  • DeCarlo Rules: Definitely. I was a little worried when there was no B&V Friends solicitation for November... that means only 5 issues came out this year, instead of 6 -- but since you got a renewal notice, and there's an issue solicited for December, it looks like it will continue!  :)

Both subscriptions are automatically switched to the new ARCHIE AND ME digest, unless a subscriber requests a different digest title. No word on B&V FRIENDS digest so far; here's hoping "no news is good news" in this case.

Given that Archie is considered a joke by so many in the comic industry, I doubt we'll ever see the "critical anthology" you're wishing for.

I'm now scared to reread Twelve Cent Archie because it sounds like I might have the same issues with it you do.

I might just remain "bedazzled by the fact that anyone had taken the time to write a book about Archie that doesn't amount to a company-approved summary of the publisher's history."

This is also on Hottopic.com and every size is sold out except for Extra Large

Some nice Dan Parent head shots there. Maybe it's me, but doesn't it seem a little weird that the shirt design allows space for a dozen character head shots, but it's the same six characters, repeated twice? ... Rather than, as would seem to make a lot more sense to me, including Moose, Midge, Chuck, Nancy, Cheryl, and Dilton? I suppose they could have made the main cast's heads a little larger, and the supporting cast's heads a little smaller (and mixed up the pattern) to make the main characters faces stand out a little more.
I was thinking along the same lines except instead of Nancy, Chuck, and Cheryl, using Weatherbee, Grundy, and Pop Tate (or Mr. Lodge).  Then I sort of realized the Hot Topic demographic probably doesn't want to walk around with images of old folks on their shirts.   :(

General Discussion / Re: North American comics sales 2011-2016
« on: September 10, 2017, 12:55:49 PM »
It's interesting to see these figures, and I also wonder where the figures came from and exactly who was reporting their sales that would combine into the totals presented.  We know the monthly Diamond figures only reflect orders for a given period, so of course that's always been somewhat incomplete.

I'm not sure what my takeaway of all this is, but the snapshot appears to show digital sales have levelled (or declined) despite the increase in ownership of devices people could use to access digital content during the 2011-16 years.  I also suspect the increase in overall dollars by 2016 is more a reflection of higher per unit price than any sort of bump in readership.

Makes good food for thought regardless.

All About Archie / Re: Betty & Veronica - Lucey vs. DeCarlo
« on: September 09, 2017, 11:33:57 PM »
They say, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."
I find DeCarlo's B&V more visually appealing overall. Even when the girl's facial expressions are mad or angry, they still look cute to me. When Lucey draws B&V angry--they're not so cute. Just my opinion.
I do think that Lucey's Archie seems to display a wider range of expressions than Archie's DeCarlo's, and he's good at capturing the physical slapstick-type situations.

In the bottom panel, this is NOT Betty. I remember this story....

I have that book and i love that book, but even I, as a HUGE Lucey fan, was a bit taken back at his use of "by far".  I think he was just trying to be edgy since Dan DeCarlo is assumed by most casual observers to be THE Archie artist.

For B&V, in that era I'll take DeCarlo.  If I can go across all eras, I'll take Dan Parent or Bob Montana, although I love Jeff Shultz's DeCarlo tribute style as well.

I like Dan Parent's B&V, but Montana and DeCarlo drew during what in my opinion was a high point for women's fashion, so I guess I like Parent's Betty and Veronica heads and Montana and DeCarlo from the neck down.  Ha ha.

Yes, thanks, DeCarlo, for putting this together! :)
It looks like the only book I need is Archie's Big Book of Mischief..., since I don't do digital.
I already have all the Josie comic books, but its nice to have the reprints so I don't have to handle the originals since they are so old and valuable.

Thanks for posting all this info, DeCarlo.  :)

I was bummed-out about not being able to get the new collection, but it looks like most of those stories are reprints from other collections or stuff I have already so now I know I can hold off on it for awhile.  :P

I just got this in the mail.  I'm at work so I don't have time to read it yet but on first glance it looks really cool!

Dare we hope for a complete review (of the Archie-related contents) in the near future??  ???

I'm not really the reviewing type DCR, but YOU are.  I'm more of a consumer than a collector of comics.  How about this?  When I'm done (it will probably take me a few weeks as I'm reading about 30 things at once, LOL), I'll let you know, then you PM me your address and I'll send it to you and if you want to, you can review it for us to read.   If you don't want to, you still get to read the book.  You can't lose (and if you review it for the forum, we all win).

Thanks for the info! I thought she started out in other comics first--sorta like Sabrina started out in the pages of Archie's Mad House. Thanks for clearing that up.
Regarding the other Best of Josie you pictured. I had pre-ordered it on amazon when it first showed up, but as the date approached, they cancelled it. I don't think it exists either.  :(
Would you happen to know about Katy Keene? I would like to read some of her old stories. I know some were reprinted in the digests, but they seem to be sporadic.  Do you have, or do you know of a list of reprinted Katy stories like the one you are doing of Josie.

Sony actually still has the film rights for Spider-Man, but they are sharing them with Marvel as part of their deal, which is what allows Spider-Man to be in the Marvel cinematic universe.  The technicalities don't really mean much to the consumers/fans, but it is nice to see the two companies cooperating and the results - Spider-Man Homecoming and Spider-Mans appearance in Civil War - were pretty good.

Okay, maybe I misunderstood what was going on there. So are you saying Sony produced the Spider-Man: Homecoming film, or Marvel Studios/Disney? And in either case, how does the other company make money off it, or is it some kind of profit-sharing percentage deal on paper?

My understanding is that Sony put up the money for the film and paid Marvel Studios a fee to produce the movie.  Sony distributed the movie and kept the profits while Marvel Studios gets to use the Spider-Man character in Avengers, Captain America and other movies that are owned by Marvel.  Sony retains the rights which is why they are exploring movies for Venom, Black Cat and others.

Wow! You sure know your stuff.. and you're really good at expressing yourself and putting your thoughts down on paper. I mean that as a compliment. You must be a writer! It takes me forever to find the rights words I want to say sometimes.
