All About Archie / Re: The Jughead/Veronica Feud

Thanks for posting the other part. Jughead turned Jellybean into a little brat, almost gave Leroy a run for his money! I agree that usually we can't count on continuity to justify payback like in this case but frustratingly the writers sometimes do.  :P

Sometimes Jughead's proxies do his work without him meaning them to...

Thanks De, I try.  :)

Oh yeah that came through!

I would never though go out and tell a fan of Archie Comics or a perspective fan that they are silly for even thinking to like the show.

I didn't say anyone was silly for liking Afterlife, I said I liked it okay myself.

You make some good points, daren, but I don't care what the critics say.  Even if they heap what you think is too much praise on the book, it doesn't mean it's overrated in my eyes.  I love it and I'm really surprised I do.  I hate horror movies, and I've never read horror books or comics.  So at least in my opinion, the book has a lot going for it to keep me interested

That's cool, youre probably just better at ignoring hype than me, that's why Archie can be one of your favorite characters and not one of mine.

You are very considerate, Daren. I, however, have put all my negative opinions about the show on other people's threads  ;D ;D

You're perfectly right to, this is an Archie discussion forum not a shower-Archie-with-praise forum.

For anyone interested the San Diego Comic Con's showing the Riverdale pilot on July 23. http://deadline.com/2016/06/warner-bros-tv-comic-con-schedule-riverdale-powerless-people-of-earth-supergirl-gotham-1201780010/

This is a continuation of Kurenai24's thread in All About Archie "Your Archie Fancast" to talk about the castings and future castings for the Riverdale show and the show in general, I'm making a new thread for it because I liked hers but I don't want to put all my negative opinions in her thread or in the other Riverdale show threads.

First this:

Well now we know how the show ends. Or do we?

This looks cute, Holly G has a new book people can get for five dollars a month at patreon about two friends who decide to eat their way through Disneyland.

https://www.patreon.com/sweetadventures?ty=h

Unfortunately it looks like they are creating some YA novel (based on the Patreon only samples) and not a comic. I think Holly G just drew that image for a promo or cover.

Well that sucks, it was nice art.  :(

Well B for both of them but I don't think she's ever been pretty.

QuoteThat belongs in the "Betty is Crazy Collection" too.

I was going to put it there but it didn't do Archie justice.

QuotePoor Veronica, being taken advantage of like that!

Yeah.  :buck2:  It's her choice and everyone else's but that was so skeevy I don't care. Reggie's was even meaner.

For some reason the board is giving me grief about nothing being in the body of my post, that's why I had to cut out everything but those sentences, maybe Archie is controlling it through brainwaves or something but here's another one anyway.

:o   Now even little Archie is a ****, when will it end?

I have a complex about reading superhero stuff in public that I don't have about Archie, maybe Im just paranoid about looking like a loser fanboy and people associsate superhero comics with that instead of Archie stuff. And everyone knows superhero comics suck up all your time and money because of all the continuities so in additioin to looking like a loser you look like a loser in hock to Marvel and Image...I know it's stupid, everyone should just read what they want.  :)
Interesting and ironic. I said something similar upthread and I got smited and savaged for it.  >:(

I guess it proves and validates what I said earlier.  ;D

And yet hundreds of thousands of people spend millions of dollars seeing Batman and Avengers movies. And let's not forget Star Wars. But if you READ it instead of see it on a theater screen (or stream it on your computer) then you're a LOSER. Oh yeah, clearly the moviegoer is the owner of superior genomes.

I dont know how I missed these posts earlier but let me explain I don't think reading superhero comics is anything to be ashamed of and I still do it sometimes. Fanboy is one of those words that has a way of ringing in your head you so I'm paranoid but like I said that's stupid. Superhero stories are awesome, the greatest mix of adventure, humor, drama, romance and sometimes social commentary, yeah, that's why they're clogging up the movie theaters now, and I like comics better than watching movies, reading and looking at art is better for your mind than zoning in front of some screen (not that I don't do that too). It was reading comics that made me try to learn to draw, I bet a lot of other fans would say that too, the only thing movies ever really made me accomplish is eating corn chips.  :P  Maybe comics cost money but you can always sell or donate them or borrow them from the library.

Here's a cartoon I found by accident on www.GoComics.com (Great for the discovery of new comic strips -- if you were stuck in the hospital for a month, you might have time to familiarize yourself with all of them.)

This one's from a strip called SCENES FROM A MULTIVERSE.

Here's another that's more typically my sense of humor from OFF THE MARK.

Here's another goodie... SAVAGE CHICKENS.

Why am I not getting the last one?

Lol, I've seen that one before and I inferred that Jughead was gay though. I mean, Veronica doesn't exactly have a working gaydar.

Okay looking at this picture again I think you might be right, my gaydar doesn't work either!

Archie is so confusing with its off/on continuity. What a cute story though, I like that Jughead didn't just yell at her to get out (not that he could, with all the time he spends at her house) and his parents tried to be nice about it too.

My opinions:

JUGHEAD: A) The woman-hating, somewhat-vicious schemer of the old days- constantly belittled and insulted women; B) The Jughead seen in the NUMEROUS "Jughead gets a girl" storylines (Joanie & Debbie, Anita Chavita, Sandy Sanchez, etc.); C) The anti-romance character who can still hang out with women (such as his friendship with Betty).

I prefer "C"- he fits in better with the rest of the gang, and Jughead/Betty is one of the more-fun character interactions out there.

QuoteREGGIE MANTLE: A) Outright villain whom just about everyone hates; B) Jerk With a Heart of Gold, who still hangs out with the gang.
I can waver on this one. He interacts well with the rest of the gang, so they should at least tolerate him. But "A" is SO MUCH BETTER FOR SOME STORIES.

Quote
BETTY COOPER: A) The scheming, somewhat-dim loser ('40s & '50s); B) The All-Around Girl-Next-Door Nice Girl Tomboy (most eras)
Yeah, I don't really care for most of the "A" Betty, even if the older strips were usually funnier. She's a bit too manic and insane.

Yep. (I might like Betty's stalking except for my personal baggage though, I know there's nothing wrong with it because it's only "unreal" stalking)

Quote
ARCHIE: A) The scheming bastard of the 1940s; B) The befuddled, clumsy loser of most other eras; C) The all-around nice guy.I like B. Archie should CONSTANTLY be scheming, and not be the milquetoast he later became. But "C" is going too far. Earlier eras of Archie are a bit too unsympathetic, though.

Okay I looked at the free '40s stories (thanks nuageo) and I guess I was wrong, Archie was a schemer in the '40s...but he was also a befuddled clumsy loser. Kind of sucked all around.
Quote
VERONICA: A) Straight-up selfish villainess ('40s & Mark Waid Reboot); B) The Jerk with a Heart of Gold character (mostly seen in and after the '60s); C) The nicer, more down-to-earth one of the '90s-2000s era (where her major conflicts are things like figuring out which charity to pursue).

"B"- Ronnie can thus hang out with the group, but carries a nasty edge that gets commented upon. The later version seems WAY too nice most of the time (she's basically a nice character who hates Jughead- not exactly what made people like Veronica to begin with).

No her niceness must be what made people like Veronica, she was nice in almost all the '40s comics I read, up to about 1946 when the free stories end, and the '40s is when she started getting popular. She was even nicer than she is in the '90s-2000s. I mean she sometimes got angry at Archie for nothing or catfought with Betty but ALL the girls in '40s Archie are like that. I think people liked her because she was a high society sex bomb, and she was a flirty tease but nice. It seems like most fans now who prefer Veronica also seem to prefer her not too mean unless they're into S&M or something. I like her nice or mean but I always like villains, most people don't. And '90s-2000s Veronica is still selfish, spoiled, overspending, rude, and often mean, just not as much as in the '70s, she's still full of flaws.

Quote
CHERYL BLOSSOM: A) The super-selfish and obnoxious villain ('80s & her return); B) Veronica-Lite "Actually deep-down really nice" character (from her solo book).

"A"- I find the "B" version to be ridiculous, as we ALREADY HAVE THAT EXACT CHARACTER. Cheryl in her own book essentially turned into Veronica II, but with more of a "Star-Seeking" thing.

I half agree, I like her but she's redundant and as long as her home base is Riverdale she's always going to be the Riddler to Veronica's Joker but the fans are going to get attached to any villain who's around long enough and will want to see them get a nice side. That's probably what happened to Reggie because is he ever a **** in the '40s, no friendship or redeeming qualities yet and he only shows up now and then. They should probably put Cheryl in another town, maybe she can become Sabrina's bff or something, that way she won't seem so much like a copy and can still visit Riverdale for some stories.

Whatever the right meaning of tomboy is, I never thought it was a slur. It seems like girls are proud to call themselves tomboys or am I wrong?

I'm starting to think the delays are on purpose. Roberto said last year he was the holdup and I guess he was right, I thought maybe he was taking the fall so ACP wouldn't look bad but no, they've been putting out their other books on time this past year. Unless the delays are Francesco's, but if they're Roberto's why are they happening at all. Story and dialogue as simple and short as Afterlife's shouldn't take that long to write even if he has other things going on. I'm not saying that means it sucks, even though it is overrated I still like it okay and it's better than Life With Archie which was more complex and ambitious, but you would think LWA would be the book with delays, it must have been harder to write, instead it's Afterlife? I can't think of any reason why that would be unless it IS on purpose.

Logically I would think it would be the artist (Francesco) who would be the cause of delays because it takes longer to draw.

He can't even BEGIN to draw until he gets a script though. Plus he's got to draw other things to in order to earn a living and to pay the rent, and it's hard to schedule his time when he can't know when to expect an AWA script with any regularity. So there is that logic as well.

I agree with Daren, it's not a bad book but it's overrated. Paul Kupperberg had been scripting comics for decades, so despite whatever complicated plot threads had to be woven into LWA, he was a professional who knew how to make a deadline, and didn't have other commitments to television writing, either. For Aguirre-Sacasa, comics comes a distant second to his TV work (that's how HE pays the rent).

It's funny.  Every time I start to think it's overrated, they FINALLY put out a new issue and I start thinking it's the best thing they've published in many years again.

Yeah and I bet a lot of other fans think the same thing. They like it about as much as Life With Archie when it had been out for nine issues or so. If Afterlife had come out every six weeks or two months ever since it started it would have more mileage and wouldn't seem as fresh,  people would be more disillusioned with it the way they were with Life With Archie by the time it had done three years of close spaced issues. By delaying issues ACP or Roberto has kept the fans talking about Archie and wanting it, except for a few people who got disgusted and left but they're in the minority. And look when we got the latest issue, right when we find out if the tv show would happen. Now that we have THAT to talk about and look forward to maybe we'll suddenly see Afterlife coming out more regularly, or maybe they'll hedge their bets in case the show bombs, either way I think there's more here than meets the eye. I was wrong when I said they should get replacement writers, that would probably defeat the whole purpose.

If you ever look at the critical reviews you'll see it's overrated, I looked at some now and the characterization and subplots are actually called "genius" in one, even worse a lot of them praise Afterlife by insulting classic Archie (which a lot of these critics seem to be unfamiliar with, probably pulling their facts from Wikipedia). And a few years ago before I started reading the digests I probably would have been one of those dorks. Anyway nothing turns me off more than overhype so when people call a well-done Archie take on zombie soaps "genius" it's not easy to like it as much as I otherwise might.
