I think it would be okay to make a thread for plot theories/speculation? The other Riverdale thread is kinda long and I thought that perhaps a thread for this specific topic would help keep things tidy.

Anyway, I'll start out :0

I wasn't sure about it before but when I posted it on tumblr it gained traction so I'm assuming it must have some credibility in terms of being possible!
I came up with a theory based of the leaked script, some interviews I read, and the trailers!

It's kind of...a long post lol so I'll just link it!

What do you guys think? Any ideas of your own?

Y'know I read this tumblr, but it'd be neat to add stuff here! I think one of the most interesting things they are doing is with Betty and her mother. They're bringing back Madchen Amick in from Twin Peaks in it. And I love her! And ::SPOILERS:: but so she seems to be overdosing Adderall to Betty, who does have ADHD. Which is just some neat representation :00 And the idea of Betty's mother being unhealthy and sometimes emotionally abusive to her kids is just really... like compelling to me?


And I hope they do it where Cheryl is the red herring for the murder of her brother, but instead - it is Betty's mother. Because we've seen her investigating the murder and it just seems... very likely due to the implied damaging relationship between Jason and Polly.


Anyway, the murdering parent trope is like p classic in CW TV stuff, but at least it's like different than Afterlife With Archie. So Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa isn't just recycling the awful incest subplot. And also that recent interview with RAS where he said "they'd never sexualized these characters before" is like completely false based on what I've seen... They did pinups of the girls in the 40s like!! It's not that original, bud.

Cheryl Blossom did kill her brother in Afterlife With Archie. And then she wanted to called Blaze. She was called Blaze in Archie's Explorers Of Unknown. Plus in Afterlife With Archie, they made Cheryl & Jason very strange. It seemed like they were more of a couple than Brother & Sister. I wonder if they do that in the show. And that would be the reason why Cheryl killed Jason.

I just wouldn't be into that same plot to be done beat for beat in Riverdale after Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa already employed in his Afterlife With Archie Comic. I know that they are basing some of the storylines on the Reboot series and for sure RAS would take inspiration from his previous stories... But Cheryl Blossom just being the straight old murderer and for them to the recycle the brother-sister are lovers/incest subplot would be kinda ? Boring?


I definitely like Apple's ideas about maybe Jason's murder being more complex than it seems.

I think that they're going to try to go for a "shocker". I doubt they'd just use the same plot from Afterlife. Plus the trailers are trying to make it look like it was Cheryl and I'm 90% sure they're just trying to mislead us.

I agree! From a writing standpoint, it's most likely Cheryl, Polly, or Betty's mom- everyone else is too important to be a murderer or not important enough to care about. I would say Cheryl is too likely, and Polly isn't given a lot of importance. From parts of the leaked pilot, you can tell a LOT of focus is being put on the adults- which is downright strange for an Archie series! I think this is to make Betty's mother a more credible character, and make the fact that she killed Jason more shocking.

It could be a character that never really talk about, what about Chuck or Dilton being the killer of Jason?

Of course, I hope they'd do it in a way as to where if you go back and watch it again after the fact you pick up on little hints and clues that you missed the first time around.
