All About Archie / Re: Archie's Dating Life

So Archie Andrews has dated just about every girl in Riverdale and the surrounding counties, but has there ever been a story where he has gone out on a date with Ethel? I don't seem to recall ever reading something like that before.
I think he has, or was that her with Reggie, who actually liked it? I know Archie took her out during the Prom Showdown story, but he (surprise) treats her miserably, leaving her to find Betty and Ronica...

I still can't quite believe I'm reading that Ruiz, Gisele, and several of the other current Classic Archie artists are no longer at Archie Comics. It still hasn't really hit me yet... :(

It's a drag for sure.  I really enjoy the reboots but I hold out hope that a place will be made for more classic stuff in the future.

Man, I don't know. Goldwater was pretty brutal on everything the company published before he got there in 2009 in that article you linked. He practically disowns it, and in the process gives classic Archie creators a backhand slap in the face. Pretty much grabs the lion's share of the credit for KEVIN KELLER for himself in the process, too.
That sounds an awful like what Stan Lee did, taking credit for creating the Classic Marvel superhero characters in the early 60's and leaving Jack Kirby in the dust....

DEFINITELY a great Classic Archie story, PTF! :) I could see any of the great Archie artists doing this. And Reggie, THAT is the reason why the girls will NEVER prefer you over Archie: Dishonesty. Yet, ol' Carrot Top still has that annoying habit of the Roving Eye...

Harper Lodge turned him down for Reggie.
Yeah, and poor, poor Archie still has a gazillion girls who are either after him, or that he's after. The one story I liked where Archie actually and REALLY was shot down was the one recent story where two New Kid (I don't recall who they were, please help me) girls conspired to get just about every girl in Riverdale to really give Archie H-E- double hockey sticks when he asked them out for dates to finish out his "list" because he ignored Betty being available for a date near the end of summer. Turns out that after he seemingly was beaten down, Betty wanted to go out with some other guy, and was dating other guys as well to finish out HER list! All of that was for nothing! No one really learned anything, much less Archie! Betty was no better! Why in the WORLD do any of The Triangle want to have boy/girlfriends if they want to Play the Field, too?
Archie #658 "Dating Drama" — Chloe Mancuso & Bobbi (both on the student paper w/Betty) were the ringleaders
That's it. Thanks. :)

That's what I love about Dan Parent Archie stories. He loves to take him down a peg, and make him the butt of the joke. In this case puncturing Archie's rep as a player.

The difference between Archie and Betty here is that Archie is really acting like an a-hole. He's got the rest of the summer to make a "quota" for dating, trying to top himself by dating as many girls as he can. He puts Betty on the shelf as usual. She's the always-reliable backup, and he figures she'll be at his beck and call when summer ends and they get back to school. The joke's on him, as Betty figures she's not going to wait on him to ask her out, but date some different guys before going back to school. It's not like she's trying to set some kind of record for the most dates. That's just total jerk behavior on Archie's part, and Betty's friends call him on it.
This goes back to my theory about Betty seeing different guys primarily because she doesn't want to be depicted as a pining Archie-only girl, unlike her Crazy Betty days. If Archie stunningly suddenly decided to ask Betty to go steady, she'd drop every other guy in a New York Second...

Again Rebirth is not a reboot it's more or less a relaunch with added elements that were in the pre-52 universe
What's the difference, other than this so-called added element(s), which were apparently already there before, and shouldn't have been taken out in the first place? It seems to me that it's just switching around stuff, and throwing in what was already there, saying it's different now...

characters costumes tend to evolve over time and Harley Quinn's Original costume doesn't lend itself well to Live Action...plus the jester costume just comes off as a bit too goofy now a days

Yes. And I tend to lose interest when they change things about a character that were part of that character's initial attraction for me. It sucks that there's no longer any room for the "comic" in comic books.  They were more entertaining when they took themselves less seriously.

I'm not saying that but if everything stayed the same we'd get bored eventually....this is a character that wasn't even meant to last and the only reason her comic book took off like it did is because they didn't stick so close to the animated series where she was nothing more than the joker's goofy sidekick

they took chances with her and obviously it paid off

I suppose I seem to imply that I'm singling the character of Harley out as an example of the bad sort of change in comics. That really isn't particularly the case, as in this specific example it's DC Comics in general that's gone off the rails. I just can't seem to enjoy any of that company's mainstream universe titles the way I once did about a decade ago. I guess Batman and Harley were really the only things left that were selling, which is why all the "rebirthing" is happening all over again -- DC's sales across the board having plunged drastically since the rebooted "New 52" of five years ago. That tends to make Harley Quinn look like more of a success than she really is, when really all we're talking about is less of a failure, in relative terms.
All of this rebooting (Marvel included) has gotten on my nerves. Because of their desire to increase sales, they keep reinventing their characters every few years or so. I'd wish they'd settle with one origin, and leave it at that...

American comic books have been rebooting to fit changing times, as well as competition from video games, ebooks, and Japanese Manga.
True, but not every few years on the same characters. DC (and Marvel) has had, what, New 52, and Rebirth, all within a span of five years? I've never recalled this much frequency in tearing up things and rebuilding. Crisis on Infinite Earths really redefined superhero storytelling to me. DC should have left it at that. Stick with the Tried and True. Constantly changing and reimagining to me means desperation and impatience....

But even still, Archie plays it off. The boy gets off too easily WAY too much... ::)

Or the guys merely by looking in her direction. Or by merely thinking about doing it... :2funny:
