I recently purchased a large quantity of Archie digests at a local Half-Price Books.  Earlier this week, I was reading one from 1989.  I recall I started reading Archie Comics in 1988, at the age of 5.  The digest I was reading had an anti-drug advertisement.  I fondly remember seeing many of these as a child.  There was also a 2 part story that had a very strong anti-cigarette message.  
   This got me thinking.  I don't keep up with Archie Comics all that closely, but I do make some effort, and I don't recall seeing any anti-drug advertisements for many years.  When did they stop printing them?  Why did they stop?  Why haven't there been any anti-marijuana ads (or presumably stories) in the last several years?  

I think Bob White is probably my favorite Archie Comics artist. 

This is a great cartoon.  The animation is very well done.  However, I was very disappointed to discover that the DVD does not include closed captioning.  This is particularly difficult to understand b/c the cartoon must have been closed captioned when it first aired in 1999.  Why wouldn't these DVDs be closed captioned?

  Like I mentioned before, I think this show is being written by Republicans. 

Here is a key quote from that article: "and the show is on some level a deconstruction of the Archie myth that everything is safe, that everyone is good, that parents protect their children, that fundamentally the world is a good place — it felt like the ultimate subversion to that, the darkest, most taboo thing we could do, is a parent killing a child."
   I was thinking something similar as I saw the episode.  "Deconstructing the Archie myth" is certainly a poor premise for a show about Archie Comics, IMO.  The scenes of Clifford killing Jason and Clifford hanging himself are big stain on Archie Comics.

I would say it was a good episode overall.  The Party Game started by Cheryl and Chuck was very stupid though.  It didn't make sense, and Jughead would have bailed in any case.  Jughead did a good example of acting out someone on the autism spectrum, although it's not clear to me that Jughead has autism.  Him referring to his hat as stupid seemed wrong.  I agree with his comment about not hanging out with Veronica, but I think the comment about not wanting to hang out with Kevin was wrong.  Remember in the comics Jughead is the first character Kevin comes out too.  I'm sure they would have been friends.  Chuck as a "pyscho" character is wrong. 
[/size]    There is a lot of good acting here, particularly from the actors playing Jughead, Betty, and Veronica. 

Richie Cunningham often wore a varsity jacket on Happy Days.  However, I do not think Archie ever wore a varsity jacket in the 1950s, although they certainly existed at that time.  When was the first time Archie wore a varsity jacket.  I am thinking it is not until at least the 1970s, maybe even the 1980s.

I seem to recall reading in I believe it was the first Archie book of reboot comics that there would not be "teenage pregnancies" in Archie Comics.  Oh well, the writer did say Comics, didn't they?  That's certainly not a change for the better.  They so rarely are.  The show is much too serious. 
    I totally don't understand the Hermione/Fred relationship in this show.  Hermione's husband just got sent to prison for embezzling a very large sum of money.  That would certainly constitute valid grounds for divorce for just about anybody.  She clearly wants to date another guy (Fred Andrews), so why doesn't she just divorce Hiram Lodge?  I don't get it.

I don't know when the scenes in the photos are imagined to be taking place, but I can assure you it's not the 1940s. The answer to whether the photos are accurate to the fashion of pre-1957 or 1957-onwards would be dependent on a single key visual clue in the photos -- Jughead's sneakers, which are Converse All-Stars. If he's wearing low-cut Oxford style Converse All-Stars, that would place the photos as from 1957 or later, because 1957 was the first year in which Converse manufactured the low-cut version of those sneakers. Prior to that all Converse All-Stars were hi-tops. I honestly can't tell from the photos, as it seems like Jughead's pants are obscuring a view of where the shoes are cut at the ankle.

  I'm a big fan of Converse All Stars and have been wearing them for many years.  Jughead is clearly not wearing Converse All Stars ("Chucks") in that photograph.  You can tell by the design on the toe cap and also the back heel area.  Those are PF Flyers.  Also, I doubt very much that Jughead wore sneakers in any 1950s Archie Comic (unless he was in gym class or actually engaged in a sport of some kind).

I don't like the casting either, Reggie should have a sharp edge to his looks and this guy is like a junior Brendan Fraser or something, he has all the menace of a giant panda. Here's a story where Reggie isn't nice to Betty like he usually is but I thought it was funny and it's a story I would be okay with my favorite couples in so I hope no one minds. Besides it goes with the jerk Jughead story I posted in the Jughead Veronica thread.

  The writer of that story made a big mistake by giving a monetary amount.  People reading that story today (and in the future) will think Reggie is being extremely cheap when at the time it was written that wouldn't have been the case.

An entertaining comic character does not necessarily have to be crazy about Archie.

And being crazy about Archie is exactly what makes her not perfect. That's the very imperfection about her that makes her fans crazy, because she'd have to be crazy to put up with him.

Yes, I agree, that's what made her entertaining back in the day, and was fodder for so many great stories. However, the love triangle has already given us everything it could have. Every possible idea that can come from it has been hashed, rehashed, reused, recycled. It ceased to be funny a long time ago.

Archie is Betty's kryptonite. Without it, she, like Superman, would be perfect. However, you don't see Superman go looking for kryptonite to weaken him. If he did, you'd have to think that there was something seriously wrong with Superman.


But here's the thing you have to realize. The entire 75-year history of Archie Comics hinges on this one, impossible, monstrously irrational premise. Without Betty's obsession for Archie, she's perfect, finds a great guy who appreciates her, lives happily (and boringly, to the readers) ever after. Veronica, without Betty to compete with over Archie, loses all interest in him. What is there about Archie to possibly interest Veronica? NOTHING. She's not interested in him, she's interested in beating Betty, because Betty's the best, and obviously the only worthy challenger to Veronica. So without that triangle, no Archie Comics.

    The newspaper strips (which I generally don't particularly like) rarely dealt with the love triangle. 

  Overall, I disliked episode #7.  There are certainly problems in the series. There needs to be less focus on the adults. There is no doubt that this show failing is bad for Archie Comics though. 
   Clearly Alexandra Cabot is not interested in a serious discussion of the subject at hand.   I'm not even sure she has seen the show she is criticizing. 

  I thought it was much too serious.  The pregnancy bit is over the top.  Also, the adults were very involved and I think they should really be in the background.
