended to have any, though the author might have considered that such an interpretation was possible

Out of context, from the point of view of finding something interesting or humorous in them, all I take from the panels is the possibility that Betty is expressing a sexual interest in the other young woman

I've been enjoying Josie and the Pussycats, so very sorry to see it end. I am glad that Audrey Mok has more work because I think she has a lovely style. I shall continue to follow Marguerite Bennett and look forward to her Sheena of the Jungle

Women (and even some men) can appreciate physical beauty in a detached way that has nothing to do with sexual attraction, because in general social conditioning tends to make them a lot less homophobic than men as a gender.

That's a perfectly rational explanation, but it's not very comical. The fun of taking it out of context is that we can explain it in whatever other ways we want, isn't it?

Latest issues of:
    Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur

Archie's Friends / Josie and the Pussycats #5
« on: April 11, 2017, 07:27:45 AM »
Caught up with this issue last night and enjoyed it a great deal. It captures some of the humour of the original She's Josie series as well as the fourth-wall breaking antics of the mid Sixties. Though there is a cliff-hanger ending which continues into the next issue, this is largely a self contained story about character. Melody is cute, Valerie is serious and Josie is learning. Audrey Mok's artwork reminds me of John Byrne's, but not in any bad way. I know this isn't selling very well, but that's a shame because there's a lot of love being put into this and it could appeal to a broad audience

I may be too cynical for my own good, but, my suspicion is that the photo has nothing to do with them dating, but is some sort of Sweeps prick-tease

From what I've been reading, Betty and Veronica have already "come out".  ;D

Please elaborate. Sounds like I would love to be reading what you've been reading!

That's so cool, Who made that? I'm going look on eBay. You should put in a comic frame & hang it on your wall. Amazon sells comic frames.

Thanks. It's by British artist Gary Parkin - not someone whose work I'm familiar with, but obviously I couldn't resist the subject matter. He seems to specialise in painting blank cover variants. I hadn't thought of hanging it on my wall, but you're right, I should
