Archie comics has gained a renaissance after going through low sales throughout the 80's,90s and 2000s all thanks to the  the leadership of current CEO  Jon Goldwater.

Archie Comics' average monthly sales are still lower than they were in the '80s, '90s, and from 2000-2009.
So if you want to spin those statistics under the heading of "renaissance", then yeah whatever, I guess.

ALL comic sales are much lower than the past decades.
For instance, there was a time when Marvel comics selling 150,000 issues in a month would be cancelled.  Now, that would be the #1 or #2 selling title across all companies.

So you can't really compare numbers to those time periods, you'd have to look at how they did vs all the other companies - where did they rank in sales for the month, and if those relative numbers improved.

Betty is a Blossom. Wow. I did not see that coming. That makes Betty and Cheryl third cousins, I believe. Same for Polly and Jason. Nowhere near scandalous. And, hey, last week, Cheryl was shown to have an interest in a Cooper lady, so...hint, hint.

Yes, they specified that they are third cousins, who can legally marry.  That means your grandparents were first cousins, so you'd share one set of great grandparents.
You have four sets of great grandparents, so just that one branch is shared.
The average person in our society would probably still avoid that kind of relationship if they knew about it beforehand.. but there are no genetic problems like there could be with siblings or first cousins.

I said that wrong.  If your grandparents are first cousins, your great grandparents are brother and sister, so you'd share great-great grandparents.

I believe, in this case, the great-grandparents were both male. Was it specified they were brothers?

If so, let's assume they were identical twin brothers. They each got married and had a son. The sons would each have around 50% of their DNA in common with each other. Then they each had a son (Clifford and Hal). Clifford and Hal each have around 25% of their DNA in common with each other. Then they had children. Cheryl and Betty (and Polly and Jason) each have around 12.5% of their DNA in common with each other.

Yes, not sure why I said brother and sister.  They were brothers.

Something I hadn't though about earlier, but maybe ACP should have made a better effort to accept outside advertising in their comics.  Surely there's some clever sales/marketing people that could have gotten them ads from businesses that want to sell to the Archie readership demo.  I'm sure ACP generates sales and subs through the in-house ads, but I'd imagine far less than if they were instead promoting candy, toys, movies, tween accessories, etc.

This is true. I've been reading different ACP back issues from different years and making a mental observation of the types of paid advertising that was carried, and there's been a consistent steady reduction of that over the past couple of decades.

Other than the back covers of digests, the ONLY interior paid advertising now being carried in ACP's digests (which is where they'd have the most free space and the biggest circulation to attract advertisers) is for Diamond Comics Distribution. I don't count things like the CW's RIVERDALE and Rachael Antonoff's B&V fashion collection, because where else are they going to advertise, and who knows if it's not paid outright, but some kind of contract/reciprocal arrangement. For that matter, now that I think of it, maybe the DCD ads are some trading arrangement, too.

This is actually true for Marvel and DC too.  They used to have all kinds of ads in their comics, now it is just in-house ads.  I wonder if the low print numbers of modern comics make it not profitable for outside companies to buy ads in the comics.

On the digests, I've always seen those as the most available format, since those are still sold in grocery stores and places like Wal-Mart.  I'm 44 and my town did not have a comics store, and not many comics racks either, so the only times I got actual comics were when we went out of town and I found Archie comics in a rack at a Mini Mart.  You don't even find those racks in convenience stores much anymore, so you'd have to go to an actual comics shop to find them.  That limits their reach even more.  Doing something with the digests would be the way to keep going.

So how were the ratings? Are they still going down?

They've been pretty steady, and went up slightly this week.  Still in the middle for a CW show.

Thursday final rating:  .4 in 18-49, so down .1, which usually happens after a premeire.  1.15 million viewers total.
Numbers that are borderline for CW renewal - they are right in the middle of the whole CW lineup.  See the cancel/renew post below.

Not sure that I would call it a "hit", but networks like to use that term for every show when it starts to get people to try it.

Great. Can't even start a thread related to the actual comics without having that damn TV show take it over like a cancer.
We should just take our comics chat to PM since almost no one reads the actual Archie Comics anymore.

Not sure how much any of you watch TV ratings, but normal CW ratings are way lower than the other networks.  A .5 in the 18-49 rating is borderline but could be renewable for them.  The same website linked on the original post tracks their own renew/cancel predictions based off a formula that's been fairly accurate. So those really interested can check their site each week (usually on Tuesday they update their renew/cancel posts).
Welcome To The Boards!   :)

South Dakota?   ???

;)

North Dakota.

We actually have a Riverdale, North Dakota, but it has only around 200 people, so it doesn't have its own high school.
Always thought it was neat when I was a kid, though, to see that town on the map.

I have to apologize, I put my response in the wrong thread.  I had wanted to put it in the other one talking about the low ratings.
