It seem like they got rid of Ethel,  she hasn't been in the Archie reboot or the Jughead reboot. Even the show hasn't casted an actress for Ethel.

That's terrible!

If you change the art style, there's probably no point in Ethel existing any more. Her only function as a character was to be the one who wasn't pretty like the other girls, an awkward ugly duckling who chased Jughead relentlessly and was sort of his nemesis. I mean, let's face it, those were her only real defining characteristics.

But it really doesn't matter now, if Erica Henderson's drawing JUGHEAD. Now everybody's ugly looking, even the girls who are supposed to be pretty, like Betty. Makes it kind of difficult to get the point across through the artwork that Ethel is supposed to be significantly less attractive than most of the other girls.

What was the name of a character we were talking about in the old forum, a boy that was Betty's love interest for a few issues? I think someone mentioned he was a reporter?

Dexter Howard, WPBJ Channel 10 news photographer? From BETTY AND ME #197-200?

Tomoko & Akira for Asians (pre-dating Kumi)

Which issues do these characters appear in?

Tomoko Yoshida first appeared back in 1991 in the semi-obscure ACP giveaway comic, ARCHIE AND HIS PALS IN... THE PEER HELPING PROGRAM.
(As seen here on the cover, seated next to Jughead.)

After that, she didn't reappear until BETTY #150 (Nov. 2005), after which she started appearing (mostly in B&V stories) with more frequency for a year or two... then faded back into obscurity. She still turned up on occasion, even a couple of years back, but there are less and less opportunities for her to do anything meaningful in the stories as time goes on... shrinking panel space at ACP.

Here's a couple of lists...

Maybe I'm the only one who feels like this, but I hate Archie 1 and Archie 3000. I'd prefer modern Archie, you know, mostly our time...? :) Dinos and flying cars just ain't my gig, you know...? :)

Hey, it's only 12 pages, SAGG. If I can put up with that much Little Archie in FIVE different digests, you can certainly sacrifice the 12 pages in a single digest. (To say nothing of when my regular Sabrina reprints get replaced by -UGH!- "The Animated Series"...  >:( )

But more to the point here, how do you feel about not having a NEW story in the digest?

Patty Pacer and Gerta Gravel (girls' team coaches/gym teachers)
That's "Greta Grappler"

Oh, right. Mixed her up with the Dick Tracy character "Gertie Gravel". There was also at least one other Archie story where the name "Greta Grappler" was used for the name of a female wrestler. Don't know if there was any connection, or similar appearance, between the two.

WORLD OF ARCHIE JUMBO COMICS DIGEST #60

Take a trip to the Middle Ages with Archie! A snooze on the beach turns into an adventure in history. As it turns out, being a teenager wasn't that much different centuries ago! Well... minus the fact that a sports competition featured horses... and swords... and was definitely a lot more dangerous! Get ready to get Medieval with Archie and the gang in "A Knight to Remember," the entertaining lead story to this JUMBO-sized comics digest!

Script: George Gladir
Art:  Jeff Shultz
Cover: Fernando Ruiz, Bob Smith, Rosario "Tito" Peña
Ship Date: 6/8
On Sale Date: 6/22
256-page, full color comic
$6.99 U.S.

AND it's not a "new" lead story, it's an "entertaining" lead story. Scripted by a writer who is no longer among us, and drawn by an artist whose last new work for ACP appeared more than 6 months ago. GCD lists at least a couple of stories by Gladir titled "A Knight To Remember"... I wonder which one this is?

Of course, that full-page ad still appearing in the digests does say "NOW featuring NEW stories in every Comics Double Digest!" ...so I guess, technically, a Jumbo or Annual digest isn't a Double Digest... !  >:(

OK... so now we're down from 240 pages of new stories 'In The Traditional Archie Style' to 235 pages per year (so far) ...

There better be special sections in there for LIFE WITH ARCHIE, ARCHIE 1, and FROM THE VAULT.  :tickedoff:

I have the issue of 'Back Issue' in which there's a lengthy history of the MLJ heroes, I learned a lot.

I'll check out those links, thanks!

This is the one issue you need (if you haven't got already). Complete index of all Golden Age MLJ superheroes, by series (PEP, ZIP, JACKPOT, BLUE RIBBON, etc.) AND by character name.

I was wondering if we'd ever see streaky again — guess he jumped ship ... :2funny:

Who knew there was any X-Kryptonite hanging around Riverdale? I thought that was only a byproduct of Kara Zor-El's failed experiments to neutralize ordinary Green K. She should have known better than to mix kryptonite with catnip.

Amisha's episode of TMLoAA should still appear whenever B&VDD 243 comes out, since that month's solicitations also contained the solicitation for Fernando Ruiz' last story in Archie Double Digest (he didn't know it at the time he got the assignment, only after he turned it in). That means Dan Parent's story should also have been written and drawn before any edicts to limit new stories to only 5 pages were decided upon. (Dan's been writing stories for Archie for more than 20 years, so I doubt he's just going to suddenly "run out of steam".)

I'm hoping that they're simply skipping a month because whatever the subject of the next episode's story is (which would feature either Archie and Betty, or Archie and Veronica), it didn't fit with the "Summer Annual" theme, and the editor felt they needed a "summer fun" story to match the cover and season.

At least, I HOPE that's all it is. It's only 3 more episodes to finish off this series which would then allow ACP to collect it into trade paperback - or more likely now, a digital exclusive - at some point in the future (which seems like a small investment of extra pages to make against future potential earnings). If money at ACP is SO tight right now that they can't even afford to spring for the cost of 15 or so additional pages, then there's probably little hope that the company will be in business a year or two from now.

I'm really excited about this book! I'm hoping to talk to the folks involved on the podcast when it comes out. Both of the writers have a long history with Archie, I'm sure that they're going to do a great job.

Me TOO!! Some of the material has probably appeared in past issues of ALTER EGO and BACK ISSUE, published by TwoMorrows (I know, because up until now, I've been using those previous issues to as reference guides to navigate the public domain scans of early MLJ comics on The Digital Comic Museum website.)

But I know Rik Offenberger in particular was responsible for setting up The Mighty Crusaders Network website, which has the virtual online Who's Who of the MLJ/Mighty Comics/Archie superheroes universe. And of course Paul Castiglia has been working for ACP since at least the early 1990s, and knows everything there is to know about the company and its history.

So in the meantime, while you're waiting for August 2016 and the book to come out, might I suggest that you follow the two links I've provided above, Jonathan. Plenty of great reading about the Mighty Crusaders and Golden Age MLJ superheroes to be found on those links. I know they've both been a great help to me, and hey! Where else but at DCM can you actually READ all those Golden Age superheroes' adventures? (Oh, and Archie, Suzie, Ginger, and Wilbur... even Katy Keene and Super Duck.)

On a fateful trip to the beach, Betty and Veronica accidentally release a genie from her bottle, and she's willing to grant them three wishes. Will they get everything they want? THIS from the ACP solicitations for June... Y'know, theoretically, this should be featuring Part 8 of "The Many Loves of Archie Andrews" as the new lead story. The previous issue, #243 would have been (and should still be) the episode featuring Archie with Amisha Mehta (swapped in the solicitations from issue 242, which - as published - featured Ginger Lopez [or at least Cinnamon Lopez, Ginger's cat] which was originally supposed to follow Amisha's episode, and had been slated for issue 243). That would have brought us up to episode #7 (out of the 10 chapters originally projected). As a reminder, each episode of "The Many Loves of Archie Andrews" (apart from the first and last ones) was supposed to feature ONE of the 8 girls who had nominated Archie for the "Boyfriend of the Year Award". With Amisha's chapter, that would have covered all the other girls except Betty Cooper and Veronica Lodge, and left a final episode to wrap everything up. So, to reiterate, there should still be an episode forthcoming featuring Betty, another featuring Veronica, and a final episode to make a total of 10 episodes all together (going by what Dan Parent himself told me). But I don't know... the above digest doesn't sound like it's part of that series, and it makes no mention of the overall title, so I wonder now... because Fernando told us that all new stories in the digests are going to be limited to 5 pages (where "The Many Loves..." have typically all been 10 to 12 page stories) if they're not just abandoning the series now.

I'm pretty NOT happy about it.  >:(   :tickedoff: :knuppel2:
