Yeah Gisele is obviously heavily inspired by Josie and the Pussycats. I wish she would do a more musical themed comic about a girl band. Do the Magic Chicks form a band?

I probably will eventually. If it's not with Zii, it'll be with a new creation more than likely. I won't lie, I would've enjoyed doing interiors on Josie, but it wasn't in the cards. In regards to SuperTeen Betty, I did get to draw her 2 more times in commissions since I did that quick sketch. She's pretty fun to draw. Since I don't know how to attach images here, here are links to my tweets:

(The second one is less on model, but it wasn't requested to be, so I took some liberties)

Archie Meets Ramones is not about a girl band but at least it's about music, which I enjoy. I'm also working on another project that has some music in it. It should be announced fairly soon. :)

This could be the best interpretation of Sabrina I've ever seen. Give Gisele her own Sabrina title!

Thanks, HarryLuceyFan!
I wouldn't say no to working on more Sabrina AND Josie & the Pussycats. They have my number. They just have to call. :)

* Funny: Gisele's at the Archie group of tables, yet most of her stuff is themed towards Menage A 3, which is TOTALLY not going for the same target audience :) . My brother is a big MA3 reader, and even jumped in with a question. She drew some nice sketches in the books I got from her, too. And she did eventually get to meet T. Campbell, her Penny & Aggie co-creator, after the strip had finally ended.

I had all of the work I did for Archie & more on display. I just haven't done that much for Archie. The little I've done is liked but I couldn't stand there with barely nothing at my table, so yeah, I'm gonna push my own work as well as the Archie work. I tried my best to keep the Ma3 stuff up high, and properly rated, so kids wouldn't get to it. :)

I find it weird too and it would bug the heck out of me to never hear a word again (it's not polite/good business practice). It was brave that you insisted, everyone else who was asked/volunteered just kind of let it go with a shrug (and then blogged about it later on).

It's so sad they went with that manga route (it was bad imo sorry lol) and not with anyone else. I mean, yeah in 2006 it was the hot thing for American companies to try to go into manga, but most if not all of it failed miserably because they didn't understand that manga isn't just popular because how it is drawn. Like, if you just draw everything in manga style doesn't mean it will be popular/have a larger audience without having a good story, good writing, etc. as well.

I can't say that this was the case to be sure, but the person that had approached me to do these samples eventually left Archie to go work at Marvel, so it's possible that when they got the samples in from everyone, he left around the same time, and maybe who ended up in charge of this had too much going on (maybe even lost some contacts?) and that's why this happened. Again, I'm not sure here.

When I did these samples in 2006 (along with others) the "manga-style" Josie was actually going on. I think they were trying to move away from it as I don't think it was doing quite well (the reason they requested samples from a few people.) Those 3 pages I did were based on a script that was already written. I had never seen the pages though of the manga version. I did end up seeing it one day. Here is the same script but in their "manga" style:

I agree with you that "manga" is about more than art, it's about an storytelling style as well. In any case, they made an effort, and because it didn't work, they sort of decided "manga" was a dead end. I think it could've possibly worked if done slightly different. It wasn't all bad, just not good enough to compete with what was out there at the time.

I've been kind of collecting rejected artists/writers/etc who wanted to draw 'Josie' stories and sent their samples in on my blog. Most of the artists/writers say they never heard from Archie Comics about their samples/ideas. Some of these artists are now pretty well-known and have successful comic series of their own.

It's always been kind of odd to me that they don't do more 'Josie' stuff considering most people I talk to remember more about 'Josie' than they do 'Archie.' (Thanks to the cartoon re-runs on Boomerang/the old Cartoon Network.) But considering how many times in the past they tried to re-start the series (2000's, the 'manga') maybe it just doesn't sell well enough in comic book form??

But it was very nice to see that short story drawn by Gisele.  :)

Thanks, CAPalace!

If I hadn't kept bugging them to get comments on my pages back in 2006, I don't think I would have gotten any feedback myself. I insisted for feedback 'cause I thought it was weird to be asked, and then ignored. In the end, they didn't care for the result, which is fine, BUT it seems they weren't happy with the results of others too 'cause nothing happened with the property since. When I did the samples, they were trying out this manga style which didn't last very long.

And yeah, I grew up on Josie more than Archie. Like, in my eyes, Josie was bigger.

Looking at those old pencils and these newer ones from that digest last year...

It's quite the change!

That story was great, and so was the one Sabrina story you got to do (not counting her appearance in ARCHIE). I'm sorry you never got to do more. I really loved the way those turned out.

Thanks! Since I knew this was going in the digests (and would probably be a one time thing,) I tried my best to make it in the classic style. Left to my own devices, on a run I can call my own, I'd tweak it a bit, but it would still have that DeCarlo/Archie house style feel.

That's actually 10 years old now (2006 I think.) I would draw it differently today for sure.
Archie wanted to try something different art wise with Josie, sort of like they are doing now with their main title, and I was asked to draw sample pages. I tried something different (as asked.) It's probably a good thing they didn't go for it as I'm cringing a bit looking at this now.
In any case, whether I like what I did here or not, Josie & the Pussycats IS the property I have interest in over at Archie.
I finally got my chance to do a short story in a digest about a year ago now. I would've like to have done more for the property, and done my way, but it's not in the cards, I'm afraid. At least it's one item off the bucket list now.

Gisele, your artwork for ACP is very recognizable.  When I first saw Reversedale, the first thing I thought of was 'that's the one that did Penny & Aggie, Gisele'.  ;)

Hehe, thanks. Yeah, around the end of my run on Penny & Aggie (before Jason Waltrip took over,) my art started to settled down into what some would say is my style (and what you would've seen in the Reversedale issue.) I really experimented with my art on Penny & Aggie. I tend to not do that as much these days. I try to be more consistent for the reader's sake. :)

This thread is for keeping track of which ex Archie artists are doing what now.
GISELE LAGACE      Eerie Cuties

I assume you put Eerie Cuties here 'cause of rating, but to be more clear, I was drawing Eerie Cuties way before I ever drew anything for Archie. Saying it's something I'm doing now is not really accurate (plus, the updates that are going up right now are actually drawn by Fernando.) I don't see myself as an ex Archie artist. I simply didn't do enough work for them to say that they mattered to how much money I made in a year. Them not hiring me makes no difference to me money wise. Any time I did work for them was because I thought it would be fun, and I enjoy the property (especially Josie & Sabrina.) I think it's important that people get that 'cause I'm not suffering money wise by any means because Archie isn't giving me work. At most, I got/accepted one story to two a year at Archie. It was never enough for me to consider it regular work. Others have been more affected than me, and it pains me to see this happen. I hope all of them are able to find other work, and enough of it so that if Archie comes back to them, they can be a little more like me, and accept the gig 'cause they WANT to VS because they HAVE to in order to pay the bills.

Menage a 3 (rated R) and Sticky Dilly Buns are my current main gigs (Ma3 I started years before I ever did anything at Archie,) and I have another one in the works. Eerie Cuties/Magick Chicks will keep going with the help of friends like Fernando & Dan.

Honestly, I'm in a good place and have nothing to complain about. Sure, I'd love my chance to have a run on Josie & the Pussycats, but I don't run that company, so I don't call the shots.

I feel they must have slacked off quite a bit in the new rebooted series with trying to have a similar look between the artists that have done these books. With each artist change there seems to be a drastic change in the art style some good and some bad in my opinion. So it is either because they haven't developed that character model yet for the reboot or they just don't care anymore.

I think the people that followed Fiona tried to copy her a bit but all & all, I think character models are out the window for this reboot. It's also probably why the "classic style artists" aren't asked to touch this in any way as what we'll produce might slightly look like the classic style. It has to be "All New, All Different... Archie!"

Archie USED to value artists who can draw their characters on model. Not anymore!

Being as I'm probably the last "classic style" Archie artist to somewhat enter the fold, I have to say that I felt they were a bit too strict with that at times. I know I never got much work there because I rebelled a bit and didn't follow it to a T (and yes, I know that there wasn't much work to go around to begin with.) I think character model sheets help, but so long as you know who's who (and it's cute,) I think it's OK. Archie Comics were never really able to find artists that drew exactly alike anyway. Even when we try to follow it, we'll never be DeCarlo (so give it a rest, right?) If they ever revert back to the classic style, I hope they'll cut us a bit of slack (if we're asked back) considering the current output.

Thanks, The Bee! I hope I get to do more. :)

Cool; I remember the original Captain Canuck by George Freeman (is he still around?), and I got a copy of the first trade paperback collection of the rebooted Captain Canuck (haven't had a chance to get to it yet). Now I see where they're bringing the original Captain back in a separate series (due to numerous requests?)  Which series did you do a cover for?

It's for the All-New Classic Captain Canuck series. Cover I did was for issue #5. I assume it's a variant cover. They liked it, so I might be asked for more in the future. :)

When I draw for Archie, I force myself to be a bit more on model ('cause that's what's expected of me,) but I try to make it my own (so people know it's me.) With that said, yeah, I CAN draw Archie not on model. It's actually easier! :)
