All About Archie / Re: I'm here.
June 04, 2020, 05:18:59 PM
I just looked for a way to sign in but couldn't. In hospital, cheap phone, low-end glasses & aging eye :'( :'(. When I eventually can, I will write about two new - to me - Archie digests I bought - at a K-Mart!!!!!!!!!!!  :D In White Plains, NY, where I am now. The lead story in one, anyway 8).

...The Marvel digest Archie put out included modern comic art of a certain sort, as about 1\3 of each issue, the back of the book, was filled up with Adventures " acceptable for kid's " stories of that issue's character, from this-century Marvel Adventures titles.

...I always found it kind of odd that digest titles tended to work out as being more or less exclusively for kid's titles...When Marvel made that late 80s attempt at digests Star titles and 80s toy tie-ins (G.I. Joe, Transformers) were IIRC all that there was - except for the umpteenth re-reprinting of Lee/Ditko Spider-Man stories, classic but maybe a little old hat.even as Reagan trailed off into GHWB.

...I miss-posted, meaning " ACP " to be the last word in my post above. Marvel, BTW, issued Dennis The Menace digests when they briefly picked the franchise up during Jim Shooter's regime. The " all the way up..., comment opens up a topic that I'll comment about above...

All About Archie / I'm here.

I haven't been able to sign in for a long long while on my phone, I just can't figure out how to do it. I have moved, too, to Portland, OR -  and, I've been having extreme problems regarding my health and things stolen from me :-[ and I haven't been able to go to a comics shop since before I came here :( - I am pretty handicapped , too :o. The only comics pubs I've acquired recently have been three books I ordered from Walmart,Com - Spider-Man " Life Story " tpb, a 2010s " Pearls Before Swine " book, and this big-sized hardcover of : Little Lulu " from Drawn & Quarterly.
I am, rare for me, on a desktops now, so I can sign in. BTW, I still think you should bring back the link to the daly strip ~ Yeah, I know it's reprints ~ Come ON!!!!!!!!!!! :2funny:

...Those  certainly proved successful :D ~ and, I believe I bought all 3 of these NEW, OFF THE NEWSSTAND (and JUGHEAD WITH ARCHIE, etc. #1 too!!!!!!! ;D) - but they were NOT the first big-company digest comics!!!!!!!!! Both Gold Key/Western/Whitman and Fawcett enjoyed several years of success with the DISNEY COMICS DIGEST and GOLDEN COMICS DIGEST and DENNIS THE MENACE POCKET FULL OF FUN titles respectively, starting about the very late Sixties. DC even dabbled with them prior to DC!

All About Archie / " SUGAR SUGAR " 50th Anniversary
August 06, 2019, 08:36:12 PM
Earlier to-day I l\watched on YouTube a (basically) complete August 1969 episode of Dick Clark's " AMERICAN BANDSTAND " TV series ~ which, in showing its Top Ten...had " Sugar Sugar " at #1 ;D :D !!!!!!!!! And played it IN FULL! :smitten:
I was going to link to it but I can't find it now (fap) ~ The few minutes of the Top Ten and " S., S. " was up as a separate , short, post, but I didn't want to bother with that.

General Comics / Re: MAD magazine discontinuation

...Well, some Dave Berg's were kind of topical ~ " Hippie "/long hair-era strips had jokes relating to that era and I remember an earlier-Sixties strip where a typical Berg adult asks a bunch of the teenagers what the distinction is between " going steady ", " going steadily " (which I had never heard of) and others.

Quote from: DeCarlo Rules on June 29, 2019, 07:59:15 PMThe stories reprinted in BETTY & VERONICA SPECTACULAR VOL. 2 TP span the contents of issues #12 through #25 (originally published January 1995 through September 1997). 13th Dimension posted the contents pages, as well as a few sample story pages from the trade collection, due out next week (July 3rd, 2019) -- just in time for celebrating the 4th of July!

...I recall the non-comics material in that title being fairly large;print advice for young/pre-teens stuff (make-up, ,puzzles, boyfriends.etc./ with illos of B&V for a graphic treat.
Is this book just the comics stories? I can't read the ToC.

...Well, yeah - but do you think they'll reprint spoofs of Eisenhower's foreign policy, or low-priced Life magazine subscription offers?
I think it would tend to be reprints of the star cartoonists - Martin, Sergio, etc. - and vintage moivie-TV spoofs of shows that are recognized by today's younger audience/have reboots-remakes coming up - frequently if not always colorized - like these newsstand market-only giant reprint issues of Mad Looks At Star Wars, Super-Heroes, etc. that they:be been issuing over the last few years.

Are the standard comic-book format comic books of Betty & Veronica (which comic-book print new stories by Parent that also appear ~ seperately?? ~ in the digests) still coming out?
When I moved recently, I asked my new LCS to make that franchise something in my box ~ by I have seen none since then, and I thought that...

General Comics / MAD magazine discontinuation
July 12, 2019, 07:10:35 PM
In case it's escaped someone here ~ MAD magazine has announced its , essentially, discontinuation after 67 years :'( . To be absolutely precise, briefly, the magazine will switch over entirely to reprints inside and greatly curtail its distribution ~ Comicbook.com has the full story ~ This is almost certainly a by-stages pulling of the plug ~ Though DC is claiming now that new annuals will continue. Anyway, seems to me like a would-be corporate " keep the trademark alive " strategem.
An era has ended :-X !!!!!!!!!!!

...Well, I think of " girly " as like Bettie Page. old-school pin-ups ma...girly shows ". " Girlie ", contrastly, makes me think more of " girl-LIKE/more aimed at ' girls ".
