General Discussion / My Pandora stations
February 23, 2017, 07:09:50 PM

I've added as many artists and songs as I could find that either or both of them have declared "cool".

Charlie's Angels Radio

Since my account was delete sadly we lost all previous posts aside from Riverdale Episode 4 - does anyone want me to remake a post from 1-3?

Why would the forum delete the threads just because your account was deleted?

And I actually saved copies of those threads on my hard drive. I'm wondering if Oldiesmann can reintegrate them into the forum.

Here are my thoughts:

Cheryl's a bitch to Veronica's mom and Veronica, but it turns out that she was right to be suspicious of Hermione.

LOL at Cheryl inviting herself to sit with Veronica at the drive-in. (And Cheryl sucking on that Twizzler / Red Vine was yummy.) I guess, for all of her talk about wanting Veronica to remember her place, she isn't ashamed to be seen hanging out with her, not even on the back of a pick-up truck.

I expected some kind of Cheryl/Veronica scene after Cheryl sent Kevin away for snacks, but nothing happened.

Why, why, WHY did Betty take the gun home with her?! (Fun fact: I wrote a fanfic back in 1999 in which Betty bought a gun and hid it in her dresser drawer, but at least that was somewhat justified - if ill-conceived.)

So Cheryl and Kevin definitely drive. Heck, Cheryl had TWO driving scenes in this episode. I guess the show really is saying they turned 16 over the summer before sophomore year. Did anyone here know any kids in that situation in high school?

So I guess Ms. Grundy is gone. I actually didn't mind the storyline, even though some people found it squicky. Then again, I ship Cybersix/Lori. Anyone remember "Cybersix"?

Jughead's a movie buff. This is consistent with his portrayal on "Archie's Weird Mysteries" - but broader. On that show, he was just into horror movies.

Betty keeps a diary. Does anyone know any teens today that keep handwritten diaries?

My son is 16 and he has friends with their licenses as sophomores. Like Kevin, they borrow their wheels from their parents.

They have their license at the beginning of their sophomore year?

Well, Jughead said in this episode that it's been only a week since Jason's body was found, so time is moving very slowly on this series. Also, Jason's body was found soon after the school year started.

Also, Jason was shown driving on July 4.

All About Archie / Re: Sliding timeline
February 14, 2017, 09:40:39 AM
Introduction:

For the past few years, I have done a sliding timeline post. Archie Comics seems to keep the main characters at around the same age (it varies here and there), so, logically, each year, the characters' birth dates are advanced by one year.

Usually, I post the new timeline on the night that the senior class at my old high school graduates, but I've decided to post it earlier this year, because I've decided to shift the timeline to the "Riverdale" universe. This timeline is the last one to deal with the comics (a transitional timeline), and the next one will be aligned to the "Riverdale" universe, since it seems "Riverdale" is currently the "true" Archieverse (at least, as far as exposure is concerned).

According to Wikipedia, there is 1 person born in 1899 verified to still be alive:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_oldest_living_people

The oldest living former U.S. President was born on June 12, 1924. The current Pope was born on December 17, 1936.

Taking into account only the people that are still alive today, there was 1 person in the world at the end of the 1800s, there were 3 people at the end of the 19th century, the oldest person at the end of the 1900s was 10, 1910s: 20, 1920s: 30, 1930s: 40, 1940s: 50, 1950s: 60, 1960s: 70, 1970s: 80, 1980s: 90, 1990s: 100, and 2000s: 110.

Needless to say, it'll be a while before we have to say the original Betty, Archie, and Jughead, introduced in Pep #22 in 1941, are dead.

For the purpose of this post, I make the assumption that the characters are graduating next year, aged 18 years old, so they were born in 2000. I also assume the summer stories that we see in the comics occur during the summer before senior year (there are at least two comic stories that establish this), and the school-year stories occur during senior year (at least one 1970s story establishes this). I know there's at least one story where they're explicitly high school juniors, and that's the position of the official Archie Comics site (in their character profiles), so, if anything, the assumptions in this post are too conservative.

What this post attempts to do is try to figure out the characters' perspective and frame of reference for viewing the world. This can also be useful for the Archie Comics writers when writing new stories.

As we enter a new cycle of Archie Comics stories, another shift occurs, and 1999 is lost; the characters never experienced it. Of course, I'm aware that people can become aware of things (music, movies, television series, video games, books, etc.) that came out before they were born, but they weren't there "as it happened", and thus these things hold no nostalgic value to them. Also, keep in mind that people generally don't remember things before the age of two (in this case, 2002).

In addition to updating the information, I have sorted it into rough chronological order as the characters would have experienced them (or, in the cases of pre-birth events, wouldn't have experienced them).

They were in ninth grade (freshman year) when junior Maren Sanchez was murdered at school by a fellow student for declining his prom invitation.

There is likely a gay-straight alliance at their school.

They were in tenth grade (sophomore year) when sophomore Dorothy Dutiel murdered her girlfriend, sophomore May Kieu, at school and then killed herself.

They were in tenth grade (sophomore year) when the Every Student Succeeds Act went into effect.

There are likely transgender students at their school.

They were 15 or 16 and out of school for the summer before eleventh grade (junior year) when recent high school graduate Ashley Doolittle was murdered by her ex-boyfriend for breaking up with him.

The freshmen and sophomores in their school were born in the 21st century.

They were in eleventh grade (junior year) when "Betty and Cheryl", my fanfic series portraying them as high school freshmen, came out.

Anyone have anything else?

This week, I'm reviewing a 2007 Betty and Veronica story called "Westward, Huh?".

One major thing about the identity-switch subplot that doesn't make sense is the fact that the host families should have received pictures of Betty and Veronica.

Anyone that still has old VHS tapes of the series, what are the various songs and artists that were played on the series (but removed for DVD)? I'd like to get a list going.

Also, I created a Sabrina Pandora station (with some Josie and Riverdale added):

It turns out that I can't review "Riverdale" at the moment, because the file format of the episodes is incompatible with the video editor that I use to watch episodes and take screen captures.

So I'm reviewing a Betty and Veronica story from 1990 called "Way Out West".

Betty Cooper's mom is creepy.

Not creepy, just a hardass. I'm glad that Betty finally stood up to her.

Josie and the Pussycats are jerks. Sheesh.

Well, Josie is. Mel and Val are just there at this point.

No Midge. Darn it, I wanted to see Moose beat people up! Now I'm going to have to wait until Betty finally snaps.

How are those related?

The Grundy/Archie subplot. Ugh. I know you had to get Archie at the lake to be connected to the mystery--but it really gave a blow to the character.

Yes, she probably did. :D

Cheryl Blossom was awesome as the alpha ....witch.

Yup, Cheryl is awesome. I think Camilla Mendes as Veronica stole the show, though (even my 76-year-old mom loves her). I love the moment where she confronted Cheryl at cheerleader tryouts, and you could tell Cheryl was intimidated by her. Good acting all around.

By the way, one of the trailers was cut in a way that insinuated both Betty and Veronica would go into the closet with Cheryl. ;)

Jughead, well, he narrated and didn't do much...and yet I wish he was more of a main character than Archie. And I like his hat.

I'm trying to make sense of Jughead's narration. The end of the episode had him narrating stuff that didn't even happen yet, such as the arrest that will come halfway through fifth period (which I'm guessing the next episode will actually show).

By the way, that will be Cheryl, judging by one of the trailers, which shows her being escorted by police. It's way too early for them to have caught the real killer, though.

But I guess Reggie is stuck with dumb jock friend if going by the pilot.

Yeah, Mr. Hot Cougar Ass didn't impress me. Also, the actor's way too old.

Just curious if anyone's actually reading this. Because it's gotten zero reviews and follows on FanFiction.Net and not too many views (most of which are on the first chapter). Oddly, this is in stark contract to my other two Betty fics from previous years, each of which has racked up over 4,000 views and some reviews and follows (even though they're single-chapter fics).

This is a bit late, but I've written up a history of Archie comics on radio, TV, and film and have taken a look at the actors on "Riverdale".
