  • Tuxedo Mark: I'm beginning to think AWA and CHAoS are cancelled, because Archie Comics sent me Jughead: The Hunger #1 as part of my AWA sub.

  • DeCarlo Rules: @TM - "They" is Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. Just him. HE's the writer of both AWA and ChAoS. It's HIS story. He only writes an issue when his muse inspires him. Plus he's kinda busy being the showrunner and one of the head writers for RIVERDALE, which ACP probably considers a little more important. And from Sacasa's POV, I know television work must pay a helluvalot better than writing comic books. Especially if they're comic books published by ACP. Could someone else write those horror comics? Sure, if ACP's Chief Creative Officer decided to assign the books to someone else. At that point sales would probably just nosedive anyway, so what's the point? Better to let other writers make up their own horror stories using ACP characters.

I'm sorry that there was no review last week. I was really busy. This week, I review two B&V stories from 1988: "Deliverance" and "Twisted Sitters!"

That's great, Fernando! :) Where, exactly, can the story be purchased, and is the digital format viewable on Kindle for PC or Nook for PC?

I forgot to mention this before, but chapter 14, "Dedication" (occurring in October), was posted a while ago.

Also, I posted chapter 15, "Social Justice Warriors", last night. The ending's vulgar, because the gang gets into a creative-cursing contest.  :P It's based on something similar that happened on my bus one day when I was in high school, though I have the girls way out-curse all of those guys.  :coolsmiley:

Some random thoughts:

The B&V story was hilarious! :2funny: These two do comedy really well. That reveal, though. :o

What's Cheryl's deal? She's making Josie think she's being stalked by Chuck. Is Cheryl developing feelings for Josie after Josie saved her from being raped and is trying to make sure that Josie doesn't "ride the Chuck Wagon"? Madelaine did say Cheryl's getting a love interest this season? Might Josie be it? (Cheryl referred to Josie as "my girl" in front of Chuck.) I'm not opposed, but I don't think deceiving and scaring Josie is the way to win her heart. Just tell her how you feel. What would the ship name be? Joryl? Chersie? The preview for next week's episode hints at a somewhat intimate moment between them.

Here are some random thoughts on the episodes:

Pussycat beatdown was awesome!

Madelaine Petsch is the best actor on this series, and Cheryl Blossom is the best character ever!

Cheryl ends up doing Betty a solid, even though her "dear cousin" had originally come to her house under the pretext of concern for her well-being (which Cheryl saw through).

The scenes between Cheryl and her mom were very good. In particular, the first one was heartbreaking. Sad Cheryl makes me cry.

Yay for Cheryl in short shorts. More, please.

Cheryl being high on Jingle Jangle was pretty funny.

So Veronica saves Cheryl from being raped, and Cheryl helps Betty out with some snooping. I think these three ladies are gonna become besties.

General Discussion / Re: Sears/Kmart

they have to pay staff to do nothing for hours on weekends

Huh?! Explain this, please.
It's simple:

Malls enforce the hours that businesses have to stay open.

Certain times of the day are infamously slow in malls, such as weekends after 6pm or so, some holidays, early mornings, etc. When I worked in a mall, Saturday after six was just DEAD- you only get business during the day.

Therefore, a business that has to stay open from 9 to 9 every single day has to pay staff to fill those twelve hours, even if a bunch of those hours aren't busy at all- the employees are thus drawn really thin for the times when it IS busy, and the stores basically blow money, because they're paying someone $/hour to sit around while no sales are made. My mom still works in a mall, and says there are days when you could roll a bowling ball down the halls and hit nobody. Yet every place is open.

I mean, yay, it's more hours for people who might need it, but it's a waste. Many business owners I know refuse to move in to malls directly because of this practice- paying staff for times when nobody's shopping is dumb.

Maybe it's different in Canada. Here, at a mall around an hour from my house, the food court has a Chick-fil-A, which refuses to open on Sundays. Any time that my mom and I visit that mall on a Sunday, that restaurant is closed, but everything else is open. That leads me to believe individual businesses can set their own hours.

Heck, now that I think about it, the Kmart that I used to work at (which is now closed) went through hour changes at one point, and I've seen other businesses in the mall post hours of operation signs.

General Discussion / Re: Sears/Kmart
« on: November 03, 2017, 10:00:52 AM »
Update: Sears has shut down all of its stores in Canada. That was fast- they'd closed down "select stores" in Canada earlier in the year, and have just decided to close up shop right before Christmas! Every store is a madhouse, and it's proving to be a disaster for Canadian malls, because most of them had JUST figured out what they're doing with all their abandoned Target locations! One of the malls it town had just renovated their old Target to have different store-space (converting a department store into a hallways with stores in it), and the West Edmonton Mall store is only NOW about to be filled with a few different things.

People are thinking the malls are gonna have to allow gyms to move in in order to survive, now.

I think malls are just gonna die out, period. They're such an outdated concept. The mall in my county has seen all four of its anchor stores close (including, yes, Sears and the Kmart that I used to work at) and only one take its place. If it wasn't for the movie theater, it'd probably be in much worse shape. There was even mold in the old JC Penney location, and it had spread throughout the mall, because various employees had complained of illness.

Eddie Lampert, the billionare hedge fund manager that orchestrated the merger of Sears and Kmart over a decade ago and now serves as its CEO (because no one else wanted the job), loaned the company $200,000,000 from one of his other companies in order to get it through the holiday shopping season. That loan comes due in April. Aaaaaand...they've already burned through it:

Here's a new list of store closings:

Just some random thoughts:

Betty actually likes Nancy Drew? That's a bit of an eyeroll moment, but it totally fits the version of the character that they're going with. Really, the whole bland/vanilla appearance that they put on Betty in this series is a bit too on the nose. I mean...she literally drinks "old-fashioned vanilla" milkshakes.

How can Cheryl be in three scenes but not have any lines? That, like, breaks the rules of awesomeness.

Pay attention in the town hall scene. When Fred's speaking, Hiram and Hermione are literally the only two people not looking at him. Wonder if that means anything.
