All About Archie / Re: Riverdale Episode 6

I have to admit, that kiss was pretty great;  My daughter has been waiting six weeks for it, so her reaction made it worthwhile!  She is a serious Bughead.  I don't think that kiss was completely out of the blue;  Jughead is an outsider and his home (or lack of one) life is pretty bad.  Betty has consistently shown him kindness and he has been somewhat protective of her for a while.  I can't imagine there are too many teenage boys who wouldn't want to kiss Betty...

The Fred/Hermoine thing is going to lead up to something much bigger, I am guessing it will blow up when Mr. Lodge comes to town. They have good chemistry and it's probably better for the adults to be involved in the steamier stuff than the kids.

Funny thing, I went to the library to check out the Archie titles and took out 'A Rock and Roll Romance'.  It was an alternate universe story where Valerie and Archie fall in love and marry, Veronica replaces her in the pussycats.  Betty and Trev also get together in that book, which was hinted at last week.  It is obvious someone is at least reading the comics...

All About Archie / Re: Riverdale Episode 4

I liked the episode as well,  I believe that the show is settling into a steadier pace now.  This was the first real Jughead episode we have had and they gave him a lot of background.  I enjoyed seeing Skeet Ulrich as Jughead's father, I think that was an interesting casting choice.

I just finished the new Archie (Mark Waid/Fiona Staples) trade paperback.  It certainly has a different feel, but I found it entertaining.  I also picked up the new Jughead trade from the library and have to say it was better. It was a lot more fun, with all sorts of fantasy sequences interweaving with the story.  'Slackbeard' was especially inspired.

Do they keep viewing figures for Netflix? I imagine a lot of people are watching it there.

Woolworth's had a great lunch counter, as did Kresge's (we had Kresge (same company) and Kmart until the 90's) The one in downtown Hamilton was straight out of the 1950's.  They had great burgers and fries.....Jughead would have been in heaven.  25 years later when I drive by the old building I still get a little sad.

How about the comic where Jughead dresses in drag to beat the summer heat and ends up in jail? Certainly not PC, but funny though.  Which is what comics are all about.  It is really impossible to look at these 50-60 year old comics through 21st century eyes critically.  The world was a different place, especially from the standards of acceptability.  Growing up in the 70's and 80's cultural and sexual sensitivity was really not something that was spoken about.  I just  enjoy the old stories and try not to analyze them too much.

I just finished watching season 1 of Daredevil; It is like watching the Frank Miller era comics come to life..

The Netflix Marvel programs have really been great.  My 80 year old father really enjoyed Luke Cage!  I have been watching Supergirl and just started a new one called 'The Mick' which is pretty funny.

In the 30 months or so since I became interested in Archie Comics, I don't think I've seen any digests in any grocery story I've been in. I've seen them at Barnes & Noble, Walmart, and just recently, Target, but those are the only places. No local drugstore franchises or convenience stories.

I saw them at Wegman's (western NY) when I crossed the border last week;  Up here in Canada Shopper's drug mart has them, as does a grocery store called Sobey's.   Sometimes 7-11 and Walmart always has them.  I think that there will always be a call for Archie comics as they are the only all ages, family friendly comic that people (parents) have come to trust.

The whole Target launch up here was a complete Fiasco.  They lasted about a year. They grossly misunderstood what consumers here would want (we wanted an exact copy of the US stores, pricing included).   Instead, we were treated to half empty shelves and inflated prices. The parent company gave no time for the operation to become profitable.

Thousands lost jobs and most of the stores just stand empty now.  The retail landscape in Canada is very sparse compared to America as it is.  Walmart is pretty much the only department store we have now. We used to have Zellers, Woolworth/Woolco, Towers, Eaton's, Robinson's...etc.  Retail as we know it has had its day I'm afraid.

Hey VintageJon!  :D   What/who are your favorite titles, artists, eras, etc.?  Welcome to the boards!.

Hi There,

Not a favourite era per se, but I have always enjoyed the 60's stories.  (which were reprinted several times over in the digests).  I bought the best of the 50's and 60's and treasure them.  You will have to forgive me, I have been away for a while from comics and I am catching up.  The new Betty and Veronica looks pretty interesting, as does the new Jughead title.  As for artists,  I still love the original work of Bob Montana, it is timeless and classic.  On the other end of the spectrun I think Francesco Francavilla is fantastic.

Are you watching RiverDale?

Yes I am watching Riverdale, my daughter has watched the first 2 episodes about 10 times each.  I am genuinely impressed by the show and I look forward to watching each week!

Welcome/Introductions / Thank you for having me!

Hi everyone,

I was lurking around the forum for a day or two before deciding to join up;  From what I have read it seems like a great group, friendly and free of the nonsense I sometimes see on other forums.

I am in Canada (southern Ontario) and have been reading Archie on and off for 30 some odd years.  Things have come full circle in a way;  My mother used to listen to the radio show, my sister and I read stacks of double digests when were growing up;  Now my teenage daughter and I are enjoying Riverdale together.  If that doesn't prove the timeless nature of these characters, I don't know what does!  My Mum and sister are sadly no longer with me, however it is comforting to still have the memories and to know there are some things that are still with us, more or less unchanged after all these years.

I have always had a soft spot for Betty, my daughter is hoping she will eventually end up with Jughead (who seems to be the favourite with her and her friends at school)!

Thank you for having me,

Vintage Jon
