Panel one: The setting is seven in the morning in Samantha Smythe's bed room. Samantha Smythe is waking up as she sits up in bed and stretches her arms. Samantha is wearing a pink t-shirt and black shorts. She has a massive case of bed hair. In the room are various sports poster on the wall. On her dresser with a mirror attached are various photos of her family, and her and Bingo Wilkin at different ages. On a nearby counter are a stack of fitness magazines, wrestling action figures, her smart phone and a cute teddy bear.

Sampson Smythe off-panel: Samantha! Wake up! No one sleeps their life away in this household!!

Samantha: Yaaaawn.

Samantha: No one gets any sleep with all the yelling.

Panel two: Samantha is walking past her dresser mirror as she doesn't notice that she has no reflection in it.

Samantha:  Bingo and I are going to the movies and see The Shield vs. The Black Hood: High Noon today. I can't wait!

Panel three: Samantha's eyes suddenly widen as she realizes that she didn't have a reflection in the mirror.

Samantha: !??

Panel four: Samantha runs back to the mirror and leans into it as she begins to panic.

Samantha: OMG! I don't have a reflection! I don't have a reflection!

Panel one: Samantha waves her hands in front of the mirror as it shows no reflection.

Samantha: Did I die in my sleep?? Am I ghost??

Samantha: Okay, I felt that so maybe I'm not a ghost...unless ghosts can feel when a ghost pinches itself!

Panel three: Samantha turns to her bed.

Samantha: Okay, no body in bed so I still am in it. But that means...

Panel four: Samantha begins to feel at her teeth to see if she has fangs.

Samantha: I'm a vampire! I'm a bloodsucker! A creature of the night! I'm going to have to trade my nice soft bed for a cramp coffin!

Panel five: Samantha turns her head as she hears laughter.

Sampson: I snuck in and switched your dresser mirror with a trick mirror!

Panel three: Sampson points ahead as he continues to laugh.

Panel four: Sampson runs out into the hall as he ducks down and avoids a thrown pillow. Sampson is still chuckling to himself.

Sampson: Hey, April Fools Day, anything goes, and everyone is a target, pumpkin.

Panel five: A close up on Sampson as he has an evil smirk across his face as he claps his hands together in anticipation for his next gags.

Panel one: Bingo is in his backyard as he looks towards the Smythe house and the fence that separates the two properties. Sampson is waving him over and motioning for him to jump over the fence. Sampson has the most igneous smile on his face.  Rebel tilts his head as he is suspicious of Sampson.

Sampson behind the fence: Bingo! Samantha wants to see you! Hustle on over! No time to waste!

Bingo: Sure! I'll be right over!

Panel two: Bingo begins to leap over the fence as he is optimistic of what he is going to see. Rebel looks on as he shakes his head.

Rebel: Never trust a silver platter...especially when you the person offering it to you is a creep. (Sigh) My boy always has to learn these things the hard way.

Panel three: Bingo lands in a giant hole filled with muddy water as Sampson looks on with a smile as he holds a water pot. Nearby is a hose with small drops of water dripping from the nozzle. Nearby is a shovel with a small pile of dirt near it.

SFX: SPLASH

Bingo: Wha--?!

Panel four: Sampson begins to pour water on Bingo as Bingo frowns as he turns to the reader.

Sampson: Don't worry, little sap, with plenty of water, Greenthumb Sampson will help you grow into something presentable--like a shrub or an average weed!!

Panel five: Sampson begins to walk away as Bingo looks on with an angry glare. Samantha runs past Sampson and sticks her tongue at him as Sampson ignores her and continues to boast.

Panel one: Bingo steps out of the hole of water as he kicks the water out of his muddy shoes and pushes his wet hair back.

Samantha: I'm sorry, Bingo. Daddy is just horrible on April 1^st.

Bingo: The rest of the year isn't much better.

Panel two: Samantha folds her arms as she talks about what Sampson did to her as Bingo listens.

Samantha: He just goes overboard. Ruining your jeans and shoes and making me think I'm a ghost.

Panel three: Bingo chuckles as Samantha goes wide eyed.

Bingo: Heh heh. Really? A ghost?

Samantha: !!!

Panel four: Samantha points at Bingo's wet jeans as he smiles and holds his hands out front as he tries to calm her down.

Samantha: I wouldn't laugh, raindrop!

Bingo: Okay okay! Let's not fight! We're on the same team!

Panel one: Willie Wilkin is beginning to put mail in his mail box as he begins to push down the lid.

Willie Wilkin: Hm. Quiet day.

Willie Wilkin: Sampson must be out of town.

Panel two: Willie is scared off his feet as a small jack in the box with a sign reading "April Fools, Wilkins" springs at his head.

Willie Wilkin: YAAAA

Panel three: Willie Wilkin is on the ground and shaking both fists in the air. The jack in the box dangles half way down the mail box pole.

Willie Wilkin: WILKIN!! NO 'S'!!

Panel four: Uncle Herman with a baseball glued to his hand that he can't pull free walks over to Willie as Willie begins to pick himself up as he looks at the jack in the box with disdain.

Uncle Herman: Got you too, eh, Willie boy?

Willie: That pea brained knuckle dragger and his juvenile antics...

Willie: You'll never see me stoop to his level! Never! Tricks and jokes are for children only!

Panel five: Bingo and Samantha are running over to Willie and Uncle Herman.

Bingo: Dad! We want to play a joke on Sammie's dad, but for it to work; we need you to ask your friend at the radio station to...

Panel six: Willie Wilkin stands up and points a finger to the sky as he declares his full support as Bingo and Samantha look on with a smile. Uncle Herman playfully rolls his eyes at Willie's hypocrisy as he tries to get the glued baseball off his hand.

Willie: Anything you need!

Uncle Herman thinking: As the eldest, I should be the voice of reason...

Sampson: What a belly buster! I'd make all months April and only one day in them if I could!

Panel two: Sampson is listening to the radio.

Radio: This is Rex Radbag and looks like a police report is coming in for a local business that left the doors unlocked and invited thieves to come on in and take all the goodies!

Panel three: Sampson waves off the radio as he sticks out his chest.

Sampson: Hah! Anyone too stupid to not lock up at night deserves to lose everything he owns!

Panel four: Sampson's eyes go wide as he looks like he's seeing his life pass before his yes.

Radio: The Smythe Gym is missing a few dumbbells and dead lifting their insurance policy today, my pals and gals!

Panel five: Sampson begins to speed across the road, leaving scorch marks like Back to the Future when the DeLorean traveled in time. On the sidewalk several people look on as Sampson speeds off. An old lady leaps across the street to avoid being hit by Sampson as a confused boy scout looks on.

Panel two: Sampson stops on his heel as he is surprised to see Bingo, Samantha, Willie, and Uncle Herman inside as they all smile and wave at him. Uncle Herman is tossing the baseball in his hand. Samantha has a pair of keys in her hand that she is shaking to show that she unlocked the doors to the gym. Inside of the gym are various weights, dumbbells, work out mats, and treadmills.

Bingo, Samantha, Willie, Uncle Herman: APRIL FOOLS!!

Panel three: A sore Sampson turns away and waves them off as he begins to storm out of the gym. In the background Bingo, Samantha, Willie and Uncle Herman are laughing at Sampson and his attitude as they congratulate each other.

Sampson: Bah! Anyone who wastes their time on stupid April Fools tricks needs their ears boxed for 'em!

Samantha: Me thinks daddy is a bit of a bad sport.

Bingo: Yeah, like playing baseball with a spit ball and a wet noodle.

Battle of the old school America's Girls. Who is better and why?

 Hey, the board is still here! We haven't lost an entire two days worth of posts and forums! We're on our way up. And yeah, I save most of my old reviews so if anyone wants I can repost them. But before that...



Back to Dixon College as our favorite vampires must deal with parents, ex boyfriends...and how hard it is to put make-up on without a reflection. And what danger soon approaches? TUNE IN!


The Good

The writing: Well, this is a sitcomic and we've certainly got that right as we've got: Jess and Stewart visiting Jess's parents, an old boyfriend, and Jess caught sucking blood from Stewart in a rather interpretive setting. Kelly needs a vampire mirror and has dragged Vera into that plot, big dumb jock likes girl with attitude. So yeah. Sitcom worthy.

The humor is still great. I like Kelly running around looking like a hobo clown as she freaks out about it. Jess is the queen of one-liners. "This chili dog has no peckers" made me actually laugh out loud. Vera and Stewart faking as a couple and the reactions from the dumber members of RHO Sorority house is funny. So again, good stuff from Henry Darin and new co writer Robin Taylor. And who is Robin Taylor?...wait, The Penguin? I think Google Search might have failed me...

Art: Again it's another solid effort from fictional person Jeff Shultz. The facial reactions are great. Everything is clean, crisp and looks nice. Every character has their own stand out feature. Even Jess's mom with her long pointy noise. The builds and physics help with the new characters as we have the fat Mr. Seaver and the muscle for brains Trevor being introduced.

Modern day vampire problems: I like Kelly's plot with her not being able to apply make-up because...she's a vampire and has no reflection. So she ends up looking like a hobo clown and it only gets worse when Vera helps her out. Again it's a new little take on being a vampire in today's world and a character having to adjust and laughing at the results. Plus the vampire lens. Seriously, in the cartoons and movies where the character wears sun block, fine, I get that—but there eyes would still melt, so kudos for this idea.


Mr. Seaver: Hey, we got an actual antagonist. And he's a sad sack: lost his fiancée to a vampire named Luigi (the better Mario Brother), bad breath, lives with his mom, and the government refuses to fund his million dollar vampire vacuum. So yeah, the way the universe beats up on this poor guy is extremely funny. And I always like a villain who has a valid reason for what he is doing.


Jess's family and pre-college life: I just like their reaction to Stewart. If there's one thing this book does really well is make sure you understand that Stewart is a loser. A likeable loser, but still a loser you're not ashamed to laugh at. Anyway the mom and dad are really witty so yeah, I can see where Jess gets it from. And it looks like an ex-boyfriend will be in the mix. So we're about to have the weirdest, distorted triangle ever since I left my protractor at home during a trig exam.

Sit-Commercials: We get two new ones with Quit Zit and Lab Mice. Quit Zit is my favorite with Flawfinder and especially the ending. Lab Mice is a soap opera about mice adjusting to life as nonspecimens. And while on the subject of soap operas...am I the only one who has a relative constantly call me to talk about them like I actually watch them? Is it just me.

Glen Whitmore: Again the guy is just great.


The Bad

Trevor. Yep, we've got the token meathead roommate who is into workouts and is super dumb. It's just like yesterday when I was watching Weird Science on the USA network...wishing Duckman would come on. I've just seen this type of guy over and over and so far he hasn't done anything to break from the mold. I mean, his letter was funny, but overall, well, this is .1 so there's time to sway my opinion of him until then I'm going to put him here.

Where's the wrapper: There was no candy wrapper on the bed! That was extremely vital to the entire story! Jeff Shultz you have failed us!

Repeat sit-commercial. The Sleep With Me was from last issue.

That stupid hat Adam is wearing: He isn't even in the story save for the front page intro and I already know I'm not going to like him because of that stupid hat. Look like a hobbit with that stupid hat.









What I learned:

Vampires have contact lens for daytime.

   
• Bookshelves are involved in 6 out of 10 house hold fatalities.
• Don't let your girl around a vampire named Luigi.
• Stewart's family lived in a Winnebago.
• Nobody appreciates a good evil laugh.
• Make-up is much more complicated than I thought.
• Never let Mimi from the Drew Cary Show do your make-up
• Big Toe photos are romantic
• The government is not dealing with the vampire crisis like it should! Where is our wall??!
• Me and the Flawfinder have the exact same taste it clothes it's almost like—hey!!

Anyway, this was a good issue. I enjoy all the plot threads the characters are in...except Trevor. He just doesn't seem that interesting to me because right now I've seen this character over and over and could cut and paste them. But it's his first appearance so maybe he can become interesting. And really that—AND THE CANDY WRAPPER!!!—are my only complaints. And I'm really interesting to see the trainwreck when all the plot lines are pulled together in a wonderful, tangled mess. I give this issue a B+.  This issue is setting things up nicely for the next issues which I'll review SAME TIME, SAME BAT CHANNEL.


And for anyone who wants me to stop ending my Super Sucker reviews with that line...no.

Brought to us by Sitcomics...

Wait. Sitcomics? Sit Comics? Yeah, I guess most people sit and read comics, but I read comics standing up like a man!  Eh, maybe there's more to the name, but highly unlikely.

Brought to us by Darin Henry behind shows such as Seinfield, KC Undercover, and Futurama. Actually, just one episode of Futurama wrote—but it was the one with popples and I always like to call people Wingus and Dingus so this is clearly his greatest accomplishment.

We also have Jeff Shultz who may or may not be real, as has been debated on these forums. Me? I think he's a time displaced robot with a glass hand, which circuits contain the digitally encoded human survivors and is waiting for the day to release them. Until then, he's doing comic art to buy some time. Or he's a vampire.

Speaking of vampires in a very transparent transition...


Jess and Kelly just met and they have two things in common: the same ex boyfriend and they are now vampires. With a wild roommate, a handsome vampire hunter, and a guy who lets them drink blood for money, college should still be a breeze, right?

The Good

The writing: Well, if this was supposed to feel like a TV show it did the job. You had two acts and two commercial breaks (more on those later). But more importantly, it did what a first epis—er, issue should do: introduce the characters, the plot, and what the series will be about. And it's a fun premise; two college girls suddenly become vampires and have to rely on sucking the blood of a loser to make sure they don't kill anyone they are infatuated with. It's a new little twist on the vampire lore and in a fun setting that is open.

Both girls are likeable. Kelly is flighty, friendly, outgoing, and popular. Jess is more of a loner, sarcastic, outsider. And I like how they actually do develop a friendship. Stuart actually gets some decent character development going from a hustler, a jerk, to someone who actually cares about his new friends. Still a loser and a coward, but a noble one. Vera...she's a force of nature that does not abide by our norms or laws and it is amazing.

The humor is great. Just filled with a number of one liners. I really liked the three sorority girls and the one, Paisley and her dry wit is great. "It's also rectangular." You also have a lot of other jokes such as "dorsal vein" so the jokes range for everyone. I can't think of one joke I didn't like.

The art. Jeff Shultz is his always solid self. He sticks with his Dan DeCarlo Archie style and it works really well. Heck, for Vera it helps her really stand out because—someone who is not gorgeous drawn in that style? She also has my favorite freak out facial expression that made me laugh. This is some of his best work. One problem I always had with his art was the background. He could get lazy at times. But not this time as we have people walking about, talking with friends, reacting to various things so it gives me even more of a reason to go back and read.

New vampire twist: Fitting for the scenario, blood lust is connected with love lust. Meaning without blood for someone repulsive, they'll try to drink the blood of whomever they are infatuated with. That's a nice new twist. You also have the drinking the blood of someone like Stuart who acts like a cold shower. And he is a loser as he apparently uses the money for comics. And I kind of figured sunblock would be used, but I'm glad Henry thought of the eyes and needing sunglasses to go out in the sun.

The price: 3.99 for 64 pages. I likey.

Sit-Commercials: Wait...SITCOMics...sitCOMICs. Ohhhhh. I get it...me smart.
Anyway, to help with the illusion of this being like a sitcom, we get commercials ranging from deodorant to stop morons to super awesome serial to magic insurance. All are done in various styles and they all are really good. My favorite is Nina Ninja. All the art is different and varies for those who like a bit of everything.

Little interview: Well, it's more of a talk show introduction (fun take on a letter page). And it's pretty fun and informative. We even get music list of songs the writer and artist listened to while working on the issue. What, no Skillet?! And yes, colorists do rule the world. Speaking off...

Glen Whitmore: For the main story he does his usual solid job. The colors are all nice and everything flows, but its with the sit-commercials where he shines. You have the solid colors for the American toon based Mating Season Animal dating to the more traditional, elegant of Shhh! For the different style of art, the different brands of commercial he adapts flawlessly to it.  He's so great and sells more books than anyone else on the staff, he gets his name in the good section. Because I respect greatness.

The lettering. Marshall Dillon does a fine. When Jess is sick Kelly is disgusted with Stuart the word balloon drips appropriately to capture the tone better. Cheers of joy and confusion are big, bold words. I also love the log with the dripping blood. Nice touch.


Richard: He's supposed to be British but I never go that. Probably needed an accent. I mean, he's probably going to be here and gone character, but it would have been nice to help distinguish him a bit. Give him a bit of a stiff upper lip, what for cheerios, shagadelic baby, yeah!

Questioning my Eastern Europe knowledge. I minored in Eastern European culture for six years!  I do not need a caption box to tell me how to pronounce a fairly common place dialect, thank you very much!

My dog: I finish one segment, dog goes to door and makes me walk her around the yard for a few minutes over and over and over! My left pinky finger is numb and fee hurt! Seriously, she's 16 years old. How in the world is she running? She should be a motionless mass! How can I maintain the quality of reviews that two people read with all of these interruptions!?!

The art. This isn't for me, but you know that some people will see the style and be turned off. And I guess you could point out...eh, why not say it? What's Jeff Shultz going to do? Walk up to me and punch me in the nose? Jess and Kelly look like Midge and Kelly.



What I learned:

Vampires make bad boyfriends.

   
• Blood loss leads to bladder control loss
• 1 out of every 3 sorority girls are dumb-dumbs
• Jess is—was a vegetarian
• Vampires can get drunk.
• Vera is here and we just have to grin and bear it or close our eyes and vomit.
• Shhh! Would have helped me with a few dates.
• RHO RHO RHO is the best sorority house!
• Nina Ninja should get her own comic series.
• If you say Jess and Kelly look like Midge and Melody, Jeff Schulz will walk up to you and punch you with his glass hand...ow...

Yeah, this is a great book. It's just an extremely well done book on every level. My only real compliant is Richard wasn't British enough...and honestly, do we really need the British at the point? I give Super Suckers 1 an A.

PTF Reviews DIE KITTY DIE

Well, I'm back. Can't say I had a lot of fun with the last series, but when you want to gouge your eyes out with an ice cream scoop, you can only go up. So let's delve into a book you all have probably already read and commented on...because I am that guy who is always late to the party!!

Kitty Ravencraft is a comic book icon on the decline. Sales are down and not even the most ludicrous of publicity have garnered lasting acclaim. Leaving only one option: KILL KITTY. How do you kill a witch? Let's find out!


The art: Ohhthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou! I think...finally the horrible nightmares of heads with shifting noses, chins, and skeletal structure might just end! We have Dan Parent and Fernando Ruiz, so I went in thinking the art would be great, and it was wonderful. Dan Parent does a great job with the opening and Kitty Comics/Evil Corp. Ruiz did an amazing job at the comic shop and Kitty's manor. I keep going back and finding new things to admire.

The writing: It's a first issue and it does what a first issue is supposed to do: introduce the characters, start the story and point to where it will be going in future issues. And if you're a fan of...jokes relating to a female's frame, then you'll be happy. I like that all the characters have their own dialogue and way of speaking. Rudy is a pervert, Ace is a moron and totally tubular dude, Skip is skuzzy and angry. The characters have their own personalities and it's a joy to read.

The pacing is really well. I really like the set up for the villains: Skip is the boss, Ace is an idiot, and Monica seems to have common sense to her. So it's a pretty good dynamic. The supporting cast is fun. Most of all Kitty is a well rounded person. She's fun, she's friendly, she has worries (no longer being famous, being forgotten, and mansions ain't cheap) and is a character I'm going to root for to survive whatever comes her way. Seriously, if this ends like Drag Me To Hell, I'll be depressed for weeks.


The lettering. Janice Chiang did a really wonderful job. Especially on the first pages with the old school effects. I liked the emphasis on the EWW when Rudy the frog wanted a kiss from Kitty and skip deciding to KILL Kitty. Dippy the Dead Kid getting his own special word balloons. And the ending with DIE, KITTY! DIE!

The coloring. Glen Whitmore did an amazing job with this issue. I give him major props for the opening pages. I actually pulled out my first issue of Mighty Mutaninals #1 to really respect how great a job he did with the coloring to capture the old time comic feel. He could not have done that any better. And he's got two different artists with different styles and he does not miss a beat. And he looks like he'll be the colorist for Super Suckers so that comic is already on good footing with me.

The inside references and quips: There done where you don't have to be in the know and can just use common sense to realize how stupid these ideas are...and yet real comic companies do them (Sigh). Oh, and for future issues, if the jabs, quips, pokes at DC Comics continue and increase, I'll be more than willing to give an automatic B. Just throwing that out there...

The homages to Harvey Comics: I used to have a huge ton of Harvey comics: Casper, Hot Stuff, Little Dot, Spooky (my favorite) so I really appreciate the trip down memory lane.

Extras: We have few gag pages for the old timey junk you'd mail off for and then be vastly disappointed when it did not live up to the hype. And awesome pin ups from Mike Rooth and Gisele Lagace along with Dan Parent and Fernando Ruiz. Also plugs to their websites and other online comics. And I love the homage to old ads in comics that looked amazing...until you realize they didn't work at all.




The Bad


Misspellings and grammar: We got two pretty bad ones early on with "torpedos" and "missles" both on the same page. Also you had "...wasn't 'a' very clear." I consider these pretty big no-no's with comics. I learned to read mainly from comics and read comics aloud to myself to improve my speech, so this really bothers me. Although it is nice knowing there is a worse spellcheck than mine. Like now how spellcheck is saying spellcheck is—I can grammatically use it as one word or two or with a hyphen you stupid piece of!!!—er, um, yeah, moving on.

Who's that guy? The first issue did a great job introducing us to the protagonist, the antagonists, supporting cast, future friends/allies...but who was the fat guy with the blond hair and five 'o'clock shade? I'm assuming he's a reoccurring supporting cast member. I'll just call him Kevin Smith until I have conformation.



Things I've learned.


That Rudy and my cousin both do things with Barbie dolls that worry me.

• Dippy The Dead Kid is much more Spooky than he is Casper.
• Zombies make everything better.
• Hello Kitty Comics might not have been for younger children.

• Ending comic with an "X" makes it cooler.
• Killing a living being is much better than investing in better ideas and smarter marketing.
• Skip prefers the Rob Liefield method for achieving financial success in the comic book industry.
• I can buy a nuclear missile AND lazer-x-specs for less than ten dollars! Wowie!
• Breasts jokes are the best jokes.

 

Yeah, this was an amazing issue, the art is great, the writing is very good, the lettering, the coloring, and the extra art is nice. But there is a major problem with the spelling and grammar that I can't overlook, so instead of an A+, I've got to give it a B+. But I'm hoping that won't be a problem for the rest of the series. I highly recommend this book. And so far it's the best book I've read this month.
