Hi there! I go by Justnobody online, and I'm a huge archie fan who got here from a tumblr friend! I've been into it for years now, I always sorta knew about it but never really picked up a digest until I read all of Afterlife With Archie in one sitting, hah. Looking forward to my time here!
Welcome to the boards, Coldsteel!

Ahoy, does anyone know the name of the story where Betty wears her hair down at the beach and all the boys fall in love with her? It was drawn by Al Hartley.
Betty & Me #38.  "Blondes Have More What?".  Al Hartley.  :smitten:

On or around March 30, 2015 I reached out to several members who used to be active on the boards, but had as of the time disappeared.  I heard from a couple folks that they wouldn't come back, but Zach and Captain Hero did return within a day or two.  I Believe Zach owns every Jughead comic, and of course we know Captain Hero has all but less than a half dozen of the published digests.  Zach posted for years before you joined.  I'm still befuddled why his Shoutbox post was received in such a negative manner, particularly now that I realize it was April 1st.  Anyways, water under the bridge I guess, but there's still an element of "institutional knowledge" that should be considered.

If Forsythe, Frank, or Gregg where to return with an irrelevant post, how should/would they be treated by current members?

Not trying to stir a pot, just trying to support members who contributed valueable content in the past.  When a known troll and multiple shills run wild here, but Zach gets slammed I get rankled.

Edit: B-ko/Biollante/Ghidra (etc.) is a woman.  A clever, capable, innovative and thoughtful writer regardless how "she" comes across on this board.  We don't always agree, but I respect her efforts and passion. She enjoys classic Archie and has photoshopped some fantastic covers, making them even funnier.

It wasn't received in a negative manner. At first. It was received in a confused manner, as in "What are you trying to say about Archie? How does this relate?" -- because new members come here hoping to learn something about Archie Comics, or at least what other people's opinions of them are. The answer turned out to be "nothing" -- and nothing about anything else either.

I don't believe it should be incumbent upon any new members to spend hours reading through old posts to try to form some contextual-frame-of-reference opinion about some past member's relative contributions before responding to them. People who haven't posted in a long time are strangers to anyone who joined since they were active.Should they get special treatment? No, they should be treated just like everyone else. That was my blind introduction to Zach Ziggster. My confusion over the linked video notwithstanding, had B-ko not jumped in there and started stirring the pot by slinging insults, I think it would have passed without much to-do.

I'm not going to apologize for disliking B-ko. I believe she's rude and obnoxious in her exchanges with people, and nothing you can tell me is going to change my opinion of what I read in her posts before blocking them. You only get to make a first impression once, but later impressions only reinforced my initial one. Some people simply seek antagonism on the internet and it seems like they live for it -- B-ko is one of those.
I disagree.  Learn the likes, interests, mores, etc. of any group before you join them. No need to apologize about B-ko.  Like who you like.

Context and perspective.  If this thread were the first post I saw from you I'd thought you were wackadoodle.  I know better as I've communicated with you, read multiple posts and know you have valueable stuff to contribute.

Of course I'm wrong, I'm not very bright or articulate, but I want to speak up for what I believe is fair and reasonable. I think when you join a forum you (one) needs to feel out what the sensibilities of that chat board are.

Edit:  to add:  I wouldn't necessarily  call someone out or demonize them on a comics message board without having some context as to who they are or why they're posting a particular thing.  I thought the message board was primarily geared to information, education, and entertainment.    It's still about comics I believe.   I like comics.

Actually, Hot Dog used to be Archie's dog before he was Jughead's. I recall a story like that, though I can't find it yet. Anyone else remember it?
PEP #224. "Father Knows Beast".  I haven't come across a reprint in several years.

QuoteHas there ever been Melody fashion pages?

Yes. I have been reading some old She's Josie comics and there are a few Melody Pinups/fashion pages.

I think I must have a more exacting definition of what a fashion page is, but it isn't this. There are plenty of pin-up pages. In my definition what makes a fashion page a fashion page is that it isn't a funny candid moment from their lives, or a gag joke setup... they're modeling, posing as if for a catalog, to show off their outfits. There isn't a joke to justify the page, or even any dialog balloons, 95% of the time. It's just about the girls looking good, and maybe, depending on the editor's whims, an interactive page where a reader might see their design get credit and be illustrated by a professional artist.

I guess nobody ever bothers doing image searches when they wonder about these things but me, so here are a couple that I found that are actual fashion pages. I didn't find many, though, which makes me think maybe the fashion pages weren't that common in JOSIE. At least, not like they were in B&V.

These are two from SHE'S JOSIE #4.

Apparently there were still a few fashion pages in later issues. Possibly from issue #46? (Just a guess, really.)

Not sure exactly where these came from. My guess would be some of those ARCHIE GIANT SERIES issues.

Couldn't find any better images of this page, Melody's "Punk Fashions".
I guess these are the kind of outfits Melody wore when they went out to see The Clash or The Sex Pistols or Black Flag or The Dead Kennedys play. I'm just going to roll with the theory that sure, she didn't blend and stuck out like a sore thumb, but nobody gave her a hard time, because... well, because she's Melody.

(She could have gotten some help from Jughead... I mean, Captain Thrash.)
I'm pretty certain Melody never went to a Black Flag gig, just as I'm certain "Captain Thrash" was never at an SSDecontrol show, though the timelines overlapped.  One of my biggest Jughead disappointments.    :P

Something I hadn't though about earlier, but maybe ACP should have made a better effort to accept outside advertising in their comics.  Surely there's some clever sales/marketing people that could have gotten them ads from businesses that want to sell to the Archie readership demo.  I'm sure ACP generates sales and subs through the in-house ads, but I'd imagine far less than if they were instead promoting candy, toys, movies, tween accessories, etc.

Aside from some experimentation with format options, I'd have allowed the pool of creators to actually control the content.  I think there was too much meddling from the top that left the artists and writers hamstrung.

:-\ :smiley6600:
Unless I'm also misunderstanding, you want Jughead #84. I think that's 1962, I can't log onto GCD for some reason to confirm.

I think that's correct, the May 1962 issue. The 6-page story you're referring to is "Electronically Yours" by Samm Schwartz, in which Dilton's new computerized mate selector matches Ethel up with Jughead. IIRC, Ethel's last name isn't actually mentioned in that story, and I'm not sure which story it was that established her last name, or if there was any variance in that before settling on Muggs. An unnamed girl who is clearly now identifiable as Ethel appeared earlier than that, but I'm not sure exactly where. That issue also contains another Schwartz United Girls Against Jughead story ("A-Picknicking We'll Go") which I'm not sure if was the very first of that series, but it's certainly one of the earliest. Writing credits on both stories seem to be uncertain.
She was Ethel Dinklehof in Jughead #230.  No idea why the name changed.

It was no one's fault the old forum died, but losing eleven years of threads makes the new forum feel second best. It is 2006 all over again, except without the unity, innocence and optimism.
I'm fairly certain some fault can be found.  We lost a great amount of info, plus contributing members like Frank, Forsythe, Captain Hero, Chuck, and Greg who are still involved in the hobby.

Yeah where did all these Archie historians go? Are they still interested in Archie? Are they posting somewhere else? Or is there just nothing to say now that ACP puts out so little Classic Archie.
Forsythe still contributes to the reprints and is credited. Greg is a head guy at GCD, Chuck is doing his thing(plus a blog), Captain Hero still reads, and Frank is still in comics, but I haven't communicated with him in nearly a year.

Where would I find Forsythe's name credited, Steve? Surely not in the digests (or their bigger brothers, the Giant Comics and 1000 Page Comics digest re-reprints), but is it mentioned somewhere in the small type on the indicia page of TP and HC collections? What actual name (I assume it's not actually Forsythe...) would I look for?

What actual service is he contributing to ACP? (Credits, story selection suggestions, guidance for where to find original stories, etc.) Does he get paid for this, or is he just volunteering his help?
The most recent I've seen is the "75 Years 75 Stories".  He contributes old stories that ACP doesn't have copies of and I don't know if he receives compensation.  I can PM you with his name if you'd like.
I don't understand why ACP doesn't have old copies stored somewhere. I also don't get why they don't keep track of which artist worked on a certain story (I have seen a few times "artist unknown" on those 1000 page comics). Really? they don't have all of that info written down somewhere?
I think archives weren't really a priority until the 70's when publishers understood what they were holding was potentially a financial boon to them.  Even Marvel was missing pages from early Iron Man in Tales Of Suspense for example. They had to use scanned pages from a comic for their reprints.   Same with daily strips and so forth.  It's odd to me, but the publishers didn't seem to value this stuff after the initial printing.  They were disposable comics aimed at kids and few cared.  Read it and Chuck it was the idea.  Thank goodness there were folks who treasured these books and preserved them for future generations.

What was in Classic Comics Library volumes #1 through 320? When was volume #321 published and by whom? Pictures are nice, and very helpful.

Interesting that all the stories are taken from early PEP and JACKPOT issues, since public domain scans of all those issues have been available for some time now at sites like Digital Comic Museum. If you really want to identify the source of individual stories, that's where I'd go to look.

Just for laughs, here's a good one from PEP #39 (1943).

?    ???

I don't see anything.

I think the phraseology you're looking for here is "I see nothing! I know nothing!!"  ;)
No.  The image shows up now. Love it!  I'm a huge Hogan's Heroes fan anyhoo.
