What genres of comic books do you most prefer to read or collect?  Archie would of course fall under the "Humor" category. 

No "all of the above"? I have read and collected all of those genres (and others).

And what about manga, or are you specifically dis-including foreign comics genres? Some might might roughly be categorized in one of the traditional American comics genres, but many would not fit (for example, Lone Wolf & Cub), so maybe a catch-all genre for manga?

I added Manga to the poll.  I didn't want to split genres up too much, as there can be quite a bit of overlap as you well know.  "Humor" as an example could include Archie, Hot Stuff, Mad, and the Inferior 5. All quite different comics, but I'd think they all fit comfortably in the humor category.

That's a great question. I love to read Archie Comics while I also love Saga . I guess you can Saga a fantasy comic. Saga doesn't take place on earth.  The Super Hero Comics I like to read is Invincible & Super Boy & Bat Girl & Unbeatable Squirrel Girl & Black Canary.

I chose Fantasy (thinking that's where I'd put Conan), Humor, Superheroes, and Sci-Fi. If I could choose 5, I would have included Adventure (because I read James Bond).

Yeah, it should be five, or even six. I would have added Monster and Adventure, but limited to four I chose Sci-Fi, Manga, Superhero, and Humor. Steve didn't specify whether he was referring to current comic books, or just everything, new and old. I would probably have to admit that the percentage of superhero comics that I would consider my "favorite" comic books being published currently is lower than it ever has been for me, or maybe the favorites just need to be a whole lot better now than they did in the past. Or maybe it's just that the other genres got a lot better, or a little of both.

I like comics that I would categorize as "girlie" that have female protagonists. Most of these are probably categorized as slice of life or romance but not the traditional romance comics. I like humor but besides Archie most humor comics these days consistent of badly drawn web comics.

So basically, what you like is the equivalent of shojo manga for American young women, without actually being shojo manga translated into English. But most comics having female protagonists are not girlie -- although the mainstream ones are a lot girlier in the last couple of years than they used to be, in an attempt to grab hold of a rising demographic of readers. The problem with most of those mainstream comics is that it's hard to do a comic with a female protagonist that appeals equally to both a strong male and a strong female demographic of readers. For the most part, Japanese publishers have accepted that their comics genres need to be targeted specifically to age and gender, and although there's always some slight overlap, what appeals to younger readers generally doesn't appeal to older readers, and what appeals to male readers generally doesn't appeal to female readers. There are a few exceptions, of course.

I voted for Humor. That's the only genre I've ever read, other genres don't really interest me much

Well I do like manga a lot....


Yeah I hate being fooled by a female protag with beautiful art in a comic and when I go to read the story it isn't what I thought at all.
