I brought a pizza from Pizza Hut Express in Target and a drink from Starbucks. Now I might go downstairs in the college café for about a half hour and buy a soda. I am bored and am waiting to do this assignment (partner should arrive at the college where I am after 4pm sometime)

Wow, I only get $40 allowance every month so like I said I have to be picky with what I get with my money because that is not only used on my comics. It is on if I want candy or anything else.

That is why I am just reading the new rebooted Archie and Jughead series and will add the Betty and Veronica one when that comes out in a few months. I have still never read a "Classic" Archie comic other than the panels that I have seen on the internet. I am really enjoying the stories in the Archie and Jughead series(Especially(Jughead). Back in South Africa I read a webcomic called Cottonstar which was pretty cool.

If I were going to buy a physical copy of this for the cover, it would be the blank sketch variant (but not if it has that horrible block text logo shown on the "not-final-I-hope" image). At least you know having one or more of those around might come in handy if your ever had any inclination to commission a drawing from a pro artist (or even a talented amateur).

Otherwise, this is where going digital has it all over print comics. Who needs 25 variant covers over the exact same interior story filling up boxes in their house, when you can just save any of the images off the internet for free to look at whenever you want? I don't need to purchase the same story multiple times for $4 a pop when there are plenty of other comics to spend my money on.

I guess if you want to look at it that way, it's nice to have 25 flavors of cover to choose just one from, but I don't know if the idea of cultivating comic collectors instead of comic readers is a particularly good one. It sort of changes the basic nature of the hobby to make it more like stamp collecting. The cover art is nice to look at, but what does that have to do with reading comics? I can't argue against the fact that it does help inflate sales for any given issue, since if it didn't work the practice wouldn't continue, but it does feel a little creepy, sort of as if the comic book industry is only surviving on life-support. On one extreme they're pushing cover variants, and on the other extreme they're pushing digital, but the traditional middle ground of one single copy of a printed comic for one reader seems to have just fallen by the wayside. More and more the industry depends on a single comic book collector to carry the burden of being a heavy consumer by purchasing multiple titles and multiple variants of the same issue. And yeah, as it happens, I AM that heavy consumer... I just choose to allocate my money among as many different titles and publishers as possible. But... fewer individual readers, each of whom is depended on to purchase more than was the case in the past, can't be a good publishing model, can it? Whenever a single heavy consumer suffers burnout, it's like losing ten or twenty readers that the industry had in the past. Just my two cents.

I get a lot different ones because I have 12 comic frames . I like to change my wall around . And I don't have a printer . They would just come out black & white at the library. I have only pre-order 13 so far.

I say do whatever the heck you want to do and what makes you happy. I know for me it is a bit expensive to do that, but that me. If you like to display them then that is cool.

Just to be clear, I'm not criticizing the people who collect and enjoy having these variants. It's YOUR money, and nobody can tell you how best to spend it. It's YOUR choice. My choice happens to be to spend my disposable income on maximizing the number of comics I can purchase whose interior contents contain as many different stories as possible, but that's neither here nor there.

I just question whether the continuing proliferation of cover variants doesn't put the comic publishers in the position of becoming overly dependent on too few consumers for the sales of too many copies.

Let me give you an example of what I mean. Let's say Joe Squish is a big fan of all the new Archie Comics. He buys ALL the New Riverdale titles, ALL the Archie Action titles, ALL the Archie Horror titles, and ALL the Dark Circle titles. Joe is an Archie Comics superfan, so he doesn't just get one copy of each issue to read, he gets ALL of the cover variants as well, because he just enjoys collecting them and looking at them. Joe's got a good job, and plenty of disposable income to spend on his hobby, so what's the harm? He enjoys it. Then one day Joe finds out that he's got a medical problem. It's manageable, and not life-threatening, but it's going to cost him some money in terms of doctor appointments, medications, and so forth, even though the major expenses are being covered by his medical insurance. Now Joe has to crunch his budget, and figure out what luxuries to cut out of his disposable income, and he's really going to be forced to curtail his comic spending. Or, maybe Joe's just been collecting too long, not enjoying the hobby the way he did 5 or 10 years ago. Or maybe he needs to save money to buy a new house or a new car, or his hours got cut back at work from 40 to only 32 hours a week. Doesn't matter what the reason is, but Joe Squish's days of throwing cash around for his hobby are coming to an end. He can still enjoy the older comics in his collection, but he needs to cut out buying new ones.

If there are 3 New Riverdale titles, 2 Archie Horror titles, 3 Archie Action titles, and 3 Dark Circle titles, and they all cost $4 each, then if ACP only produced one cover of each of those books every month, the loss of Joe Squish as a consumer of ACP product is (3+2+3+3=)11 comics @ $4 each (OK, just to keep it simple, I'm ignoring the fact that Archie Action titles are still priced at $3, I know). But now what if each of those titles produced by ACP has at least one cover variant every month, and some of them have 3 or 4? Or a new #1 issue that month has 25 variants? Now instead of Joe being responsible for buying 11 copies of Archie Comics every month, he's buying more like 25 or 35 copies. Now Joe Squish's loss as an ACP customer is hurting ACP as a company a lot more than it would have if they were only depending on Joe to buy ONE copy of every title.

I can see a variant cover maybe one or two at the most for an issue and maybe because this one is a special #1 release maybe 10 variants but going what I feel is hog wild and having 20 or so variations of the same cover is a bit overboard. People must like them though.

Why do people buy tons of blank sketch covers (with the same internal material usually unrelated to the commission) when the artist could draw on any old piece of paper?

I only bought 2 variants for Archie #1 because those were the only ones I liked. Coincidentally they both featured Betty on the cover. I'm just a bigger fan of Betty and Veronica. I only buy what I like. I don't indiscriminately collect all the variant covers.

Yes you could print out the covers but not many people have such high quality color printers and you would bankrupt yourself buying ink. Plus you gotta buy high quality paper or the paper will roll.

I can see how variant covers could eventually destroy the industry with your morbid story. I think comic publishers are giving consumers what they want. The covers usually feature art that is different from the regular interior art and they are trying to draw non-Archie fans into picking up a copy of Archie comics.

IMO, buying variant covers is one of the few, only? reason to buy paper comics anymore. You can read the digital versions earlier and faster. I haven't been a comic collector for years and years so I'm not good at the delayed gratification comic shops insist on. Plus, to own a copy of Donald Duck or Silk wouldn't make me as happy as owning the variant cover of B&V.

It's all in what you like to collect. Shows like American Pickers boggle my mind. Why would you want to own something rusty and faded where you can't even see the colors anymore? I tend to be attracted to art that is really bright and colorful (i.e. Jem and the Holograms) so I like the variant covers. Going to conventions is extraordinarily expensive and even getting commissions done is the price of at least 10 variant covers.

The Blank Sketch Covers are kinda just a neat novelty way to get a commission drawing of a character you want I guess. I guess it can also run ya a lot of cash as well.

Let me venture a guess on this one. It's not that any of the people buying those sketch variants particularly care what the interior pages of that (NOT COMPLETELY*) blank sketch variant cover contain, the pages themselves could be blank as well, if it were more feasible (meaning cheaper) to print them that way (but it's not).

*WHY is a blank sketch cover "not completely" blank? Because it has a character's title logo on it, just like regular comic books do. The importance of the logo is this. A BETTY & VERONICA blank sketch cover variant is absolutely worthless to someone who only wants an artist to sketch a picture of SPIDER-MAN on it (unless that pic of Spidey ALSO has B&V in it, as well). That means when the cover gets sketched on by a pro, what the owner now has in his collection is in effect a "custom comic", a one-of-a-kind (as opposed to the unsketched blank) variant THAT NO ONE ELSE OWNS A COPY OF. That's true of the original sketch on an ordinary blank piece of paper as well, but here is the crucial difference (in the minds of those that care about such things, and the popularity of the blank sketch variant attests to this) -- no matter how nice the original art sketch on a blank sheet of paper, IT IS NOT A COMIC BOOK. That's about as simple as it is.

It is neat to have something that is a 1/1 or a custom. The thing is as with any type of art or actually anything that is that limited it comes at a hefty price. The bottom line is it is a very cool collectible to have and maybe someday if they continue to do blank sketch covers in about 10 years or so I can probably get an Archie artist to draw something I want on there for a huge one shot pop of money. Just to say I have a cool comic collectible.

For those of an e-format collecting bent, it's easy enough to collect all the variants and they can be displayed in a video picture frame — they aren't as common as when they first got trendy, and the larger (comic sized) versions are harder to find, but still available ... so you could have a B&V frame on the wall that had it all — and always different, or a mix of whatever you want.

Which is about 180 degrees apart from my own way of thinking. If you like digital comics, then why is the "main cover" (or non-variant) comic book NOT worth owning on paper, AND YET... somehow, the minute the printed comic is available with multiple options for covers, it suddenly IS worth collecting on paper?

Sure, you love the artwork on some particular cover variants over others. BUT YOU CAN HAVE ALL OF THEM FOR FREE (or only the selected ones you prefer over others) simply by right-clicking and "Save image", and you can have these FREE images to admire on your tablet or desktop months in advance of those who need to wait to purchase the printed comic. That, and not American Pickers, is what I find baffling.

Like it was said earlier by someone else it isn't really 100% free to right click them and save and then print them. First you have to have a good print to print quality stuff. Then you have to buy good quality printer paper to make it look all nice, and then there is the cost of the ink as well. Sure you can just have them sitting on your computer to look at now and then but really what fun it that? You could even make your favourite cover your wallpaper if you want. That is free, but not much fun at all. I do agree though that a comic is mostly what comes inside and the cover makes it look pleasing to the eye. Some covers are better than others and I guess that is what they are trying to achieve by giving readers more options to choose the ones they like the best.

So Digital Comic = GOOD; Digital Cover = BAD ?

Me no understand. U like e-comic, Y U print cover then?

It's only "fun" if you have to hunt down the variants one at time, pay for shipping, buy the same actual comic book story over and over again to get the ones that have different printed covers?  I'm MUCH more inclined to collect digital cover images than I am to collect entire digital comics, but I have to admit that the FREE aspect is a big lure, plus it helps to know how to search for images sometimes.

That, and not American Pickers, it what I find baffling.

If you like the regular cover that comes with digital I guess that it is good. If you don't like the way it looks then it is bad. Then you go and look for a variant cover. For me it is 99% what is inside the comic and 1% what the cover looks like. If a variant cover really appeals to me like the Betty and Veronica #1 boxing theme one I will probably get it. If nothing really catches my eye then it really doesn't matter because what matters to me is the story inside.

Free is always a good thing that is for sure. If all you want to do is have them stored on your computer device then that is great. If you want to display the covers in anyway then like I said it is not actually free in the end.

I guess where I am not understanding how others are viewing the printed variant covers is that in MY mind, I can make no actual connection between the art image on the variant cover (unless that particular variant cover was drawn by the same artist who did the interior comic artwork) and the comic book story.

To me, having a variant cover image as a .JPG or something is ideal, because I can disconnect it from the comic story inside that it bears no relationship to,and I don't have to purchase that same story in print over and over again.

I would much rather buy an art book compiling a bunch of "guest artists" interpretations, or homages, or whatever you want to call them, in printed form, rather than hunt down 25 different $4 comic books.

I guess that is why they call it a "Variant" cover because the cover art and artist on the cover have no relationship with the content inside the comic book.

No, as invisifan said above, that is why they invented the digital picture frame. It's the same as the "slide show" photo viewer on your computer, just made specially to sit on a desktop or hang on a wall. For that matter, if your image resolution is good enough, you can do the same thing by downloading the pictures to your digital HDTV.

Yes, it costs about the same as 25 copies of BETTY AND VERONICA #1, but is infinitely re-usable and can display hundreds (perhaps thousands) of digital images. But why gripe about that? Nobody gripes that they spent more money than that on a tablet so that they could better enjoy their collection of hundreds of digital comics.

So in the long run it is worth it. Now if I could only get my hands on the money that would be the same as 25 copies of Betty and Veronica #1 which would be about $100 I guess.  :(

$100 will get you a decent comic-size image display, and probably a couple of things like wi-fi and a remote. It's basically just a really flat high-resolution computer monitor that you can hang on the wall or prop on your desk or countertop, just as you'd do with a regular photo frame. Plus you've got enough memory in there to store boxes and boxes of photos (or artwork, your choice, whatever can be converted to digital images... even video, although you probably don't have enough memory for $100 for anything too long... still, with wifi you could stream from your computer to the frame).

This is an interesting idea. I'll look into this. It seems more feasible than finding wall space for multiple comic frames.

A lot of collecting is about how you display it. Which is why it boggles my mind when people on American Pickers collect so much junk and throw it in a barn haphazard.

It maybe a little expensive upfront for a frame at close to $100, but the amount of images you can display in it would definitely make up for that cost in the long run.

Why do people buy tons of blank sketch covers (with the same internal material usually unrelated to the commission) when the artist could draw on any old piece of paper?

Thanks for explaining this. Your insights to comic culture are invaluable.

They are at computer. electronic & camera stores these days (also Walmart, BeatBuy, etc.) — eBay does new & used and generally has good prices for both ...
For comics display you'd want at least a 12 inch like this (http://www.ebay.com/itm/12-LED-HD-Digital-Picture-Photo-Frame-Remote-Controller-Black-/252048496249?hash=item3aaf42d679:g:plcAAOSw3ydVwviv) for full size display given the way screens are measured — though a 10" might be adequate ...  depending on personal pref ... or you could go for a 15" for not a lot more (mostly all in the $30-60 range) ...

You're welcome. I should add that I've seen some that were highly elaborate productions, as well. Clearly, the owner of the blank variant had approached the artist with a cover concept (probably a small layout sketch done by the owner on a separate sheet of paper) or had described a particular idea which he had in mind in detail to the artist. Other examples would be just a simplified but unique concept (you might say 'high concept' in Hollywood lingo), and let the artist run with the idea in his own imagination. Some even then take the trouble to have the cover inked and colored (penciller, inker, and colorist could be the same person, or even three different people, depending on how well-heeled and dedicated to his idea the owner was), with detailed background details, even word balloons or other text blurbs simulating typical covers.

Here's a book you should check out if you get the chance. The Hero Initiative (which benefits the relief of financially distressed comics creators) created this book by getting 50 artists to donate cover sketches on blank variants of ARCHIE #600. Those original cover creations were then auctioned off to benefit The Hero Initiative, which scanned all the covers before auctioning them off, and then created this book, sales of which provided additional funding for The Hero Initiative.

Don't they just offer digital subscriptions, like ComiXology? The idea of PREordering a single issue of a digital comic just seems weird to me. I mean, if you go to your local comic book store and preorder a single issue of a print comic, it's because (a) you want to make sure the retailer is going to order that issue, and (b) you want to make sure YOUR personal copy is reserved for you in case it might be sold out by the time you could get to the store.

Since digital comics will never be "sold out" or "temporarily out of stock", and you undoubtedly are acutely aware of the exact date that Archie #8 will become available for purchase as a digital comic, there's nothing to worry about as far as not being able to get a copy whenever it becomes available. After it gets released, you simply go to Google Play and purchase it.

With a digital subscription, you'd just have a standing order to have your account charged every time a new issue was released, and it would be available to you whenever you decided to read it, eliminating the need for you to make a separate purchase transaction for each issue individually. ComiXology offers subscriptions to digital titles, but I don't know if Google Play does.

I preorder stuff all the time. Don't judge.  ;)  It gives you something to look forward to. Plus you get to read it as soon as it's released at midnight, 2 am, etc. Why do people like to line up outside for Star Wars movies??? I also like to put a reminder on my calendar when certain comics are going to be released for the same reason.

I don't use Comixology unless I have to (the comic is sometimes cheaper there or it's cheaper on Amazon or if it's only available on Comixology) because I don't like the app. Plus Comixology makes you wait til the business day to read the comic i.e. not at midnight. It's harder to swipe to turn the page on Comixology versus Kindle. Go figure.

I'm not judging anyone. I just am trying to wrap my brain around the logic behind the thinking.

I don't mean to give anyone the impression that I'm promoting ComiXology as superior to Google Play, Amazon Kindle, Archie Digital, or whatever other digital vendor/digital app the buyer has a preference for. I could see if BettyReggie was a consumer who wanted to get Archie #8 as soon as it was released, but maybe wasn't sure exactly when that might be, so she wouldn't necessarily know (or might forget) when to go to Google Play to make the purchase, but we know that's not the case here. I'm also pretty certain that BettyReggie isn't going to decide after she reads Archie #8 that she won't be purchasing the next issue, because she was kind of lukewarm on whether she felt committed to the story, which is the only reason I suggested the idea of a digital subscription. I only mention ComiXology because that's the one example I happen to know of that offers digital subscriptions. That may be unusual for a vendor of digital comics, I wouldn't really know.

Oh, I know what you mean about looking forward to things. I just meant that preordering digital comics doesn't give you any special advantage over anyone else in getting the comic any sooner. You still have to wait as long as the people who didn't preorder for the day and hour it's officially released.

I got Archie #1, Help the CBLDF Defend Comics, Love and Rockets, and Grumpy Cat (and Pokey!) For free from Free Comic Book Day.

I brought Archies Jokes #471, Laugh #339, Laugh #328 Archie & Me #103, and Archie's Joke Book #238. This was all together $15 with 20% off. It was the only 5 older issues they had too. I'm happy. I like treating myself on Free Comic Book day

I just noticed THE WALKING DEAD COLORING BOOK (which is comics you color yourself) at the store last week. So apparently they are covering the people who like to color while simultaneously maintaining higher levels of stress as well.

(And TWD has always been b&w, so you could consider the entire series colouring books)

By the yardstick of you not liking The Married Life or Afterlife With Archie as being too stressful, yes, absolutely. It's pretty much like AWA if it didn't have the Archie characters in it and was better written. (And came out on time every month and sold 100 times better...) Which was why I was surprised to see you were a fan of Harrow County (which I still haven't read... I flipped through it, but the art didn't attract me), as I pretty much thought that was a horror comic (but maybe I was mistaken, since I didn't actually read it).

It is a horror comic but more of a spooky mystery and has witches which is probably why I like it. I was obsessed with the Salem Witch Trials as a kid too. I didn't like the art at first but it the watercolor looks hazy and goes with the mystery aspect of the story.

Reading Afterlife didn't really stress me out but it did gross me out from time to time. I usually really like apocalypse stories but more in the vein of Alex and Ada. I like Descender well enough but I've only read one issue.

I also really like Rachel Rising which I believe is a horror comic. I probably like it because it reminds me of iZombie (tv show).

Walking Dead versus afterlife w/Archie ... The apocalypse in TWD is never explained although there are indications it's biological (virus?) based, and the zombies are less intelligent than animals (Archie's seem a bit smarter) so they are only dangerous in large numbers or when unexpected ... it's a story of survival in a suddenly hostile, post-apocalyptic world — no one is safe, but they aren't pre-existing characters like with Archie.

Speaking of iZombie (and female protagonists, magic, etc...) you might like "Wynonna Earp" (Fridays on Syfy and maybe on-line — in the States I'm not sure) it's 6 episodes in and ... well, hard to say for sure, but I think you might like it.

It's funny to me that you mention Alex + Ada as an "apocalypse story", because that never would occur to me, and I don't see it that way. To me it's a science fiction story about 2 people (one of whom is an artificially-intelligent android) caught up in a political/social upheaval which hinges on changes brought about by advancing technology (most good science fiction is, one way or another, about social change being brought about by advancing technology). It also seems to explore some philosophical questions regarding how we define what it means to be "human". Humans are used to being in control as the sole sentient species that are masters of the earth, and in this story, most people seem to want to cling to that sense of superiority and not share their dominance with a new type of intelligent being. This is actually a pretty common theme of the particular subgenre of SF dealing with robots and artificial intelligences. In the Terminator franchise, the two intelligences are of different types and are in a state of war (John Connor is the leader of the organic intelligences, while Skynet is the leader of the cybernetic intelligences, and in fact those intelligences form a hive-mind). The Terminator future is one I'd consider post-Apocalyptic, because humanity is on the brink of extinction. In Alex + Ada, it's the new robot intelligences who are in danger of being hunted to extinction, but the robots are too few and have too little power to consider it a state of war. The difference between the two is that in the Terminator franchise, Skynet was created by humans for the specific purpose of waging war (and it does such a good job of it, that it simply decided to redefine the definition of "the enemy"), while in Alex + Ada, the robots were created for a different purpose altogether - to serve as companions to humanity (but what humans really want is obedient but intelligent servants, not a new free-thinking species to share the planet with). In Alex + Ada, it's human society that is the ultimate "villain" of the story. For the newly-emerging robot species, it's less of an apocalypse than a crib-death, but surprisingly, by the final issue some sort of state of compromise between humans and robots seems to be slowly emerging.

I have read some of the iZombie comic. I think the TV show is a tad better but so far they are pretty different stories from each other. From what I have seen so far it isn't too gruesome and is probably more of a sanitized or girlie zombie story written by a guy of course.

I think I meant to say dystopian. In my mind I lump all these stories together as futuristic stories. That's a nice summary of Alex and Ada and you bring up some good points. I think I really like it because it reminded me of Japanese manga stories like Chobits and Absolute Boyfriend which I loved. To a lesser extent it reminds me of Kimi wa petto as well.

The Disney DONALD DUCK by Barks hardcovers are (as this one is) around 216 pages, and composed of several stories. Usually they are titled after what the publisher feels would be the most notable or memorable story contained in that volume, but as all the stories are reprinted from old Disney comic books, none of them is any longer than would fit in a single comic book. The "Trail of the Unicorn" story is 24 pages, and it does indeed have a unicorn in it. The remainder of the Donald Duck stories in this volume have no unicorns in them. They're all the stories drawn by Carl Barks that immediately followed "Trail of the Unicorn" (because it's the very first story in this collection) by date of original publication.

Yes, from IDW — Originally a very '90s comic from Image (5 issues, 1995) it was revived by IDW in 2002 with a trade of the original run and a limited series "Home on the Strange"  ... then another in 2009 which were basically connected. The comic and TV series have  the title and owner in common ... beyond that? A female ''zombie" (in Seattle) who eats brains of the recently deceased to retain her human intellect and gets their memories when she does ... there is no other similarity at all — not even the names of the characters, how she gets brains (gravedigger vs morgue assistant) or what she does with the memories, or even the nature of the zombies ... it's a more total reboot than Riverdale, though given that the original involves a wide variety of supernatural creatures (ghost, shapeshifter, mummy, vampires and more) and has a definite direction and ending after 4 trade novels it really had to, to work as a TV show ... they are very much two different thing with a related concept — I don't mind the comic, but overall I think the show is stronger ...

I started reading The Walking Dead. I've read the first 3 issues so far. It definitely likes to end on cliffhangers to keep you reading. As far as being "heavy" and stressful it's not too bad so far. The zombies are drawn more comical than scary. Maybe the females like the family man aspect or maybe they just think Glenn is hot.  :smitten:

I'm just not much of a fan of horror comics that are ongoing series. I like shorter, done-in-one stories or miniseries (or anthologies of shorts like the classic EC horror comics). So far I've considered AWA and ChAoS as miniseries (they come out so infrequently that they don't make much of a dent in my comic budget or reading time), and I don't expect them to go on for substantial runs. Ongoing series like the 1970s Marvel monster comics (Tomb of Dracula, Monster of Frankenstein, Werewolf By Night, Man-Thing, etc.) were more like "monster-hero" series ("monster-villain" in the case of Dracula) than horror. Even if it were an extended saga, but the author obviously had a predetermined story structure for moving it forward over long arcs, with an ultimate ending he was working toward, I might consider it. But The Walking Dead is obviously much too successful for that to be the case. The humans have no hope of any final triumph in their situation, unless the comic were to start sliding in sales, in which case the writer might then decide to invent a conclusion just to satisfy the long-time readers. The idea of an ongoing series where the characters just constantly struggle for survival against the bleakest odds with no hope of winning just depresses me.

Yes, all I really collect is Sabrina titles including the new Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. The digests I get and read and pass them onto my 9 year old daughter who reads them and then she sometimes cuts the covers she likes off them or gives some to her friends. The more kids that get to read the digests that makes me happy so I keep purchasing them every once in awhile.

That is a great point. Sometimes it seems to me that pass-along readership of comics must be nearly a thing of the past, because comic book readers have become so synonymous with comic book collectors/hoarders (guilty as charged!), so its good to know someone's still paying it forward to the next generation.

Got a big order of Archie Comics back issues in the mail from MyComicShop.com:

B & V FRIENDS DOUBLE DIGEST #236
BETTY AND VERONICA DIGEST #187, 189, 207
JUGHEAD (1987) #89, 90, 91, 93, 94, 160 (all key Trula Twyst issues)
JUGHEAD & ARCHIE JUMBO COMICS DIGEST #5
JUGHEAD & FRIENDS DIGEST #31, 34
TALES FROM RIVERDALE DIGEST #4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 12, 14, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 38, 39
VERONICA'S PASSPORT DIGEST #2

Total cost ( for 40 comics) was $129.30. Shipping was $4.95. They do an excellent job of packing these shipments with bags and boards and a printed label identifying each comic and the price (on the bag, of course), then they bundled those 40 comics into 3 larger bags. The box they shipped in had these neat foam corner inserts to protect the comics from bump and dings if the package was mishandled. Kudos to the guys at Lone Star for going the extra mile.

Already sat down and read the JUGHEAD issues featuring the first 5 appearances of Trula, plus a key story from #160 (Jughead kissed her twice!). I'll be reviewing those a little later when I get the time to sit down and write something substantial. All in all, I should have enough here to get me through a few weeks or a month. I'd like to be giving my money to ACP, but... hey, they refuse to do the logical, sensible thing and reprint stories like the original appearances of Trula Twyst (to give but one example) in a trade paperback. So the back issue dealers get my money instead. Smart thinkin', ACP! Just make sure you keep putting out 25 cover variants on every new comic you print, that'll make up for it.  >:(

Anything special in those Betty and Veronica digests? I've been reading some older Betty and Veronica digests and they used to publish some Josie stories.

Don't really know. I'll let you know after I read them. I have a game plan for collecting digests... apart from only a few very-short-run titles, I'm only collecting digests from the period of 2005 through 2014 (I didn't start getting the current digest titles until January 2015). 2005 is when LAUGH COMICS DIGEST and JUGHEAD WITH ARCHIE DIGEST were cancelled and replaced by TALES FROM RIVERDALE DIGEST and JUGHEAD & FRIENDS DIGEST, respectively. Both of those titles distinguished themselves from the ones they replaced by featuring (then-)new stories in every issue. Looking at other digests from the around the same time, I noticed that other titles also began featuring new stories. BETTY AND VERONICA DIGEST had new stories from at least issue #185 (that's the first one I'm sure of, at any rate), which was "Betty and Veronica Meet Betty and Veronica", the second in a series of four Memory Lane stories, so that's the point I picked to go back to as a starting point (good luck finding a non-digital copy of 185, though I've read the story in question). It's a short run to the end after that, since BETTY AND VERONICA DIGEST ends (after getting a brand-new logo in issue #188) with #208, and is thereafter replaced by B&V FRIENDS DOUBLE DIGEST #209 (which I'm also collecting beginning with that issue). I think I mentioned this before, but B&V FRIENDS has Josie stories in every issue. Still missing a couple dozen of those.

I think new lead stories were featured in the early Betty and Veronica double digests a lot more often than we previously released or at least the lead stories don't seem to be reprinted. I have almost all these DD's and I've been perusing them looking for Josie and Sabrina stories.

I've been going through trying to find all the Josie and the Pussycats stories. In Archie and Friends, each issue had a Pussycats long after they disappeared from the cover.

I've been going through trying to find all the Josie and the Pussycats stories. In Archie and Friends, each issue had a Pussycats long after they disappeared from the cover.

I read those issues of BETTY AND VERONICA DIGEST today, and I think out of the three digests there were maybe two stories that I hadn't read before. They all contain 12-page JOSIE sections (two issues with stories from the ARCHIE & FRIENDS issues, only one with classic-era J&TP stories - that I'd read before). They all contain SABRINA sections (but it's *UGH!* "The Animated Series" Sabrina, so I skipped them). There were probably some new-at-the-time stories in there, but the only notable one was Dan Parent's 24-page "Sleeping Betty" (1st appearance here in #207 [from 2010], with a great cover) -- but again, it's one I'd already read.

B&V FRIENDS DOUBLE DIGEST #236 [from 2013] was far superior, containing mostly stories I hadn't read before, including a JOSIE section with stories from (I'd guess) the 70s or early 80s. No Sabrina in this one, but there were also separate sections for LI'L JINX (skipped it) and CHERYL BLOSSOM (hadn't read it, and loved it), plus the usual mix of more recent stories and even a couple of classic era ones (none of those in the other B&V digests I'd read earlier). It not only had a new lead B&V story (by Dan Parent), but new (at least I assume) stories with GINGER (Lopez, not Snapp! - 6 pages, Dan P again) and ...hold on to your hat ... NANCY!! By Holly G., no less! (5 pages) Looking cuter than I've ever seen her, with a unique frizzly 'do and some big hoop earrings --just Nancy, and her cat, no Chuck! I practically fell off my chair -- I think I might have seen a Ginger solo story before, but I've never seen a Nancy solo story! (I swear, if I ever saw a Midge solo story, I'd probably die of a stroke or something.)

Then there was VERONICA'S PASSPORT DIGEST #2 [Dec. 1993], which reprinted 4 early issues of VERONICA, complete with fashion pages (issues #4/"in Hollywood"; #7/"in Australia"; #8/"in Mexico"; and #13/"in Canada"). That one was pretty amazing -- not only 4 early issues of VERONICA, none of which I'd read before, but the pages were bright white like it had just rolled off the presses yesterday (not the cheaper paper you see used in a lot of the older digests -- in fact it might even be better than the paper stock they're using today).

Please let us know if they have the Gwen Stefani Christmas Collection of polishes.   "Red Fingers and Mistletoes" and "Christmas Gone Plaid" are two nice contrasting colors imo.

I brought shoes online from a UK website which are converse but they belong to the Converse Nude Collection so its a Nude Pink color. its cute. However I realized I brought them in the wrong size, damn UK sizes i forgot to convert to US sizes. But turns out I can make my mistake into a christmas gift for my sister so its not a total loss of buying them and its one less christmas gift to buy in November/December

I'm a size 7 US shoe but apparently a conversion chart said size 7 UK is size 9 US :(

All of the DVDs of BEN 10 ALIEN FORCE and BEN 10 ULTIMATE ALIEN that I was missing from my collection. I had held off on buying them when they originally came out (between 2008 and 2012) in the vain hope that Warner Home Video would do something sensible, like releasing those series as complete season boxed sets at some sort of reasonable price, instead of their usual money-grubbing policy of putting 5 or 6 half-hour episodes on a single DVD, each one selling for somewhere from $10-13. Since 4 years have gone by since the last of those DVDs was released, it doesn't look like that will ever happen, so I thought I should get the 10 individual DVD releases of episodes that I was missing (after buying a single bargain compilation of the first four individual DVDs of ALIEN FORCE) - which would have wound up costing me just about $110, were it not for the fact that I had a few Amazon Gift Cards from Christmas, so I used those to pay.

The complete set of all of Holly G's SCHOOL BITES comics (print versions), plus some extras like her Witches 'n' Whatnot Mini-Artbook, Cuties & Cupcakes Pin-Up Book, and School Bites ID cards, direct from Holly via the Broadsword Comics website.

What I found really interesting was a 1-page prologue/"origin" of School Bites (not the characters, but the origin of the series itself) which did not appear on the School Bites webcomic site. Interesting because the genesis of the School Bites comic is a direct result of the reason Holly G quit working for ACP.

You're reading Jem again? What made you change your mind?

I was thinking about buying those Gisele covers, until I noticed that the Gisele cover variants for issues #20-24 are all "Retailer Incentive" covers (so good luck finding a copy for cover price). Too rich for my blood.

The thing that kills me is that IDW is not even letting Gisele have her artwork featured on the main cover for those last three issues where she did the interior art. So I said the heck with it, and will wait for the TP collecting those last three issues she drew.

There were also these RI cover variants for JEM #20 & 21 by Gisele.

Jen Bartel's artwork is really good though. She drew a few issues too (not as good as her covers). Retailer incentive variants are usually around $4 at TFAW but you have to play shipping making them come out to around $8.

I'll wait and see. I suspect the variant covers Gisele drew for JEM will all show up in the trade collection in a Cover Gallery (they may even use one of them as the actual TP cover). It's only going to be a thin trade collecting the last three issues (although the final issue is giant-sized, so I guess that amounts to almost 4 regular issues, which is usually about the minimum for a TP collection).

I like Jen Bartel's covers, too. Also Ross Campbell's cover for #1A (they really should have kept him as an interior artist) and Amy Mebberson's covers for #2B, 2C, 2D, & 2E, Tania Del Rio's cover for #10 (Archie month variant) and Shouri's cover for #10 SUB. Victoria Robado's covers aren't bad either. Not crazy about most of the rest of them, but actually, now that I think of it, there should be enough room in that last TP for cover gallery of ALL of the previous covers and variants.

I bought these
oct160441jNOV160434Jdec160556j1606558 ful

(https://www.archiefans.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fd1466nnw0ex81e.cloudfront.net%2Fn_iv%2F600%2F3726779.jpg&hash=728e954c6d300f92cc9e24b253c7c74300c96660)(https://www.archiefans.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fd1466nnw0ex81e.cloudfront.net%2Fn_iv%2F600%2F3808751.jpg&hash=5427c965e1a85c4b7c2f3e3c6d7e2cb565c13f07)

Shouri and Victoria Robado are the same person. Shouri is just her pseudonym. She does a lot of work with Gisele as well though she's mostly known for her coloring. Most of her art is chibi so you might not like it. She did some covers for the recent Kiss series as well.

They did release a covers book collection for Jem though that was awhile ago and it wouldn't be complete now.

I've been buying 2000AD comics hardcover collections and softcover graphic novels like crazy, just really getting back into it bigtime.
All stuff I've recently gotten in the last couple weeks or am waiting on an order for:

THE ART OF JUDGE DREDD HC
JUDGE DREDD THE COMPLETE CARLOS EZQUERRA HC VOL 01
JUDGE DREDD THE COMPLETE CARLOS EZQUERRA HC VOL 02
JUDGE DREDD THE CURSED EARTH UNCENSORED HC
JUDGE DREDD YEAR ONE TP
JUDGE DREDD DEATH LIVES TP
JUDGE DREDD DARK JUSTICE HC
RO BUSTERS THE COMPLETE NUTS & BOLTS HC VOL 01
RO BUSTERS THE COMPLETE NUTS & BOLTS HC VOL 02
A.B.C. WARRIORS THE MEK-FILES 03 HC
A.B.C. WARRIORS RETURN TO EARTH HC
BAD COMPANY: GOODBYE, KROOL WORLD TP (VOL. 1)
BAD COMPANY: KANO TP (VOL. 2)
BAD COMPANY: FIRST CASUALTIES TP (VOL. 3)

Grud knows when I'm going to find the time to read all these. It was a drokking mess just trying to sort out what's available in print and the correct reading order for these books. It's a long-term project I guess. I started off with a few of the American hardcover editions of Judge Dredd published by IDW (not listed above, as that was months ago), and a couple of more recent things from the last few years like the 2000AD FCBD giveaways and other one-shot magazine specials, and then just decided to really try to sort it all out (40 years worth of stories from this British sci-fi comic. which is published weekly, so there have been over 2000 issues, or "progs", plus Annuals, Yearbooks, and Specials, & over 300 issues of the JUDGE DREDD MEGAZINE).

So far I've completed the runs of stories of Rogue Trooper, BAD Company, Ro-Busters, and am closing in on completing the A.B.C. Warriors collected stories (just missing 2 volumes in TP now). Then I need to work on finishing a few more of the shorter runs of collected editions for Judge Anderson PSI-Division (6 more TPs), Strontium Dog (5 more TPs), Nemesis the Warlock (1 deluxe hardcover), and Judge Death (2 more TPs, I think). There's just a massive amount of Judge Dredd (over 80 collected volumes in the hardcover Judge Dredd Mega Collection) so I imagine that I'll just be hitting the highlights of the major storylines, trying to get the larger deluxe hardcover editions whenever possible, or artist-centric collections. I do have all the graphic novel collections of Judge Dredd crossover stories co-published with DC Comics, Dark Horse, and IDW.

Of course even just the limited list of characters whose stories I'm trying to collect represents only about 20% (or less) of all the stories published in the 40-year history of 2000AD magazine. I'd been reading these characters since the early 1980s, but somewhere around the early 1990s the reprint albums got harder to find in American comic shops and the storylines became more confusing to me, and I just drifted away from it for a few decades. Fortunately things are easier now, as you can order even the out-of-print collections (usually at reasonable prices) and have them shipped from UK booksellers on Amazon. The money I got back from my tax return is going to England!

Y'know, seeing Archiecomicxfan215's new Jughead t-shirt sort of made me curious (it's been a while since I looked) about what kind of Archie Comics t-shirts designs are out there these days. The short answer is, "tons of them". THIS ONE, however, was the coolest design I think I found (and it could even pass as a casual Halloween costume)!

Some nice Dan Parent head shots there. Maybe it's me, but doesn't it seem a little weird that the shirt design allows space for a dozen character head shots, but it's the same six characters, repeated twice? ... Rather than, as would seem to make a lot more sense to me, including Moose, Midge, Chuck, Nancy, Cheryl, and Dilton? I suppose they could have made the main cast's heads a little larger, and the supporting cast's heads a little smaller (and mixed up the pattern) to make the main characters faces stand out a little more.

I was thinking along the same lines except instead of Nancy, Chuck, and Cheryl, using Weatherbee, Grundy, and Pop Tate (or Mr. Lodge).  Then I sort of realized the Hot Topic demographic probably doesn't want to walk around with images of old folks on their shirts.   :(

I picked up a large run of the Dell Roy Rogers series that filled a lot of gaps and I now need only 14 more issues for the run.  The run included #1, but it has a detached cover so I'm not keeping that issue.

Bought a few DVDs at Walmart (I used to buy DVDs like crazy a few years back, but have since scaled it back to just a couple occasionally).

SCOOBY-DOO AND BATMAN: THE BRAVE & THE BOLD -  It's a pretty straight sequel to the B:tB&tB animated series, and has a bunch of guest-stars (Martian Manhunter, Plastic Man, The Question, Detective Chimp, Aquaman, Black Canary, and also scads of Bat-villains, including Catwoman wearing her rarely-seen Silver Age costume) in a 90-minute feature film (the DVD also includes the 2 episodes of The New Scooby-Doo Movies from the 1970s where Batman & Robin were the guest-stars, as bonus features). But it also reminded me quite a bit of the current SCOOBY-DOO TEAM-UP comic book, which I also love. So the basic premise here is that Mystery Incorporated have been invited to join The Mystery Analysts of Gotham City (which was, for few brief years in the 1960s, a real thing in the Batman comics). There is a mystery involving one of Batman's early cases, and his failure to save a scientist's life in a teleportation experiment gone wrong (and it now appears the ghost of the scientist is haunting Batman as a creature calling itself "The Crimson Cloak"). It's got one of twistiest plots I've ever seen in either a Scooby-Doo story, OR a Batman story, and Daphne wearing a Batgirl costume (that's a good thing). I even learned that Daphne is a whiz at word scrambles (also known as anagrams). Just when you think the solution to the mystery villain in obvious, they throw in another twist that you didn't see coming. It was a lot of fun.

JUSTICE LEAGUE ACTION Season One, Part 1: SUPERPOWERS UNITE! - I hadn't seen the show prior to buying the DVD, but it was $10 for 26 episodes, so I figured I'd take a chance... turns out the episodes are only 10-11 minutes long (I can't imagine... does Cartoon Network program 15-minute time-blocks now?). But I didn't feel ripped off, because they packed a whole lot of story (and action) into that 10 or 11 minute cartoon. A variety of different characters pop up in any given episodes, with lots of callbacks to DC Comics history, so I won't complain about Superman's lack of red overshorts or Wonder Woman's missing golden eagle emblem. They could have made much more radical character changes (I'm thinking here of the series called "THE BATMAN"... ) I could quibble about not liking the character designs as much as the original Justice League cartoon, or pick nits about a whole list of this or that character, but on the whole (and considering most of the DTV animated feature films WB/DC has been releasing over the last decade or so), I'm pretty happy with it. This show feels like a breath of fresh air compared to the tone of the feature films, with rare exceptions like the one above, BATMAN & HARLEY QUINN, BATMAN '66, and one or two others. It feels like a return to the "good ol' DC Animated Universe" of the 1990s/early-2000s. A good ongoing DCU animated series has been missing for a bunch of years now, so I was surprised and glad (since I'd stopped paying attention) to see this. Sweet!

ARCHER Season 8 - Haven't watched it yet, but I love this show! Didn't realize another year had already gone by since I bought the Season 7 DVD set. Looking forward to it, since I never know what to expect in terms of what curves they'll throw at the viewer.

I was underwhelmed by the first Incredibles film. To this day, I'm sort of mystified over how successful and popular it turned out to be. The film ran counter to my expectations, which is why I felt disappointed when I saw it. Based on my earlier viewing of the character designs, I'd expected to be watching a comedic superhero cartoon, but when I saw it, I didn't feel like the movie was very funny at all. So why the "cartoony" character designs, I wondered? Of course the CGI animation was superb, but I'd already seen Toy Story, so I was past being bedazzled by that aspect -- I'd already come to expect that in a Pixar-animated film. It did make me think that a similar Mighty Mouse film would work.

The style was a choice made to counter the "uncanny valley" effect, that comes from over-realistic animation.

And the plot is actually the most multi-layered plot of any Western Animation film I know of.

I've always wondered about that. I don't seem to experience that with characters who are modeled in CGI from the ground up. Why is it that the over-realistic style of CGI animation is used constantly in videogames, where it never seems to bother anyone? I'm thinking here of the "cut scenes" between levels in the game, that set up some sort of story or move it forward, before moving it into the next interactive stage. Why wouldn't that work for an entire superhero film? There have been a couple of movies like that filmed (Final Fantasy).

Although I will admit I did experience the "creep-out" factor recently when seeing the trailer for the live-action adaptation of Battle Angel Alita, based on a manga story, where the director made the questionable decision to apply post-production CGI effects in order to enlarge the main character's eyes, to better reflect how she looked as drawn in the original manga. I've seen something like that in a phone app, and it still creeps me out whenever that face-morphing stuff is applied to filmed images.

I guess when the characters are designed to look cartoony, I just naturally expect them to act cartoony. To be honest, I can't now recall a single thing about the plot of The Incredibles, apart from the fact that the movie was loosely homaging the Fantastic Four. I'm kind of surprised because Brad Bird's The Iron Giant impressed the hell out of me.

Looney Tunes Playboy Penguin Funko Pop collectible

That was a San Diego Comic Con exclusive, right? I had to look it up because I wondered if it was the character I was thinking of (from the Bugs Bunny cartoon, the title of which I can't recall off the top of my head). Usually I've been immune to the attractions of Funko Pop vinyls (my tastes just run to toys having a more accurate representation, rather than an interpretive one), but in this instance the character as realized in vinyl actually looks fairly close to its on-screen counterpart (except for having no irises, for some reason). Probably a total fluke that the original animation character design just happens to be closer to the usual Funko Pop style than would normally be the case. Such an obscure WB character, too.

(https://www.nostalgeek.ch/shop/11438-thickbox_default/toy-funko-pop-animation-sdcc-2018-looney-tunes-playboy-penguin-exclusive-vinyl-figure-geek-geneva-switzerland-shop.jpg)

Hey, here's a question that just occurred to me... did Funko ever do a Marvin the Martian Pop vinyl figure?  It just hit me that the relative head-to-body proportions of Marvin's original character design are pretty much Funko Pop standard, or close enough, anyway.

Hmm. Not quite what I expected. They changed the basic body colors, squared off his head a little, and gave his eyes kind of a more sinister look. I never did see Space Jam; no real interest in any sports-related stuff, plus I tend not to like those live-action/animated mashups.

Duck Dodgers the series was good, for a newer cartoon. Wish they'd made more episodes of that, and The Looney Tunes Show.

I bought (4) Josie and the Pussycats Frame-Tray Puzzles by Whitman, c. 1971 and The U.S. of Archie Vinyl Record by Peter Pan Records, c. 1975 at a local antique store today.

Wow, that's a find!  Usually all you find in those stores is junk. What I mean is, people are sharper these days in terms of recognizing that old stuff (particularly character merchandise) has collectible value due to an awareness of eBay, etc.

Especially something like puzzles, because finding those completely intact with the original box and all the pieces still there is hard.

Very true! I love the hunt, but its becoming harder and harder to find items for my collection in antique stores. I do however seem to come across A LOT of Archie-themed Welch's jelly glasses and McDonald's Happy Meal toys.

Those Welch's glasses are fairly common. It seems like they made several series of those over a few years, during the height of the Filmation cartoons' popularity. They were fairly durable, and people did actually tend to save them and keep them in decent condition.

I was not aware of any Archie McDonald's Happy Meal toys, however. As far I know, the McD Happy Meal toys didn't really become a going 'thing' until the early-to-mid '80s, which would have been beyond the peak awareness period (late 60s to late 70s) for the Archie characters. You may or may not know anything about this, but as far as I can tell there's never been any sort of guide book for Archie collectibles. If you have any photos of those Happy Meal toys, I'd love to see them.

I bought The U.S. of Archie by Peter Pan Records (https://www.instagram.com/p/BtTL70xBhGi/), c. 1975 from my local antique mall.

I always wondered what the guys at Filmation were thinking with that one. I mean sure, for about a year and half the whole country was going crazy with "bicentennial fever" or whatever you want to call it, and the U.S. government was marketing the flag-waving patriotic celebration concept like nobpdy's business.

Still, you had to figure the hard-headed business guys in TV production knew how these things work, and that those animated shows were only profitable to the extent that you could get the maximum amount of mileage out of them as reruns. Naturally after the bicentennial was over anything tied in with it was going to seem stale and dated, so... what were they thinking? Kids were only going to put up with an "educational" Archie show about U.S. history as long as the bicentennial fever raged on. And indeed, the U.S. of Archie had nothing like the shelf-life of the Filmation Archie cartoons that had come before it (except for maybe TV Funnies, another odd mismatch of two disparate ideas, which also didn't play well in reruns).

That makes merchandise items specifically spawned by The U.S. of Archie incarnation exceptionally rare. Got (or know of) any items specifically merchandised from Archie's T.V. Funnies?

I won an auction for books 3-10 of the Archie Riverdale High series by Mike Pellowski.  I already had two of the books, but needed the rest.  I still need the first two books and there was a special as well.  There doesn't seem to be a lot of information out there on the series, but I think there were only the 11 books.

If/when you get around to reading those, a comparison between the original novels and the "New Look Archie" digest comic adaptations (also written by Pellowski under a pseudonym) would be interesting. What was left out/added or changed (besides the titles) in the decade or more between the two versions?

That's a great series. Lots of stories written by Bob Bolling and Kathleen Webb, mostly with art by Doug Crane. Most (maybe all?) of the stories are told from the 1st-person perspective, so you really get a peek into Betty's mind to see how she thinks. I snap these up whenever I come across them (which isn't often, unfortunately, so I have nowhere near a complete run).

Question is, why hasn't there been a trade paperback collection of Betty's Diary in the "Archie Comics Presents" series (or of Veronica or Jughead, for that matter)? ACP drives me nuts sometimes.

I contacted their support, and they said, if I didn't receive an e-mail about the promotion (I didn't), I'm not eligible. Then why was the notification sent to me in the app? Why did it tell me to click Activate and then Shop Now? I feel like I've been ripped off, especially since I spent a lot of time going through my digital wish list (https://www.amazon.com/gp/registry/wishlist/14FS742SI1R5I) and selecting precisely which books to buy in order to maximize content.
