Title: Oldest Archie item you own
Post by: Imnotmark on April 02, 2016, 09:32:12 PM
I'm still relatively new to finding and collecting Archie but so far the oldest thing I've found is Archie 132. It's in bad shape but I still got it. Haven't seen anything older yet.

Surprisingly I've had a hard time finding any old Archie.

The oldest item in my collection is a somewhat beat-up copy of Pep #60 from March, 1947. It was given to me as a gift when I bought some other comics from a user on this forum.

The Oldest Item That I own in my Archie Collection is:

Pep #26!

I do have a few pre-archie (MLJ) Titles and Issues, but if we don't count those, than the above is the oldest.

That's awesome! Do you guys get your stuff online a lot of the time?

I'm always hesitant to because I really love going to stores and going through all the old stuff but I can't believe how difficult it's been to actually find old Archie issues.

The oldest Archie item I've got is a copy of Archie Comics #53 (Nov-Dec 1951) that I found on the old B&N Marketplace a number of years ago. But the oldest Archie-published item I've got is Jolly Jingles #15 (Fall 1944).

When comics started to be described as "collectibles" in the mid-1970s Archie comics weren't thought of in the same light — they were considered throwaway fluff for kids, so the vast majority were just thrown away ... even (especially) if they were kept they were well used, often drawn in or worse, and stored in poor conditions ... so they are exceedingly rare today (though still not in demand so the prices are usually comparatively trivial if you can find them at all — and people don't bother selling them since they don't go for much ...

The oldest physical copies I have are actually "Archie Adventure" imprints from the early '60s (the Fly & the Jaguar) ...

The oldest item I own is Archie #3. I found it a bookstore/café for about $4. I wish I can find older stuff but when I saw that it was #3 I snatched it while it was available  :)

Yeah I sort of figured that Archie isn't the most collectible but it's still a surprise. I went to a local small comic store here and actually found a decent amount of stuff.

I told him any Archie he finds to let me know because I've had a really hard time with it.

Do you live on the east coast? Where I live (Missouri) there is virtually no Archie to be had besides the reboot.

I live in Colorado actually. So yeah it's been tough to come by here. I've found a decent amount of 70's-80's
Life with Archie, Betty and Veronica, and little Archie.

I've only found 2 issues of just the normal Archie series though.

My Girlfriend has been trying to find any old Sabrina the Teenage Witch and that has been ever harder. We have found 3 issues of that.

Most anything from the '90s is hard too — as bad as from the '60s at least — they tried to diversify and "re-invent" a lot of stuff then and people either loved it & kept it, or more often hated it and trashed any they had bought (a lot was pretty weird at the time)

I found it pretty easy to find '90s Archies.  Of course, that might be because I bought all of them in the '90s when they came out...   ::)

The oldest Archie comic I have is not that old, it's from the 80's. An Archie Annual Digest.

You know those Vintage Buttons the Archie Comics site has for sale for just .99 cents per button, how vintage do you think they really are for that little of a price tag?

Not 100% sure on this, but just at a guess I'd say they look to be no older than mid-1990s.

Not really that Vintage then.

Well, certainly not what I'd consider vintage, considering that Archie has been around since the 1940s. It's pretty easy tell tell by looking at the art used on those buttons that they don't come from the 1940s or 1950s, which I'd guess (at a minimum) would be most people's interpretation of "vintage". Possibly even (depending on the age of the person) the 1960s or 1970s... Here's one that looks to be early 60s, maybe late 50s...

And here are some that look to be about a decade younger, from the late-late 1960s/early 1970s...

Of course, it's perfectly easy for someone to make more recent buttons using older artwork to give them that "retro look" as well. Here's one with art from the 1950s era that was probably manufactured in the 1990s or even later. The seller was calling it "vintage" on his ebay listing, while at the same time admitting it was from the 1990s.

I guess for me being born in 2002 the 90's could be somewhat vintage and even earlier like the 50's and 60's would be ancient. Sorry for anyone who was around in the 50's and 60's.  ;) It still would be neat to put a few of these pins that are being sold on Archie Comics on my School Bookbag to so off my Archie pride.  :)

I'm not a huge pinback button collector, but will pounce on those targets of opportunity that present themselves if they're free or cheap enough. The only actual Archie pins I have in my collection are the two released to comic shops to promote Archie Meets the Punisher, and a somewhat rarer (but otherwise quite recent) one promoting Archie vs Predator, and another promoting Afterlife With Archie. Now if I was going to go out of my way to aim to get some kind of pins representing Archie, those aren't the ones I'd put on the top of my list, but they were easy for me to get, so why not! The only other Archie-related pin I have is one Jonathan sent to supporters of The Riverdale Podcast (http://riverdalepodcast.com/archive) with a silhouette of Jughead's hat on it.

I don't really collect buttons, but do have some on my school backpack most of which either have to do with musicians/bands or Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

I think my oldest Archie item is Pep Comics #58 from 1946. My grandfather found it at a used book store about 25 years ago. If I remember correctly he only paid two bits for it. It's in pretty decent shape. The cover's attached and it is complete. Since he passed away 8 years ago I would never dream of letting it go. I also have a smattering of issues from the early to late 50's. B & V #14, Jughead's Annual #2, and Archie's Christmas Stocking #'s 3 and 6. I'm nearly 40 now and would never dream of giving up my collection. I still read most, if not all of them.

Reminds me of those old beach party movies that were popular in the early 1960s, especially that JOSIE cover -- if it were a movie it could have been titled Melody Goes Hawaiian.
